User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040803
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040803
Links in the Back/Forward dropdown menus display a tooltip when they are moused
over. The tooltip causes the link in question to lose focus.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open browser.
2. Visit another URL.
3. Click arrow beside Back button in browser to show submenu with previous pages
you can navigate to.
4. Move mouse over the URL.
5. The link being moused over highlights.
6. The "Go back one page" tooltip then appears right under the mouse.
Actual Results:
The tooltip then disappears and the highlighted link loses its focus.
Expected Results:
Tooltip should not cause the link in question to lose focus.
Pressing Enter while the link is focused activates the link, but pressing Enter
after the tooltip has been displayed does nothing. The tooltips might be
mispositioned -- Firefox places them below the mouse pointer, which seems like a
better spot then directly under the tip of the mouse pointer.
Also, this was seen in both the Classic and Modern Mozilla themes.
I see this behaviour with rv:1.8a2 Gecko/20040702 but with Mozilla 1.7.1 the
tooltip pops up below the mouse pointer (like Firefox 0.9.1). Could bug 244385
be the same problem in another place?

Duplicating bug 254770 to this one:
{{
+(K) regression, between "v1.7 branch" and v1.8a1.
This is due to the tooltip appearing right under the mouse cursor,
instead of one (text) line under the mouse cursor !
}}

I've reproduced this bug in nightly builds as far back as Gecko/20040530,
but for some reason, my debug without symbols doesn't have this problem.

> I've reproduced this bug in nightly builds as far back as Gecko/20040530,
It would seem that (I don't have the exact dates anymore...)
v1.7final branched sometime between 2004.04.10 and .15;
v1.8a1 was released sometime between 2004.04.19 and .05.21 (Gecko/20040520 !!?).
Then you should reproduce this bug with older builds too !?
See bug 244385 comment 10, if it applies !?
> but for some reason, my debug without symbols doesn't have this problem.
I'm only using Windows releases here: v1.7(.x), v1.8a1(-v1.8a2).

I see bug 244385 as well.

Neil:
2004-05-05-10-trunk
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.8a) Gecko/20040505
works :-)
But there is not any Windows nightly until _after_ 2004-05-31-10-trunk :-(
Yet it seems that there are Linux nigthlies available for you to test:
regression timeframe currently is 2004.05.05 <==> 2004.05.20.
Unless this timeframe is already enough for a checkin search !?

bz or mvl, can one of you guys have a look at this? It's been suggested that
it's fallout from bug 191839
Comment 15•21 years ago
|

I'll bet $20 it's not fallout from bug 191839. That bug didn't touch anything
within leagues of the code here.
Furthermore, this bug worksforme with a current trunk build on Linux.

I'm not sure because I have patched trees but my linux build displays a tooltip
without clearing the highlight while my windows build displays no tooltip.

This seems like something we want to get resolved for 1.8a6 and while I'm loathe
to take any significant focus changes this late in the cycle, it sure would be
nice to get this into the alpha. If not, we probably need to shoot for early beta.
If this is windows only, who can help?

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a6) Gecko/20050108
Firefox/1.0+
The same problem appears when reading the tooltip for "subscribe to RSS" box.
1. Also visit a site with an rss feed (eg http://news.bbc.co.uk/ )
2. Left Click on 'Add Live Bookmark' icon in the bottom right of the browser. A
box appears above the icon.
3. Hover over the 'subscribe to rss..."
Expect to see a tooltip appear below the icon (a la FF1.0) but instead the
tooltip gets shown over the mouse-pointer, which triggers the button and then
makes the tooltip disappear before you can read it. FF1.0 did not do this.

This seems fixed to me as of Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US;
rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0+ actually it might have been fixed earlier,
but i've only just noticed it.

Why should the highlighting be one line below the cursor? It sure would be
strange to have to move your mouse to the item above the one you really wanted.

Because that is how it is _everywhere_ else !
(Try the Back/Forward/Reload buttons for examples)

My mistake: the "highlight" is fine !
It's the _tooltip_ which needs to be "below" the mouse cursor...
Comment 31•20 years ago
|

Ok. I got confused because the comment said that the highlight was fine, but it
was not below the cursor. I think that might need to be a separate bug. Anyone?

Jerry, I don't think we need a separate bug for the location of the tooltip.
This bug depends upon bug 244385 and no patches were registered for either this
bug (bug 254224) or bug 244385. Something was changed or patched which affected
the tooltips.

Tooltips for forward/back are broken for me. Now when hovering over a
back/forward submenu item, i either get a tooltip that's a tiny box with no text
in, or the message "go back a page" or "go forward a page".

This behaviour was there before this bug:
I suggest you file a separate report, unless you can find an existing one
(should be...).
