All quoted lines beginning with a '>' in the XFree86-xpert mail archives are
sloped, see URL. This is RH8 GTK2/Xft build 2002111012 from kommodo.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to the specified URL.
2. Behold the sloped text.
Actual Results:
Lines beginning with '>' were sloped.
Expected Results:
The lines should not have been sloped.
Not sure what you mean by "sloped" but the text there is intentionally designed
to appear in italics.

The source code looks like this:
> I have experimented with lwm (light weight window manager). I had
noticed
So this is intentional, and the italics are displayed in IE5 and Opera6 as well.
Marking Invalid.

it DOES appear that way, but...
Reporter : scroll the text in italics in such a way that it aligns with the
winodow border. I think you will see that the lines are not sloped, but in fact
are perfectly horizontal.
So, nomintating this one for WFM.
If you repeat my little experiment and find the lines to be horizontal (instead
of sloped) you can mark it as WorksForMe yourself.

No, I DO mean sloped, not italic. Check this screenshot:

It seems that all text using the font 'monospace' as the monospaced font is
sloped. Changing the font to 'Courier New' in prefs seems to fix this.

I'm not seeing this. However, ->blizzard.

which font were you using for monospaced fonts when you saw the bug?
could this be theme related? Have you tried with a clean profile and one of the
standard Moz themes?

I get the same result with a freshly created profile and the 'Classic' theme.
The fon used is called 'monospace' but 'Andale Mono' looks the same and gives
the same result, so they are probably the same on my system. The font seems to
work correctly when set as my gnome2 system font. Changed the severity to
trivial since I can work around this by choosing any other font as my monspaced
font. 'Andale Mono' works fine when set as the proportional font btw.
Severity: normal → trivial

That's a bug in freetype 2.1.2. Please either get the fixed rpm from Red Hat
(our rpm includes a patch that fixes it - see Red Hat 8.0) or downgrade to an
older freetype version.
(This is quite possibly one of my most favorite bugs of all time, if only just
for the visual effect.)

I updated to freetype 2.1.3rc3 and the bug went away, thaks! My fonts seem less
blurry too, so it's a double win.
