In bug 1844408, we forgot to consider that All events was also the way to show past events.
I semi frequently want to see what and when I did certain things, and that's no longer possible. I think we need to add an "All Past Events" entry.

Not just 2 years or Past Events. All Events is required. I'm not a squirrel, I don't just need to remember what's recent. I need my whole history.
I do calendar reviews regularly and dupe old entries from previous years for future ones. Before this feature was removed, it took me about 15mins to do calendar maintenance. Now it takes forever bc it forces me to mentally remember when I did everything in my past. It's not practical.

I also miss the ability to see all events. I believe this feature was removed as a workaround to the bug related to recurring event that have no end date causing never ending memory build-up and crashes. Couldn't you simply restore the All Events view but limit displaying those specific recurring events to a 3, 5 or 10 years window from current date?

No point in reducing the recurring events for long term like that. All Events are required, esp for those with medical needs not just basic admin.

Would you have an example user case where you would need to see a recurring event that scheduled 5 years+ in past or future?
Eventually for those rare occasions you could have a link indicating you would like to show more available events in future (or past) to show additional 5years+ events.
I am talking about the list of events in the unifinder not the calendar itself where such events would always appear shown when the calendar view date period is selected accordingly.

When doing calendar maintenance, and making broadscale changes, I need to bring up these events by performing a simple keyword search to bring up and change some but not all instances of recurring events.
e.g. an event recurring every 5 months for 12 years to perform maintenance for a specific item.
To handle this, or to update a note and time and date for some of these instances, not remembering which ones to change until seeing the event, it's unproductive to have to keep changing search filter back and forth to find the events.
I need the original All Events restored, but also all the recurring events as an option.

Just updated to 'Nebula': Please bring "All Events" back!!
I currently can't easily filter the notes I wrote on past events (especially the really old ones that I can't recall easily). I can't check how I had setup some recurring events that I don't use anymore, etc.
Not being able to access easily what I have done in the past is really killing me at the moment. If I knew this would happen, I would have never upgraded to Nebula.

I understand that there may be problems with recurring events in the future. I was happy with the way events were displayed until TB 115. To give you an example of why the calendar is no longer useful to me. I've used the calendar for both personal and professional purposes. I kept track of the hours I worked for my clients. Hours that hadn't been invoiced yet got the category "clients". After a few months or weeks, I filter all the events for that category to collect the hours, write invoices and change the category to "customers". Sometimes I search for events related to specific names to see all the hours I have worked for them. I can see immediately whether the invoices are out or not. All this is no longer possible or way more difficult.

I just noticed the change, too, because I can now only search for future events which are within the next 12 months. I am used to being able to search for "all future events" as well as "past events." I was using Sunbird stand-alone calendar on my 14-year-old Windows 7 laptop, and I changed to the integrated Thunderbird calendar and mail program when I got a Windows 10 laptop just over 5 years ago. Recently that laptop died and I replaced it with a new Mac. I think I still had the same search options on the Mac until it updated until the new version. So why did this just suddenly become a problem? I have some calendar entries for 2026 that I would like to include in a search tonight. Now I can't pull them up! Also, I have previously done searches for past events when I wanted to find out when something occurred a year or a few years ago.
Please bring back BOTH the ability to search for "ALL FUTURE events" as well as "ALL PAST events." If recurring events have somehow become a problem, perhaps you could configure the code to show only the first entry when searching "all past events" or the earliest occurring future entry when showing "all future events."
Thank you.

The new UI focuses on showing all occurrences (recurring included) of events as they happen.
I understand that users may want to see this, along the calendar view that visually shows events per day/week/month.
It seems to me that the "All events" choice was not about showing all occurrences of recurring events, but all "created" events (the VEVENT itself).
So for example in the case of a recurring event, I only expect this specific view to show one entry.
In previous versions it would show the initial occurrence start/end date, which is fine by me. And if I wish, by opening this event I can see in the details its recurrence, and modify it (the first occurrence itself, or the recurring) if I need.
Not showing all occurrences of recurring events eliminates the case of "recurring event that have no end date causing never ending memory build-up and crashes".
So maybe the name could be changed, e.g. to "All created events" instead of "All events", to emphasize the fact it won't show all occurrences but only the VEVENT entries ?

