This would allow the user to set up a folder on his IMAP account for storing mail and news filters, and sync them with locally stored filters. It would be very useful in some situations to be able to keep the same filters no matter where you connect from. The IMAP APPEND command could be used for storing the filters on the IMAP server.
Marking NEW.

Could this enhancement request be expanded to allow the address book and other mail/news preferences to be stored on the IMAP server or should that be entered as a seperate RFE?
That would be a separate RFE.

Is there anyone who is already working on that ??? its really annoying, filters are working very well, but changing computers, (Laptop, Ws[1-10] ) and always have to rewrite the filters makes the concept of Imap a little bit unusable for ppl with a lot of Mail Traffic.

a)How is this bug related to bug 79525: Support Sieve? b)Does it include storing the filters that are used for virtual folders?
See my comments at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160523 http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html says: BASE includes a full version of the HSQL database engine, storing data in XML files. Is it possible to use HSQL to create an XML based junk mail filter that you can store on IMAP?

As a possibly simply starting point, there is a nice piece of integration done by the "Nostalgy" add-on (http://alain.frisch.fr/soft_mozilla.html) which does two things: 1) From the preferences dialog, it allows you to send a formatted e-mail with the Nostalgy Rules in it. 2) When viewing such an e-mail, you can import the rules from that e-mail using a button that appears in the e-mail information area. I've attached two screenshots that show this. This would probably be a relatively simply and effective mechanism to start with...

xref bug 337330 and RFC 5464 for a possible implementation. Reading RFC 5466 leads me to believe that it's designed more for saved searches instead of filters.
Severity: normal → S3
