User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0rc3) Gecko/20020521
BuildID: 20020521
When starting a new message by clicking on a mailto: link in the browser, the
Compose Message windows displays two carets: one in the subject line, and the
second in the first line of the body.
There's a similar bug 56555, but that one is OS2-only, and the position of the
carets is different.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click on a mailto link in the browser
2. The Compose Message window appears, and there are two blinking carets
Expected Results: Just one caret in the subject line.

Does it not do the same on simply creating a new message? Maybe that's not
different enough to have a different cause or fix. Since the To: has already
been completed, next active field is subject. CC to owner of other bug to maybe
dupe this.
When creating a new message, I see only one caret in the To: line, there's no
blinking caret in the body.
there's also Linux bug 86824.

I dont see this in any of the recent builds and in the one I am using now
-20020626. Do you still see this or can we close this bug as WFM.
I see this bug exhibited when clicking mailto: links in build 2002053012. When
manually sending a new message, the bug is not evident. In short, no, it
doesn't work for me.
I am a bit confused - when you say "in short it doesnt work for me" you mean the
bug IS there or ISNT there? Feel free to mark it invalid or WFM.

When clicking a mailto: link, I see two flashing cursors. Therefore, the bug IS
evident.

Could you try a more recent build preferrably this weeks nightly and let me know
if the problem still exists.

I am able to reproduce on MAC 9.1 using branch build 2002-06-26-05. This is not
specific to clicking on a mailto link - happens when I open a new Compose
window. Doesn't happen every time...trying to narrow down to specific
reproducible steps...
Comment 13•23 years ago
|

I still get the exact same behavior (carets in the subject and body) when
clicking a mailto link in build 2002062713 for Windows.
Comment 14•23 years ago
|
||
Reproducible steps (tested on both OS's using 6/26 branch builds:
MAC
1.Launch browser, launch mail
2.Open compose window, compose message and send.
3.Open compose window a second time, window opens with two carets - one in the
To: field and one in the message body.
WINDOWS
1.Click mailto: link in a message, compose window opens with two carets - on in
the Subject field and one in the message body.

FYI, we found the source of our OS/2 specific problem and it was actually
related to our InvertRect drawing when the width is 0.
So before anyone spends a ton of time looking at focus issues with this, you
might want to throw some assertions for 0 in InvertRect and see what happens.
This might have been totally OS/2 specific though.

Reporter: If you start typing, does the text appear in the subject line, the
body or someplace else?
wfm Win2k / 2002053012 (Moz 1.0)
If the text appears in the subject line I'd say it's only cosmetic and severity:
trivial (though it should be fixed).
Comment 20•23 years ago

For me, the text appears in the Subject line when I first start typing.

This still happens on winxp with branch 20020813 for mailto links only. I don't
see it on linux with the same build. When you start to type the text end up in
the subject line and the flashing cursor in the body is still there flashing.
I'm nominating as a polish bug.

If anyone is having trouble reproducing this bug, this is how I first discovered it:
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. (in mail) From the sidebar, select any address in your book.
2. Click Compose or rightclick the name and click "Compose email to".
(Theoretically any type of action that causes a new Compose window to be opened
with the To: line already filled out should reproduce this bug.)
3. A new Compose window opens. The address of your contact is put in the To:
line, and the cursor is placed in the subject line. An additional cursor is
placed in the body of the message. The cursors blink independently. If you
type in the subject, the body cursor continues to blink.

This is really strange, I'm still using the 8-13 branch build and I don't see
the double cursor in my mailto messages anymore. I need to investigate more to
see what other criteria is necessary to see this bug. I also don't see it with
the scenario mentioned above in comment #26, so there must be some other
criteria to see this happen. I will investigate more.
Comment 28•22 years ago
|
||
Here is the criteria to see this bug. It happens on winxp and linux (haven't
tested mac yet) with 8-21 branch builds.
1.)Send youself an email that includes a mail to link
2.)Set you Account setting to INCLUDE A SIGNATURE and COMPOSE IN PLAINTEXT
3.)Open the mail message with the mailto link and click on the link.
You will see two cursors, one in the subject line and one in the body of the
message. If you start typing the subject line has focus, but the body cursor is
still there and flashing. Very confusing.

After reading all the comments here, I noticed that no one has mentioned that
this happens with all new news compositions as well. To reproduce, open a
newsgroup and press the compose button. Simple as that. (2002082814 trunk WinXP).

However, it does not happen with news: compose.

Esther, did you try the steps described in bug 138338 or 160637 ? For me it is a
100% reproducible testcase on 2002090804/Win2k (plain text with signature
enabled). But, it might be similar to comment #26 so as you said, there might be
another criteria we are still missing.
I played with Mail&News Preferences and it doesn't seem to depend on any of
them. I 'm also seeing the following error when following steps of bug 138338
(but probably won't help):
Error: redeclaration of const MOZ_HELP_URI

The behavior of this bug has changed for me on 1.2b/Win98. Now, I only get one
caret - in the message pane. Problem is, the message pane isn't really active.
If I type, nothing appears. I have to click in the message pane to make it
function.

The latter 'changed bug' is fixed in 1.2
The first bug (double carets on mailto: links) is still there.

Comment 43•22 years ago

Not for me, using todays build on Win2K. Instead of having two carets, sometimes
I see no caret at all, when switching from another application window, perhaps
this is related to the change.

I still have some form of this bug in the following situation:
1. compose new message
2. select a different 'from' address / account (how do you call it?)
Caret appears in text-window, but you can't start typing. If you click in the
to-field to type an address, the caret in the text-box does not disappear.
running winME, Mozilla 1.3b

True, changing From indeed places a "fake" caret in the text editor, while focus
(correctly) stays in the From field. Changing summary to reflect current state
of bug, nominating for nsbeta1 (I hate focus bugs). Or should I file a new bug?
Comment 50•22 years ago
|
||
I opose changing the summary of a bug so radically.
I think we need a new bug for the "From" issue and close this bug.
Changing the summary of a bug like this one is agains Bugzilla policy.
Please revert it. Thanks.

One way to reproduce this bug (win2k; mozilla 1.4b) doesn't seem to be mentioned;
1) launch browser, launch mail
2) open a compose window (any method)
3) open a second compose window - and you have two carets!
4) open a third compose window and you have two more carets...

1. Attach/Not Attach signature
2. Text/HTML mode
3. Open 1st/2nd composer

or maybe the "don't get any carets" version, I get confused.
I believe ere%atp.fi just fixed it.
