The start page http://google.com/firefox (actually http://google.ca/firefox for me) states:
"You're not on the latest version of Firefox. Upgrade today to get the best of the Web!"
When I click on the upgrade today link I'm taken to the Firefox download page that states:
"Good news! Your Firefox is up to date."
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/?WT.mc_id=s17
I have Firefox 8.0.1 (latest) installed. Can we please correct this issue on the Google landing page?
Note that at least one user has submitted a SUMO question about this issue https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/904298

It would be good to ask them how many page views they are seeing, as everyone on > 3.6 should on the about:home version

Here's a link to a support query that was provided in the support link above about this issue with 136 support hits.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/search?q=google%20maintained&sortby=1&w=2&a=1
FWIW, I think the specific user in the original support post had http://www.google.com/firefox set as their homepage after updating from 3.6.

I can confirm this problem for http://www.google.es/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:es-ES:official
A lot of users have the old home page.

BTW, the "out-of-date" snippet link points to http://www.mozilla.com/?WT.mc_id=s18 which offers me the Android version to download and at the bottom the desktop one.

Update: kev is checking with our contacts at Google to see if they can do any browser version sniffing in order to make sure the right people see the right messages.

This was resolved in Bug 744055 but the change is not live on production.

This bug has not been resolved. This bug pertains to the Google-hosted page at google.com/firefox. The fix for this is to get Google to redirect the page to our new start page. I will update the subject accordingly.

Can we put something in product or in an add-on hotfix that detects if a user has google.com/firefox set as their homepage and, if so, automatically change their homepage to the Mozilla hosted homepage?
cc: Alex to comment on the possibility of using an add-on hotfix here.

If Google will not redirect this to the Mozilla-hosted version, we also at least should get them to make this snippet only appear on browsers/OSes that actually can update, e.g. not on Tiger or PPC (and not on the current release, but that's something we possibly could address with a hotfix and/or code).

Yes, we certainly could. I think that's a good idea. We should track that in a separate bug, though.

Bug 762966 filed to track updating the page in product.

With the fix for bug 762966 landing I'm going to assert that this bug can be resolved as well as we have a solution for getting people off of google.com/firefox. Yes, bug 762966 does not catch every case but it should catch enough to make further effort to update the Google page unnecessary...and, anyone left pointing to that page should be on an older version of Firefox, which means the out-of-date message is actually correct.
