This bug is for tracking 0.9.4 release notes changes and additions.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
bug 59108: The scrollbar in the Preferences dialog sometimes does not appear
--especially if you have several parent categories expanded. Workaround:
collapse some parent categories in order to view the other ones.
Can someone please move the bit on junkbuster not working to somewhere very
prominant, preferable in bold, red, blinking text. (alright, blinking may be a
bit extreme, but only because text-decoration: blink is broken)

This is bug 38488, and it a bug in junkbuster which is very frequently reported.
From bug 88205 &
news://news.mozilla.org:119/3911204b.0108100836.320ace60@posting.google.com ,

Solaris 8 users will require at least the following patches from
http://sunsolve.sun.com/ to be installed to run Mozilla:
109147-09
108434-02
108435-02

From bug 79918,
If experiencing problems with JDK 1.3 plugin on linux, users will need to either
upgrade to the JDK 1.3.1 plugin or add the following lines to the beginning of
their mozilla script:
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL

In the main release notes under "System Requirements", we should explicitly list
which libraries/packages that we depend upon rather than just a distribution
that the build is known to work on. People have been known to modify their
distributions and then file bugs on us when Mozilla no longer works
"out-of-the-box" on their distribution. A list of distributions that provide
these runtime libraries may not be a bad idea but we should definitely make sure
the focus is on our dependencies and not a specific distribution.

The packages that we require to be installed on Linux are:
Glibc 2.1 (or higher/compatible)
XFree86 3.3.x runtime libraries
GTK 1.2.x runtime libraries
Glib 1.2.x runtime libraries
Libstdc++ 2.9.0 runtime libraries

Bug 92955
It is now possible to disable the JavaScript window.open() method during page
load and unload events. The dom.disable_open_during_load pref controls this
feature. With the pref set to "true", window.open will not open an new window,
and return null, if called during an onload or onunload event, from top level
script, or as part of a setTimeout or setInterval script.
bug 96647 - changing the way output is constructed in transformiix
has been moved out to 0.9.5

So several major bugs in the XSLT will still be there
bugs 53030, 53944, 59912, 88198, 94921

all of these items have been added to the 0.9.4 release notes. marking fixed.

Resolution: --- → FIXED
The past several Release Notes (0.9.3, 0.9.2, etc) have ended with a footnote
mentioning that BugDay in #mozillazine "is on Tuesdays".

However, BugDay is now on Wednesdays, and I just wanted to ensure that was noted
correctly in the 0.9.4 Release Notes :).
http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=1935
noted
More release note items:

1)
Mozilla allows you to set an arbitrary file as your bookmarks file, although
there is no UI for this feature yet. While Mozilla is not running, edit the
prefs.js file in your profile directory, and add a line like this:
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file", "file:///path/to/bookmark.htm");

Note that if you have an alternate bookmarks file set up in Netscape 4, this
will not be picked up automatically by Mozilla, because sharing the file between
the two browsers can cause problems.

2)
The Windows-only Quick Launch feature (-turbo) is enabled by default in this
release for installer builds, although you can turn it off in the installer. We
are hoping community members will test this feature for us. The performance
increase is not as great as it used to be; however, Quick Launch now works with
multiple profiles.

Gerv
added gerv's items.
bug 92248 should also be mentioned:
causing images on websites to flicker as well as the mozilla nav buttons.
Reopening; it took me five queries to find this.

Oops - I just did an update, but didn't unclude 92248. We'll have to catch that
in the next round? Dawn?

Gerv
asa and i agree that 92248 should not be release noted.
Java release notes is not consistent in the release notes, the first time
(search for npoji600.dll), it's mentioned:
"After the JRE is installed on your machine, copy NPJava130_01.dll,
NPJava130_01a.dll, NPJava130_01b.dll, NPJava130_01c.dll, and NPOJI600.dll from"

The second time:
"On Windows:
Copy the NPOJI600.DLL from C:\JDK*\jre\bin to "\plugins" directory"

The "right" way is the second (minimal) way, wfm for months now and others on
#mozillazine.

