This also occurs when attempting to install Thunderbird 2.0 using the standard directory name but to a drive other than C, such as D:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\. This D drive directory already has Thunderbird 1.5 installed, so the custom install used to work correctly. Unfortunately, after getting the error, Thunderbird 1.5 no longer works and it must be reinstalled.

Whatever this was (and without the error message, who knows?), it was with a completely different installer than the current one. Comment 3, while an error message, wasn't this, but a duplicate of one of the many mozMapi32.dll in use bugs. If the "this" in comment 4 was also "this mozMapi32.dll error" then it's a duplicate too; if not, and if it's still possible to reproduce and get the actual error message, please file it as a new bug with excruciatingly extensive detail.
