Too often I send an email using the wrong identity.  For many years I have wished that the compose window gave more cues about the current identity - the From dropdown isn't enough.  For instance, color could be used: the background color of the From dropdown, a light tint in the to/attachment area, etc.

Would the fix of bug 200872 be enough here? I don't know what would the best way here or even if we need a more visible indicator.

perhaps 200872 (and perhaps other reported bugs) would solve most people's issues.  However, hard to say about jkavery - the report doesn't give example use cases for "Too often I send an email using the wrong identity."

But another question is, where is the product/UI and the use/functionality of identities headed?

I've found https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/account-colors/ to work quite well. 

Further, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/flexible-identity/ -- with no need of colors.

There is also https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/bordercolors-gt/
