How are Firefox accomplishing this?
Let's start investigating.

I've made a preliminary list of things to test:
1. Startup/shutdown (bug 462862)
2. Folder operations (particularly open and search)
3. Addressbook search
4. Bulk message operations
5. Complex message rendering
