User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0 Build ID: 20171130105051 Steps to reproduce: Hello, sorry if this is a duplicate but I couln't find similar issue. 1. Go to preferences and select to display empty page on Firefox launch. 2. Go to about:config and set property browser.display.background_color to some other value, for example: #D4D4D4 3. Restart Firefox Actual results: The background color for empty page about:blank which is displayed right after Firefox startup is not hanged to #D4D4D4. Instead, it's #F9F9FA. And here something unusual comes in: click on + button to open a new tab. New tab opened and firefox is switched to this new tab. Now click on the previous tab, the one which was opened right on browser startup. You will see that this time the browser.display.background_color property was actually applied and background color is #D4D4D4. Expected results: background color of about:blank should be set to browser.display.background_color value immediately on Firefox startup without need to open new tabs.

Florian, can you look into this?

(In reply to Dão Gottwald [::dao] from comment #2) > Florian, can you look into this? I would like to investigate soon why we have spurious about:blank loads during startup and when opening new windows. If I manage to avoid them, then we'll no longer have to have hacks that filter out about:blank loads, and fixing bugs like this one should become easy.

Tracking for 59. We are heading into the last beta 58 build tomorrow and then the RC build next week, so a fix for 58 is unlikely (but not impossible).

Might this be related to bug 1418814 and bug 1419152? It looks like those have a fix, and we are waiting for QE to verify before uplifting.

Oh, never mind. I just noticed the "see also" is already in place. I will ask QE to check this bug when they do the verification.

As I said in bug 1419152 comment 15, I expect this to need a different fix (that I'll probably not be comfortable uplifting).

Florian are you still potentially going to work on this issue for 63?

(In reply to Liz Henry (:lizzard) (needinfo? me) from comment #10) > Florian are you still potentially going to work on this issue for 63? I'm not working on this, no. I heard Gijs (currently on PTO) is working on avoiding about:blank loads in new windows, so this may move forward at some point, but I don't expect this to be fixed for 63.

Too late for 62/63 but we could still take a patch for 64/65.

Happy to take a patch in nightly; if it seems low risk enough please feel free to request uplift to 65 beta.

WFM on Mac With Firefox 70 Beta 4.
Reporter, does this work for you on Firefox 69 or 70 Beta now?

Shortly: no.
Longer answer: the color is incorrect on Firefox startup. When I open new tab, the color is correct on new tab. The previous tab doesn't change the color to correct one now (like it did at the time when I reported the issue).

Tested not working as of nightly 71.0a1 (2019-10-09)
You can test this issue by setting your homepage and newtab page to "Blank Page" in the GUI and setting browser.display.background_color to a color like bright red.
First page on browser restart is never red.

The severity field for this bug is relatively low, S3. However, the bug has 3 duplicates and 5 See Also bugs.
:dao, could you consider increasing the bug severity?

The last needinfo from me was triggered in error by recent activity on the bug. I'm clearing the needinfo since this is a very old bug and I don't know if it's still relevant.

Ah, it works for me since some time, but it was reported so long time ago that I don't remember anymore if I used some workaround to get it fixed or you fixed it.