I'll open another bug to support "officially" JRE 1.3.1 instead of 1.3.0_01, as
it's been stable for months for me.
The release notes are talking about "Netscape Communicator" in the Security section:

For security reasons, netscape communicator does not allow connections to
certain ports. To override this on a per-port basis, add a comma-separated list
of ports to default/all.js (in your mozilla installation directory). For
example, to unblock ports 1, 3, and 7, set the following pref (instructions here):

pref("network.security.ports.banned.override", "1,3,7");

Note that this cannot be done on a per profile basis - it must be done for the
entire Netscape installation.

This should probably be changed to "Mozilla" (or removed entirely if this is
Netscape-only code?).
bug 88287: If you're unable to remove user-defined helper applications try the
following:

1. open prefs dialog, go to helper apps panel.
2. select the helper app/mimetype you wish to remove from the list, and click
the Remove button.
3. click OK to confirm.
4. click OK to dismiss prefs dialog.
5. quit and restart the application.
6. reopen the prefs dialog and go to that panel. *if* the item is *still*
listed, repeat steps 2-5 --and remember to do nothing else. that should
definitely remove the item.

bug 93173: Helper app decision isn't remembered, using Open for non-OS-defined
types. If you encounter this:

1. open the prefs dialog, go to the helper apps panel.
2. click the Reset button.
3. click OK to dismiss the prefs dialog.
bug 93173, redux: the workaround to avoiding the save as dialog [when it's not
expected]:

1. quit and restart the app. you might dump core when quitting, though.
2. open the prefs dialog and go to the helper apps pref panel.
3. click the Reset button, then dismissed the prefs dialog.
For the mail filters section:
Various bugs including bug 47120, 97530, 98391. Will apply to some users'
conditions even though the bugs are fixed on the trunk, condition will not
automagically be corrected. Suggested workaround provided.

General description: filters disabling apparently randomly. This may be due to
a filter destination folder path problem, possibly caused by renaming a folder
in the past. This will not correct itself. Workaround: suggest user edits
filter(s) which is disabling so as to reselect the folder from the folder picker
and reset path in filters file.

Suggested wording:
"If you have a filter which is set to move a message to another folder and it
disables itself, this may be due to problems where filters cannot locate the
destination folder. One possible cause of this could be renamed or deleted
folders at some point since the filter's creation. Even though some of these
problems have been fixed, older filters will not automatically correct
themselves. Workaround: Go to Edit|Message Filters, select the problem filter
and Edit. Then select the destination folder again from the folder picker inside
the filters dialog, confirm OK to the changes."
Plugins:
bug 93895 :Mac only: File menu items can only be used once for full-page plugins
(like PDF) While a pdf is open in the browser window, menu items work only once.
Workaround is to go BACK in history to another page (non pdf) and then access
menu items.
Bug 94645
LDAP directory with ldif extention appeared after migration

1. Add a couple of Directory servers in 4.x
2. Do a clean installation of N6.2
3. Migrate the profile
4. Launch Address Book from N6.2

Actual result: infospace.ldif, netcenter.ldif, verisign.ldif and those user
created directory servers with ldif extention appear in the Address Book pane
/AddressB window
Expected result: 1. x.ldif should not appear in AddressBook window

Revision for low disk space portion of mail/news known problems (various bugs):
Netscape does not warn the user of a low disk space condition. Some symptoms
you may see are:

    * Send Page fails to send the intended page attachment. REMOVE - FIXED, bug
57902
    * New messages sent may be incomplete (blank body or subject). REMOVE - FIXED
    * Copying a message to your Sent folder fails entirely or may place
incomplete copy in Sent folder. REVISION - bug 102030
    * POP: Status text indicates there are new messages to retrieve, but no new
messages appear in the Inbox. Quit Netscape, free some disk space, re-start
Netscape, and try again. KEEP -- still exists.
    * IMAP: Status text indicates there are new messages to retrieve, but no new
messages appear in the Inbox. Quit Netscape, free some disk space, re-start
Netscape, and try again. KEEP -- still exists.
per laurel@netscape.com:

Remove the Search Messages sentence below from mail/news known problems.
Search criteria is now working except in a couple extreme cases when switching
the Search UI from server to server (not worth release noting).