I disagree with the idea that "All Events" choice would show only one event for recurring event (the created one). It should show all recurring events in the list as well... to a certain limit in future/past time... where you could have option to display more in past/future as needed or the size of the current list view... loading more as you scroll up or down.
Recurring events are individual event themself, you can modify all recurring events or an individual one so that shall remain fully visible and accessible in the list of events. TB shall not hide any events in the "All Events" view.

To clarify, what I was saying is that both needs are valid and could be addressed:
- see all recurring events to a certain limit: they are already considering this
- show all VEVENTs: it was the "All events" behaviour in the previous version (115), and some users are dissatisfied with the fact they can't see this anymore; not showing all occurrences here prevents cluttering the view too much and helps a lot to find what you are searching for
I was not asking for thunderbird to disregard the needs of other users.

Just discovered this problem in beta 129.0b6 when I went to check on my list of F1 events and wondered why so many were missing.
as an example : I keep old F1 events and then use to update or create new when I get a new set of dates and add additional if new venues. I also keep info on medical events and do not delete as they act as a record.
It seems I have no ability to search for data except for this month and in the future. I just tried to locate data on when my mother last attended a specific hospital appointment to discover none were displayed. This makes you wonder if you have really lost data or whether Thunderbird has a serious bug. But this bug report implies this is intentional.
I really need this fixing - fortunately, I'm also still running version 115.13.0 so a duplicate set of data is available.
This bug has confirmed I must not upgrade to 128* until it's fixed, so I'll be watching this bug report for information on fix and which in version I can expect to see it.

I wonder if this is the "squeaky wheel getting the grease," because it seems to have been changed based on complaints of not being able to see every instance of a recurring event and did not take into account that many users want to search without a timeframe. Perhaps the development team could ask users for feedback before making major changes in the future. Maybe a compromise could be found.
Personally, I don't understand why every single instance of a recurring event would need to show up in a search list. The earliest occurrence within the time frame specified - whether past or future - should show up and it should be noted in the list as a recurring event; it should also show the specifics of the recurrence (daily, weekly, etc., and the ending date, or say "forever" if there is no end date). If someone needs to edit a specific entry of the recurrence, they should be able to easily navigate to that specific date. Also, if there are specific entries which have been edited and do not follow the recurrence pattern, those events should show up in the list as separate entries.

I do see that a fix is planned to bring back "Past Events and All Events." However, this needs to be updated to also include "All Future Events." It's not just absurd to handicap digital calendar access like this, but it's also a step backwards in the evolution from analogue to digital formats because it requires the user to revert to all those paper calendars they were told to destroy in favour of the new digital format. What's the point of a digital calendar if we still have to keep a hard copy? It's unacceptable!

I submitted an idea that turns out it may have been a duplicate.
If they added "All Events" and "Past Events", do you think All Events
would suffice to include All Future Events.
I think the issue is that when any current view filter is applied, it limits the time window, but
an All Events selector would not limit the time window, so that Future Events should appear
beyond the present, maximum 12 month window.
What is also important is that any SEARCHES apply to the filter selected.
Not being able to search both past and future (beyond 12 months) is a major bummer.
"All Events", wherein no time filters are imposed would allow truly All Event Viewing and Searching
without any time restrictions, past or future...(I think).

