Environment : trunc, Build ID: 2002102704, Win32-talkback.zip, Win-ME Although bug 41539 has been closed with RESOLVED/FIXED, problem still occurs for bookmark of local directory in MS Windows environment. I could not open bookmark of local directory from (1) Menu/Bookmarks, (2) Personal Toolbar/Bookmarks. URI becomes file:///D:/dir-1/dir-2/ or file:///D|/dir-1/dir-2/ usually in Windows world. Note: I could open it through context menu when Personal Toolbar item, Sidebar bookmark and BookmarkManager. ( "Open in new tab" is NOT available in context menu of Sidebar/Bookmarks ) ( and BookmarkManager. But this is a different problem.) I guess such treatment of a bookmark of local directory as a bookmark folder is mainly for IE Favarites. Expansion of user created normal bookmarks should be deactivated. If many users believes that a bookmark of local directory will be expaned as a bookmark folder, user option of a bookmark, normal bookmark mode or IE Favarite mode, may be a good solution.

I found a workaround of this problem. With 2002122908-trunc/Win-Me, when I changed URI field of bookmark property to OS specific file-path-name format suchs as "D:\", it worked as expected. "D:\" was treated as an usual bookmark. This problem occurs only when bookmark property has valid URI format such as file:///d:/, which is created by bookmark-menu.
That workaround does not work in MacOSX/Linux. Mozilla prepends a http:// before any path. May work on DOS based systems because they have a : in the path.

With Mozilla for OS/2, file:///d|/directory/ does nothing. No directory or file is listed. I guess that Mozilla for OS/2 does not have local directory expantion function, because no one want "IE Favarite" support OS/2.

Contrary to comment #8 my Mozilla 1.3b for OS/2 treats URIs for files (file:///D:/) in bookmark like bookmark folders. If they reside on the personal bookmark bar, they open a drop down menu. If they are in the bookmarks file, they are treated as bookmark folders. The workaround from #5 works on OS/2, although OS/2 is not DOS based, but knows drive letters. But still, a valid URI for a directory is preferrable over OS specific notation. And, as I wrote in bug 196220, a right-click on a bookmark on the personal bookmark bar show inconsistency: "Open" creates a drop down list with all items in the directory "Open in New Window" opens a new window containing the directory as expected "Open in New Tab" opens a new tab containing the directory as expected.

What's worse, on Linux (confirm others?) context menu appears only for top-level items (like folders) in Personal Toolbar and the workaround won't work for submenu items - so I can't open a folder in a submenu. Additionally, since sorting subfolders works only in windowed view and bookmark subfolders remain unsorted, it's pure hell to look through the context menu with some 400 subfolders in random order, like when you have bookmarked /usr/share/doc! In this case, "windowed view" is the only way to go. Suggested solutions: Either be able to click (or release, depending on method of opening) LMB on a IE-folder style menu item to open it, or add "open this folder" to top of the content list (similar to "file here" from MailNews copy/move context menu for folders with subfolders in them)

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030327 Confirming WFM. This replaces the "subfolder" solution though - much better than it was but not ideal (the user should have a choice between folder-style and bookmark-style, best if both provided at the same time)
