Localization of survey for the new Get Involved page.

Hi Jennie,

Could you please update the wiki page with the following information?
1) Target locales (i.e., languages you want the survey translated into)
2) Where the source text for the survey is being stored (on SVN, in a google doc, etc.?)
3) Available l10n resources (i.e., bilingual glossary of terms for this project, style guide, etc.)

Thank you!

Pascal, flod, any other questions?

Where is this survey going to be displayed?
Is there a stage/demo to test the localization in place before making it available to public?

The wiki page says it'll be on the mozilla.org/contribute site. Is that still the case, Jennie?

If that's the case, I'm not sure I follow the list of locales (we have that page in 30 locales).
And if the survey is not external (e.g. SurveyGizmo or similar), we'll need templates.
Hi all,

Sorry for the confusion.

1. Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Chinese
2. There is an English version here for testing: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1534951/Mozilla-New-Contributor-Survey
Source text is on this etherpad, https://openbadges.etherpad.mozilla.org/get-involved-process lines 36-203
3. All information on the survey is here: https://openbadges.etherpad.mozilla.org/get-involved-process
No L10N resources, as far as I know
4. Survey is hosted on SurveyGizmo
5. Yes, survey will be on contribute site.

I'm also pretty one of the bug is filed in the wrong component. You selected pt-PT, but you probably want pt-BR (that page is not localized in pt-PT).
Okay, how do I rectify that?
I moved the bug to pt-BR, but we're still missing a lot of information:

1. How are localizers supposed to provide the translated content? Where and in what format.
2. What's the precise deadline?
3. How do you plan to integrate that survey on mozilla.org/contribute? Have you talked with the team in charge of mozilla.org? It's not as trivial as it sounds

See wiki page for precise deadline (2014/03/01).

That deadline is this Saturday
#1 - Easiest method will be to provide the English version of the questions in a text document and have the localizers include the translated version below each question. Then, I can transfer everything into our survey tool. I'd suggest making language-specific etherpads to share with the localizers that include only the English survey text.

#2 - We will be using the data new contributors submit to contact them directly via email. For example, when I visit the Get Involved page, I can submit my email address and my interest area to Mozilla. We are working with the Business Intelligence team to automate this process (i.e. A survey request email will automatically be generated when a new contributor submits their information.) So, if I am understanding this question correctly, we won't need to be placing any type of messaging or intercept on a Mozilla site.
Here are a few more pieces of text to translate. Will add to wiki, sorry.

Thank you for taking our survey! Your response is very important to us.

Welcome to the Mozilla community! We'll be in touch soon about contribution opportunities, but in the meantime we would value your input. Your answers to this short survey will help us understand how we can best support new contributors like you. This survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Thank you!
I hope it's clear we can't get a translation for March, 1st.

We usually require 2 weeks to localize this kind of projects, and I still need to get the text in some format easy to manage. Before I start, can you confirm that it's ok to move the deadline to middle of March, ideally March 17 (2 week-ends)? Maybe we're able to get the translation before, but I'm not sure based also on the locales involved.

That's fine-- goal is as soon as possible.

Added .lang files in r125057.

Note that our tools remove duplicates, so it will be a little harder for you and easier on localizers. I'll update individual bugs in a moment.
Just to clarify: when ready, files will be available in this path, in a file called getinvolved_march2014.lang
http://svn.mozilla.org/projects/l10n-misc/trunk/surveys/

Example for es-ES
http://svn.mozilla.org/projects/l10n-misc/trunk/surveys/es-ES/getinvolved_march2014.lang
Jennie, will localizers have the change to check their work before the survey is published?
Hi all--

Here is the final survey. There are a couple of answers that we still need if folks could add them to a .lang file or to the bug that would be helpful. This is so great and thank you a lot!

1) Verify Language Defaults Correctly: Test link: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1534951/Mozilla-New-Contributor-Survey. This link should work for everyone and default to the language they have their browser set to. We need to verify that works.

2) Review Translations: I have a PDF of each language in case the browser default doesn't work. Please contact me if needed. You can also change language at the top of the page

3) Get Missing Text: See below.

Indonesian:
Add-ons
Documentation and writing

Portuguese:
Title
Intro text

Spanish:
Title
Intro text

Chinese:
Q: What type of Chinese is this? (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Simplified, etc.)
Title
Intro Text

> Indonesian:
> Add-ons
> Documentation and writing

I see both of them in the lang file ("Dokumentasi dan penulisan", "Pengaya").

> Title
> Intro text

Argh, I missed those :-\

> Chinese:
> Q: What type of Chinese is this? (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Simplified, etc.)

Bug was filed in zh-CN, so it's Chinese Simplified (Chinese Traditional,Taiwan would be zh-TW).
About the intro text: note that I split it in 3 sentences and left the link outside.

As a general rule, when using links to mozilla.org you want to drop the /en-US part: users will be automatically redirected to their locale, or fall back to en-US if the page is not translated.
Not useful for this specific page (it's not localized), but it could be for other projects.
In test URL, there is this string "(Optional) This question is important to the survey. If you meant to leave it blank, just continue. Otherwise please answer it." showed up when I didn't fill one of the question. It's not on lang file.
Jennie, please make sure you grab the strings only after localizers closed the bug. Apparently you get the Indonesian ones before the final review.
Okay, thanks!

Have people been able to test the default language change? Does SurveyGizmo localize to their default?
I believe it changes based on the browser locale.
I just wanted to make sure it was working-- if it's working for you, then I'll trust it and move ahead.
You can actually test it yourself: in Firefox Preferences->Content, Languages, add Spanish/Spain (es-ES) as first language and visit the link. Alternatively you can change the language at the top of the page for checking.
Hi Jennie, news about this?
Hi Francesco-- It's been a bit of a challenge to get it out due to email issues and last week's difficulties, but it will be sent out in the next week or so.
Thank you again for all your work on this. It will not have been for nothing, I promise!
Hi Francesco and all localizers,

Thank you so much for all your work on this. The process of getting this survey out unfortunately broke down, and we have to put a hold on it for the foreseeable future.
I am so sorry about this and appreciate all that you do for the community.

I am happy to answer any questions and I hope that we can continue working together to create robust communities of change.
Marking as wontfix.
