This problem actually has been in place for a long time -- TB 1.0 and 1.5 as well as 2a1 builds exhibit it. I also see it in Seamonkey 1.0.

However, this bug no longer exists on the trunk -- I don't see the behavior in TB 3a1-0327 nor in Seamonkey 1.5a-0220. (I had thought the difference was due to the patch for bug 162361, but that's not in this Seamonkey build.)

The trunk builds exhibit another, lesser problem, to be reported in a different bug.

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Integrate attachment 141675 [details] (bug 234681) into a mail folder.
2) View it
3) Drag one of the Unicode-named attachments to the desktop

Actual results:
3) Error pops up as soon as the mouse gets over the drag target:
"Unable to save attachment. Please check your file name and try again later."
Program stops responding to the mouse -- error can only be cleared by typing
<space> or <enter>. This is an apparent hang, since your hand is already on
the mouse (due to dragging) so the natural thing to try is to close the box
  with the mouse.

Expected results:
3) File can be dropped onto desktop.
Sorry, that dependency was left on in error.
No longer depends on: 162361

Compare this bug's symptoms to bug 317076 comment 1 -- altho the weird symptoms described there doesn't seem to apply to this bug.

Testing this with a filename that contains a simple ISO-8859-1 8bit character, there isn't a problem. This bug appears to be restricted to multibyte characters... or perhaps multibyte encodings (e.g. UTF-8 representation of 8859 characters). To wit:

The dupe has a URL pointing to a screen capture where the filename appears to contain all ISO-8859-1 characters, and yet reporter encounters the same error and hang.
This WFM with TB 2b1-1122, Win2K.
