WebRender today:

Round in layout space in Gecko. This effectively snaps any primitive rects and clip rects if there are no transforms applied. Most of the time, this is correct.
-
Scene building produces shadows and box shadows primitives by using other primitive types. This involves performing some translation and/or inflation of the given primitive rect during scene building.

Frame building performs snapping of primitives using the visible rect. This may cause not only a translation, but also a change in size, if the size is fractional in raster space.

Throughout the code, we assume the size of a primitive does not change. This assumption most affects shaders and segment generation.
WebRender must:
- is fundamentally wrong. The size of a primitive can and will be affected by snapping. This is particularly noticeable when we have a non-repeating image or gradient. The size ends up being off by one pixel, and we begin repeating the image or gradient on one or more edges, causing a visual distortion. This explains why if we stop doing 1), then we produce different results after snapping the rects to otherwise the same positions.
- Proposed solution: Let's stop being clever with snapping. The shaders should just accept the rects as given, and during the visibility passes, we need to calculate what the true origin and size of our rects are. Those will be what are passed to the GPU along the various paths.
- is fundamentally wrong. Part of the reason snapping to the visible rect is more correct is because we do not snap the clips. Gecko will snap each clip individually.
- Proposed solution: Snap clips in relative to their own spatial node like Gecko -- this means clips that are shared between multiple primitives will always clip the same region, even if the raster roots are different. This should help in theory with aligning elements to be flush, as well as avoid the problem of a clip potentially needing multiple GPU cache entries to manage its potential different sizes depending on how it snapped. We must remove the clip leaf optimization during display list building because we need to snap before intersection, not after. Then return to snapping the primitive rect and the primitive clip rect individually in raster space, and finally taking the intersection of these and the already snapped clip chain to determine the visible rect.
- is fundamentally wrong. It relies upon 1) to "snap" the primitives in order to place the shadows correctly. A shadow is not cast by a primitive, it is cast by the snapped primitive.
- Proposed solution: A shadow must base its primitive rect and clips generated (in the cast of box shadows) on the snapped primitive rect from which the shadow is cast. This means we must move these calculations and clip generation from scene building to frame building and update visibility. Box shadows in particular are problematic because it needs to create clip rects that are a translations/scale from the snapped primitive rect, but we can only snap in frame building, and we (currently) only generate clips during scene building. We may need to be careful to ensure the rounded rect clips produced by the box shadow are still shareable by multiple box shadows in the same scene. So to be clear, we need to snap the original primitive/clip rect, translate/scale it, and snap again.
- is fundamentally wrong. This is faking snapping, and works most of the time due to the relative rarity of fractional transforms and offsets.
- Proposed solution: Solve 2), 3) and 4), and then we can finally stop doing 1).

Aside from 2) shadows, which are still in progress, the try results suggest this is a workable model. It also some open snapping bugs as well as not breaking already fixed ones.

Repeating/background images may have extra parameters such the stretch
size and tile spacing, that non-repeating images do not require. By
splitting these apart, we can make it easier to infer what we should do
if snapping changes the size of an image primitive, in addition to
reducing the display list size for non-repeating images.

This will be rewritten in a later patch in the series. The shaders will
be provided the correct information and will no longer need to concern
themselves with snapping.

Rounding in layout pixels is very close to snapping in raster pixels if
there are no transforms involved. This is why it worked most of the time
and fell flat in many edge cases. In future parts of this series, we
will trust scene building and frame building to do the heavy lifting for
snapping purposes.

Now that rounding has been removed from Gecko, we need to start snapping
properly in WebRender. Snapping can change the size of a primitive, and
thus it is problematic to do any later than scene building due to the
GPU caching and sharing of data between clips and such that only differ
in their positioning.
This patch produces a snapping transform which allows any primitive to
snap using information known during scene building. This excludes
animated tranforms which are assumed to be the identity. This allows for
primitives that are marked as will-change: transform but given no
initial transform to render the same as primitives that are not. This
also excludes scroll positioning because that is not known until frame
building. A follow up patch will deal with that.

The snapping during scene building is unable to take into account scroll
offsets. Since we have already snapped the primitive rects in the raster
space, we know that this can only result in a translation rather than a
size change, and thus is safe to do during frame building.

We need to snap the clips individually, because if we do intersections
before snapping, then they produce a different/incorrect result. When
you snap individually, it helps to maintain consider clipping of
different items relative to each other.
