User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.0 (20070326)
My 4 IMAP search folders, with names starting in "? ", all disappeared
a few seconds after I upgraded Thunderbird from version 1.5 to 2.0.0
and started up the new version.
In ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/default/*/ImapMail/SERVER/
they were still there (e.g. "? DNS.msf");
I also found new directories created like "%3F%20DNS.sbd"
and old directories like "?%20DNS.sbd".
The search folders reappeared after I renamed the "?*.msf" files to "%3F*.msf"
and restarted Thunderbird. Too bad the names were displayed by Thunderbird as
"%3F%20DNS" instead of the original, at least they worked.
I have not found documentation on restrictions in folder names, but I had no trouble creating a local message folder named "?test" and a search folder named "? test".
Reproducible: Didn't try

Similar to Bug 314688 "Saved Search folder with a Japanese name changes its name or disappears after restarts" (2005)

On 1.5 imap search folders had some problems which were fixed in bug 302470 (maybe other bugs too). I assume this happens to cause problems for existing search folders with non-ascii chars.
Does it work for you if you now create a new saved search with the ?-name? At least it works fine for me on linux.

This is similar issue to Bug 379101 when upgrade, due to design change on file name for mail folder.
