As in the summary, I wish there existed the possibility to organize one's contacts in the address book in a tree-structure, like you can do with your mails. This is of course very different to the functionality of a "list".

Reproducible: Always
This looks like a duplicate of core address book bug 75711 -> marking as such. Please re-open with an explaination as to why if you think I'm wrong.

I think you are right, provided the solution would also allow a tree structure, not only one group level. Sorry, for not having found the bug in the first place. A pity that the request does not seem to get a lot of attention, since it was first issued 2001!
This is a request to "organize contacts in a nested, multilevel (not only one level) tree-structure":

example:

• contacts in France
  • friends
  • family
  • sport
  • work
    • company 1
      • department A
      • department B
      • department C
    • company 2
      • department A
      • department B
• contacts in Spain
  • friends
  • work
    • company 3

You can not do this with categories.
As such, it is not a duplicate of bug#75711 which asks for categories.

Outlook allows for address books organized in this directory-tree structure, as the bug reporter noted. By way of example, here is the hierarchical address book structure of Vanderbilt University Medical Center as displayed in Outlook: http://archive.is/aqtpM

> image: nested directory-tree structure in MS-Outlook

I noticed the change sometime in the last 19 years since the first post of the referring thread:

Bug 40301
Support nested mailing lists for Address Book ("list within a list", add/create inside, within another containing email list)

However, the image in the latest attachment shows a different popup menu structure than the one I see in the address book. In the address book, when I right-click on a list folder I get this popup:

Properties
New Contact
New list
Delete

It looks nothing like the popup in your attachment, which includes "add to favorites" and a number of other options in the right-click popup. In fact, I can't bring up the popup you show, no matter what I try to do in the address book.

This is for Thunderbird 52.8.0 (32-bit), Windows 7 Home "Premium" platform.

Gotta tell ya, after 19 years I'm more grateful to still be alive than to have nested mailing List folders !!!

Have a good one my friend

Hi. Welcome back.
Are you asking why the attachment "nested directory-tree structure in MS-Outlook" looks different than Thunderbird ?

> I noticed the change

what change ?

No, I just didn't realize that the image was taken from Outlook. I thought it was intended as a demonstration of subfolder neting in Thunderbird.

My mistake.

Guess even after nearly 20 years, I expected everyone to know what I was suggesting. Presumption on my part.

The "change" was the successful implementation of subfolder nesting of address lists in Thunderbird. 20 years ago that wasn't supported. A request to implement this feature was the orginal post in the referring thread. Sometime since then, the capability was added. That was the change.

Sorry for the confusion, all on my part.
