Steps to reproduce:

  1. Delete a a message from an account, in this case AOL Mail
  2. Find the deleted message in Trash and click "Move to Inbox again"
  3. The message is moved to another account, in this case Yandex Mail

Actual results:

The deleted message is not restored to the account from which it's deleted

Expected results:

The message should be restored to the account from which it's deleted

The 'move to Inbox again' was probably created when you had previously moved an email to the Yandex Inbox.

Senario:
In account 'B', I move an email from 'Inbox' to 'Online Orders'.
In account 'A', I have a folder called 'Bugzilla' receiving filtered emails for Bugzilla - I delete an email.
If I go to my Account 'A' - 'Deleted' folder and select that Bugzilla email - right click offers 'Move to Online Orders again' which is what I used previously eg: 'Move to' > Account B > 'Online Orders' folder.

In this case it is obvious what is offered and is not what I require. I do not want to move that deleted email to a different account in an irrelevant folder.
But that senario does explain what is going on.

In the reported case, it is not so obvious, it is likely you moved an email to the Yandex Inbox. Then later deleted an email from the AOL Inbox. So when you wanted to return that deleted email, the 'Move to Inbox again' seemed correct - you did want to move email back to Inbox - but what Inbox was that option talking about? That is not known by looking purely at the drop down option.
I can replicate that very easily.

If you had just deleted it and immediately thought that was wrong then the Ctrl+z to Undo that action could be used.

So, the last 'move to' option you previously had used is not necessarilly a restore to the Inbox you desire.

This has been how Thunderbird has worked for as long as I can remember.

Perhaps, there could be an improvement.
I'm not sure how the info 'Move to X folder again' could be improved to show the account name as it could end up being rather long.

Could separating the information which is displayed work?
so that the 'Move to Inbox again' would only be displayed if you were still operating within same account when the option to move to Inbox was used.

Additional function suggestion:
create a 'restore' drop down option OR header button, so emails can be moved back to which ever folder they previously were located.

Wayne , thoughts on these ideas ?

I think you accurately describe the situation(s). I don't see a "restore" addition being frequently used, and for that reason I doubt it would be added But I could be wrong. I would think this has been requested befroe - please review https://mzl.la/3DFBACV

Summary: I deleted a message from an email account and when i "Move to Inbox again" it's moved to another account → Deleted a message from an email account, "Move to Inbox again", move goes to another account

This bug is invalid as reported (based on a misunderstanding of the feature, required improvements notwithstanding).
It's also not actionable. All the nice ideas of Anje's comment 1 are now covered in other bugs: Some pre-existing, plus I've just filed the rest cleanly. So we can close this.

(In reply to Anje from comment #1)

The 'move to Inbox again' was probably created when you had previously moved an email to the Yandex Inbox.

Yep. Which makes this invalid as a bug, even though it's caused by some sort of ux-discovery problem on TB's side.

In the reported case, it is not so obvious, it is likely you moved an email to the Yandex Inbox. Then later deleted an email from the AOL Inbox. So when you wanted to return that deleted email, the 'Move to Inbox again' seemed correct - you did want to move email back to Inbox -

Bug 512661 suggests removing the word "again" to remove this notion. However, as Wayne has pointed out, that would all but remove the distinction between this command and the plain vanilla Move to > somefolder - not good for support and documentation.

but what Inbox was that option talking about? That is not known by looking purely at the drop down option.

That's the key issue here.

Perhaps, there could be an improvement.
I'm not sure how the info 'Move to X folder again' could be improved to show the account name as it could end up being rather long.

I've just filed bug 1814450 where I suggest at least having a tooltip with the full folder path on the menuitem. Also we have Wayne's Bug 456444 on record.

Could separating the information which is displayed work?
so that the 'Move to Inbox again' would only be displayed if you were still operating within same account when the option to move to Inbox was used.

Bug 382104 suggests making the entire command per-account. Non-trivial, and would need more thought as it will probably break other use cases.

Additional function suggestion:
create a 'restore' drop down option OR header button, so emails can be moved back to which ever folder they previously were located.

Thanks, I've filed that idea cleanly as bug 1814457.
