Each time I try to post a news to either our local news server, or to our ISP provider, it fails if I have already opened the news server folder. I get the message : "Sending of message failed\n. Please verudy that your Mail & Newsgroup accounts are correct and try again. If I close the compose window, store the message in the draft folder, quit mozilla restart it, and post using the draft message it works. NB : nobody has any problems when using either netscape 4 or emacs/gnus. It apperaed in Mozilla around version 0.9.6 but becomes really annoying as I need to restart mozilla each time I want to post a news.
I use mozilla 1.0...
Hi valette - would you mind providing us with an NNTP log? http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#nntp contains instructions, thanks.
I can confirm this on build 2002052918, linux redhat 7.3, using movemail with fetchmail and procmail as my mail environment, modem connection. I can send a message after I open a newsgroup, before I have opened any messages. After opening any messge, I can neither send a new message nor reply to a message. This, for those of us who experience it, is a major bug. Obviously, I think.
> Hi valette - would you mind providing us with an NNTP log? No. I updated to Mozilla 1.1a, and followed the instructions but in that case I can post. So log is not usefull. However, it confirms that Mozilla 1.0 has indeed a bug... NB : however, the Cancel button is not activated on mozilla 1.1a...
Oops. The bug appeared again this morning on Mozilla 1.1a. Unfortunately, the debug options were not activated... I will restart with debug on, let it run and try to send them.
Vallete - the cancel issue is covered in bug 150036. As far as the log goes, I see us issuing a lot of cleanup() calls in the process of shutting down. However, I don't see any NNTP_ERROR or 'failed' text in the log.
Maybe but during this session, the post failed. So maybe there are untraced errors or the error is due to the fact that I also receive a mail in BCC but I doubt that because mail is working fine. You asked for the log, you have it. Try to *USE* news and you will see it fails.
This may be related to bug 146145 and bug 137009. All three bugs relate to the exact same error message when trying to post to a newsgroup or trying to respond to a newsgroup post. And all three bugs seem to apply to a Linux environment only. I have experienced the error described in all three bug reports many times when using Mozilla on Linux (SuSE 8.0). But I have never experienced this problem when running Mozilla on Win 2K.

Also related to bug 142872.

This is still in Mozilla 1.2a (build 2002091016) It seems that different people (and hence bug reports) try to hold different situatuations responsible for when this error occurs. I cannot confirm any of these - I am seeing this not only when replying but also for new news messages, and I am seeing it when the news window is the only one open.
Not being able to post is a major loss of function.

With Mozilla 1.2.1, this bug still occurs, or at least on Linux RH7.2 with the supplied release build. The work-around is to either have the mail window with the folders and the subjects also contain the message you're reading (so you have 1 window and the reply/compose window). The other work-around is to close all *message* windows (for when your folder/subject window does not contain the message you're viewing/replying). Without any knowledge of the Mozilla source, I'd say that "somewhere" there is support for only 1 message window, or post stuff does not retreive the right information from the posting message window.

magnus, have you seen this in recent years? I never have, including bug 142872 and bug 137009
Nope, haven't seen it. Anybody else still see this? Given the last comment was in 2002 i doubt it still exists.
