1136419 - Breakdown — Define Fira Sans & Charis SIL Shipping Requirements

Reader View should utilize Fire Sans and Charis SIL for an optimal reading experience, when supported.

Questions for Requirements:

• Can we detect Character Sets?
• If so, then how accurately?
• Can we ship these fonts with the browser?
• Are we going to encounter rendering issues on older machines/platforms?
• What's the scope for engineering?
• In the case one of the proposed fonts will not render, do we have reliable fall backs?

Minor nit, SIL is responsible for Charis SIL. The homepage is:

It's best to avoid pulling fonts from fontsquirrel, as fonts there have often been post-processed. Better to use the originals, both to get the latest version and to assure that we avoid bugs in fontsquirrel tools, when and if they exist. I think some of the post-processing is also probably a violation of the OFL license, since the name should really be changed when making changes.

Note: From discussion leading up to this bug, we're ok with this not happening for the first version of the reader view (aka Firefox 38), but would like to prioritize it after that. But the breakdown can happen before then.

Is there a way we can ship Fira and Charis SIL, just for the known supported locals in the 38 time frame?

Ah…  I don't think I'm the right person to answer this…
(Or, more accurately, I would need to spend a bunch of time learning stuff, and that time would be better used polishing other things.)