This seems to be going around in circles, perhaps unnecessarily. There is much talk about the filters:
- past vs future vs all
- today, 7 days, 14 days, 31 days
- 6 months, 1 year
I don't think this amount of granularity is needed in any search facility. It's not the way most of us think. Here's a bit of perspective on this...
I have been using Sunbird calendar (now defunct, reborn as Lightning, then as Thunderbird calendar) for 15+ years. I used the search facility a LOT, e.g. every day. Not once, have I ever applied a date filter (as in the list above). The default is "All events" (the entire calendar database) and that's what I have always used. I have never embarked on a search thinking "I want to look only 2 weeks ahead or behind" or "just search today". To me, that's unnecessary and it requires a bit more work on my part to actually think about when the event might have occurred. I've always just entered "dentist" (for example), and then sorted the list by date (perhaps 50-100 entries?), running my eye up and down through the list until I find the one I want. What I'm saying is that it's much easier, shorter and simpler, to just search the entire calendar database, sort by date, and then visually find the entry I'm looking for. Your eyes can scan that list faster, correlate the "title" and "date" entries and locate the one you're looking for. It's faster than thinking "do I want to search in the past or next 2 weeks". And if you get the filter wrong, and don't find it, you'll have to do the search again, e.g. "perhaps I was wrong - maybe I need to search 1 month back or ahead". And if that still doesn't find it, you'll widen it to 6 months or a year before eventually finding it where you didn't think it was. Or maybe the event doesn't exist at all - you forgot to enter it. How much time are you going to spend trying to think about the date when it might have occurred? That is such a complete waste of time. It's like trying to read a newspaper through the mail slot in the door, line-by-line. This is ridiculous - it's not the best use of your brain. The process of using your eyes to scan a list of all search results to find a specific entry is faster than you think and is much more efficient than thinking about what date filter you should select, and hoping you get it right. Use the computer to do the things it does best. Use your brain/eyes for the things it does best.
If you're looking for something that happened in the last 2 weeks or next 2 weeks, you probably have a pretty good idea of the date of the event, e.g. middle of next or last month. So first you have to think about the current date, e.g. July 23, and then add or subtract 14 days (for example) to come up with the approximate date limit (e.g. .July 9 or August 6). Then you have to think about whether that filter will find the event that you know (or hope!) is approximately in the middle of the month or not. But if you're not sure, you might choose a wider filter, e.g. past/next month or perhaps past/next 6 months. If you find it, you're done. But if you don't find it, you won't know if the event occurred on July 6 or August 8 (just outside of the 14 days), because you have rejected all of the results for those other dates. Then you have to question whether your date filter was appropriate or not, and then you're going to need to change it to widen the search. Just do a search using "all events" (the entire calendar), sort by date and then use your brain and eyes to scan up and down the list to find what you're looking for.
Another factor is the passage of time. How many times have you said "I think that happened 2 weeks ago", only to find out that it was 6 weeks ago? Time passes more quickly than you think (especially as you age) and at the same time, your memory of the date of the event also degrades over time, especially if you have a very busy life, where all of the events run into each other and you're just hanging on, trying to manage your busy life using the calendar. We use computer databases to offload information and de-clutter our brain. So use the computer to retrieve it with as little thinking as possible.
In other words, all that's required is to search "all events" and let your brain deal with the results. I'm not going to suggest that you remove any of the filters (today, 7 days, 14 days, 31 days, past/future, etc.), because someone other than me may actually find those useful. And I think we all know what happens when you start removing things. However, perhaps you should refrain from making it any more complex than it is by adding even more filters and using descriptive phrases "past and future events" that require people to think about what it means. I ask those people who are asking for specific date filters to think about it and ask yourself "do I really need this" or "will this make it easier for me" or "can I do the same thing without wasting time trying to choose a date filter". If the vast majority of people are happy with "all events" (entire database) and don't need to distinguish between past/future or restrict the search in any way, then there's no need to make it any more complex than it is.
You can add whatever date filters you want, but I will never use them - I will always search the entire calendar with "all events" and let my brain/eyes do the rest, much more efficiently than thinking about limiting the search by date. All I ask is that "all events" be the default so I never have to look at the list of date filters. And please don't call it "past and future events" - just call it "all events", short and simple.
You don't have to remove existing filters, just think carefully about adding 10 more. The more filters that are added, the more complex and cluttered the code becomes. A simple code base, free from special cases and options, is the best asset.

Well, there are times when I do not want past events in my search; if I searched for a keyword using "all events," the previous events would clutter my search results if I only want to see what's coming up in the future. The "Events in ..." drop down should only work if you do a search, the much needed return of "All Events" and adding All Past Events would be good.
The "Currently Selected Day" is buggy, I clicked on Thursday and it shows me stuff for Thursday from 00:00 to 23:59 and Friday at 00:00. Set 2 all day events on consecutive days and click on the first day on the small calendar to the left, you'll see both.
The list below the search should be blank (or hidden) until you do a search, then it should show up. Auto-complete would be very useful in this list of the existing items.

I would point out that "All Events" sorts future events above past events in the display pane, so the clutter is quite well buried. I've never had a problem seeing future vs. past, and don't understand how supppressing all past events improves the visibility of future events.

