When entering a new bug, I notice that as I type into this very textarea, Mozilla's CPU usage skyrockets, and that of Xsun follows quickly. The text is VERY slow appearing in the text box. I'm running the 2.6 nightly on Solaris 8 SPARC. I note that as I type, the slight shadow on the 'bookmarkable template' button below is dancing about as well, so that might be the actual culprit, and perhaps is a duplicate of the other "dancing layout" filed bugs.
you're running the 2.6 nightly? what build is that 02/06? build IDs look like 2000080408
Sorry, forgot that little bit. I was running whatever the very latest nightly was on the day I filed this (Thursday?), although I noticed it today (2000/08/04), on the latest nightly, while typing into the URL bar - I was easily able to out-type the URL bar's ability to update, and noticed my CPU usage maxing while doing so. I also forgot to reference what kind of machine this was. Its an SS20, at 75 MHz, using the onboard SX framebuffer.
I'm still seeing this in build ID 2000080910. It also affects all text fields, no just textareas, as it turns out (although the larger text boxes do make it worse). It makes it rather difficult to file bugs, since in the large whiteboard area of the bug filing page, the browser only displays about one character per second.

This might be a dupe of 43914, although I'm seeing it on single-line text areas, instead of big textboxes like it mentions
assigning to mjudge to take an initial look to see what's up. Setting as perf keyword and m19

If not a dupe of bug 43914, could it be a dupe of bug 47395? I'm trying to consolidate performance bugs related to typing...
Open a page with a textarea on it with NT's task manager's CPU graph visible. Just holding down the shift key makes my 700 Mhz computer use 16% of it's CPU!!! In Nav and IE, it's next to nil.
nominating for nsbeta3. Performance on a PIII-450 (FreeBSD) is so bad that I can get half a sentence or more ahead of it when entering bug updates (and i'm not a super-fast typist). 'asdfkjl;' takes about 3 seconds to fully appear. CPU gets pegged when typing in a textarea box. I also get lots of "window moved to offscreen positions" as I type (bug 48230). FreeBSD fresh pull/build 09/01/2000

Set to all/all (os/platform). Certainly happens on FreeBSD and Linux and Solaris. Appears to be due to frequent reflows (on each character)
OS: Solaris → All
Hardware: Sun → All

perf work, slotted for m19

Upping severity to major since it makes Mozilla barely usable; hopefully it'll get addressed as soon as M18 is out.
