This is a follow up to bug 1813492.
Testing with thunderbird 112.0a1 20230312
Steps to reproduce
- Open Thunderbird and use tab / shift+tab or F6 / shift+F6 to focus the message list
- Navigate up and down using the arrow keys and notice how changing the selection fires focus events so assistive tools such as screen readers can report the focused item in the list of messages.
- Press the end key to focus most recent message.
- Now just wait for new message to arrive or send a message to your-self from another device.
- When the message notification pops up, notice the message is displayed on the UI and the second recent message is focused.
- Now press the down arrow key to navigate to the new message.
Actual results
Screen reader does not report new message as it receives the focus.
Expected
- Focus events should work the same for all the items in the message list even these added into the list.
When changing to another folder and back, the new message can be navigated to and the screen reader does report the focus change.

Argh! Now I've noticed this is intermittent. I can no longer reproduce it reliably.

Hello,
I think this needs more testing.
I can remember it has happened to me two days ago with Thunderbird 113.0a1 20230328 however now when I am specifically testing it with Thunderbird 113.0a1 20230329 by sending an email to my- self, I can't reproduce it right now.

I am currently on Thunderbird 118 daily and for quite some time I can no longer notice this so I suspect it is solved.