Since we no longer have the "all events" option, I can't verify your statement. However, searching for "events in the next 12 months" shows me events beginning with the earliest. There's a very limited amount of space showing the search results, so it's better to limit the list as much as possible. (I would upload a screenshot, but I don't see an option to do that here.) I search for specific things but I'm usually only looking for future reminders regarding a specific subject. I do also occasionally also search for something specific in the past. I don't think I've ever searched for both past and future events at the same time, but I can understand that others might have a need to search "all" events.

My calendar is not just my future, it is also my journal of days gone past. I recently upgraded to 128 on debian/sid and now I can't find past medical information on my cat. 🐈⬛
"All Events" should be an option, and should be the default, as it was, because it is the easiest to use when typing text. Users can always refine their search later. With a restrictive search option selected, one that I did not choose, I was confused when my search yielded no results.
Consider adding a separate time-range UI element. Having a choice of fixed time ranges is not going to scale well. I might want to search a five-month time range starting six years ago.

Also voting for fixing this ASAP! A search function that doesn't return what I search for is useless.
As workaround, there's an addon that brings search +/- 50 years back as additional selectable options:

It’s hard to understand how a key feature, searching the entirety of a calendar, was lost and then has not been addressed in nearly a year. Being unable to search a calendar for historical data makes all the data inaccessible and useless. This needs to have been fixed 11 months ago.
I’ve installed and tested the referenced XPI which claims to offer the ability to search for “All Events”. This plugin renders Thunderbird’s calendar unusable.

That search defaults only to only untriaged questions for some reason.

Also voting for fixing this ASAP! A search function that doesn't return what I search for is useless.

I do see that a fix is planned to bring back "Past Events and All Events." However, this needs to be updated to also include "All Future Events." There are times when I want to do a keyword search for all events in the future; I do not want to be limited to a one-year timeline. Please update D212771 to also include "All Future Events." Thank you. https://phabricator.services.mozilla.com/D212771
I submitted an idea that turns out it may have been a duplicate.
If they added "All Events" and "Past Events", do you think All Events
would suffice to include All Future Events.I think the issue is that when any current view filter is applied, it limits the time window, but
an All Events selector would not limit the time window, so that Future Events should appear
beyond the present, maximum 12 month window. What is also important is that any SEARCHES apply to the filter selected.
Not being able to search both past and future (beyond 12 months) is a major bummer."All Events", wherein no time filters are imposed would allow truly All Event Viewing and Searching
without any time restrictions, past or future...(I think).Well, there are times when I do not want past events in my search; if I searched for a keyword using "all events," the previous events would clutter my search results if I only want to see what's coming up in the future. I have more past events than future events, so I would prefer to bring back the old options of searching for "past" or "future" events, as well as "all" events.
I too think that in addition to "All Events" there should be both "Past Events" and "Future Events".
Is there any particular reason to consider "Past Events" a special case and not "Future Events" (or viceversa), since "All Events" covers both anyway? If "Past Events" or "Future Events" is added as a special case in addition to "All Events", I don't see why there shouldn't also be the opposite, considering that both serve to declutter search results if one is only interested in past or future events.

[Approval Request Comment]
Regression caused by (bug #): bug 1844408
User impact if declined: missing functionality that used to exist
Testing completed (on c-c, etc.): c-c
Risk to taking this patch (and alternatives if risky): not a huge risk, but good to bake it on beta for a bit

Many thanks to all those concerned with sorting out this issue.
I can confirm 'All Events' is working in beta 131.0b2

This fix has caused a big problem - please see bug 1919677
There is a freezing - inability to scroll in 'All Events' and an inability to search in All Events due to the volume (number) of items in list.
Example: In version 115.15.0 , only the original event is displayed in All Events not each recurring event.
Such as setting up a birthday which uses Repeat yearly and Until forever.
I notice that in cuurent release 128.0.3 and in beta 131.0b5 - 'forever' is every year until 2124 - that's 100 years from now!
The patch that landed adds Past events (limited to -100yrs) and All events (limited to +-100yrs).
I'm not even going to live that long :)
Perhaps the 'forever' should be set for something less than 100 years from now. I've some birthdays created as events say three years ago, so that's 103 years OR 103 items in list just for one birthday.
Now I can remove a birthday from the past if required but that's not going to make much difference or I can alter the Repeat Until to never use 'forever' but set to eg: a 10 year
Perhaps it would be a useful to not include all the identical repeat occurances like it used to be in version 115.15.0 ?
