I would like to eliminate periodically all the newsgroup messages except the
ones that I marked with ''important'' or something like that

this is really an indispensable feature

This can be done if we have Label as a critaria in news filters. This may be
dupe of bug 192582

"Label" as criterion is already implemented?  Not in 2004.  See bug 217034.

I agree that reporter's original issue is filter news after the fact 
(bug 178870), but he also requests some means of "eliminating" old newsgroup 
messages.

The requested filtering could be handled via Label, or via Flag (bug 201433).  
But in the context of news, it would be much cleaner to Watch the important 
threads, and implementing (per bug 73562)
  View | Threads | Watched Threads
     (or Watched Threads and Unread Threads)


Given the restrictions on news filtering already, even if bug 201433 and 
bug 217034 were implemented, they'd probably not be available in News (or IMAP), 
which is probably part of what this bug was originally about.

sorry for the spam.  making bugzilla reflect reality as I'm not working on these bugs.  filter on FOOBARCHEESE to remove these in bulk.

this can easily be done with view, for example "does not contain" important works. But still not possible with filter.