"Not all of the choices offered in the Search Messages window are implemented or
valid for certain mail folder or newsgroup selections."
bug 82487: (All platforms) When starting Netscape 6.2, if you only have one
profile, both of the Offline preferences for startup mode ("Ask me if I want
online or offline mode", or "Use my previous online/offline state") do not work.
Netscape 6.2 will always start in online mode. To go offline, from the File
menu, choose Work Offline.
Include:
If you have problems using the Java plugin 1.3.0 with Mozilla on the Linux 2.4
kernel, like with Red Hat 7.1, you can either:

* Update the JRE to at least version from Sun
* Set the enviornment variable: LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

See bug 84093 for more details.

Remove:
OSX: The Plugin Downloader Plugin is now included with Netscape 6.2
Bug 102584. Sometimes when typing into the search view of the Subscribe dialog
for news, you get multiple hits of the same newsgroup. Subscribing to either
one, or both, results in the same effect; normal subscription. Mac OS X only.
Attached file offline notes
Forgot one thing.

For Offline:
The Problem with 'startup mode not remembering previous mode'
 is bug 82487.
Please include the bug listed below in the release notes.
Bug 99898: New Mail Notification Sound Doesn't Play with Non-Default Sound Chosen
Problem description: When the user edit the pref.js file to inculde a non
default sound, we don't play that sound when the mail arrives. Also changing it
back again to default breaks the initial default sound for that profile.
Workaround: Not to change the pref.js file to edit to play any other sound and
leave the default.
Bug 85227: Biff does not work on the 2nd account.
Problem description: When you have multiple accouts in a profile and have biff
checking for messages every N minutes. We check only the first account. Even
when you have saved the password for the all the accounts.
Workaround: Select the inbox on each account in the profile and click on get
message for the first time you launch the profile. This will make biff work for
all the accounts within the same session. If you exit the application you have
to manually check each account with get message button and onwards biff works.
Bug 80296: Get all messages checks on the default or selected account only
Problem description: When you have multiple accounts Get all messages menu item
or the drop down from the tool bar does get new message for all accounts.
Workaround: Manually click Get msg button for each account the first time. Get
all New messages will work for all accounts in that session.
Bug 80784
For the HTML section of developer release notes:

"Back to top" anchor links require a related target or they will not work,
unlike in Netscape 4.x. Specifically, a page that has <a href="#top"> needs to
have <a name="top"> at the top of the page, or the link will be dead.
LDAP:

Bug 79509: browser may temporary hang during LDAP autocomplete if network
connectivity is broken. Specifically, if the LDAP server in question is
unreachable (network connectivity problems, including taking a laptop outside a
firewall), the entire app will hang when attempting to contact that browser. If
the user is patient, the app will begin responding again after the TCP timeout
happens, probably between 30 seconds and several minutes later.

As per cmanske@netscape.com:

Bug 97663
"Workaround is to not use the "Every Time" setting for the cache pref."
Bug 82122: (All Platforms) The Mail&Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box does
not display correctly at lower monitor resolutions such as 800 by 600 or 640 by
480. If possible, increase your monitor's display resolution above 800 by 600.
Bug 88295: Can not get print page on WinME-Ja.

N6.2 doesn't work on HP LaserJet 5Si/5Si MX PS printer driver on WinME on some
this type of printer, in this case, you should change the driver to HP LaserJet
5Si/MX, then will work fine.

per sairuh@netscape.com
Bug 96972

Linux: Middle-mouse clicking in areas without links may lead to alerts popping up.
Bug 105141: Read news messages appear unread in next session. Workaround: wait
at least 5 minutes after reading last news articly before exiting.
Printing:
---------

Animated GIFS will print out black. Bug 101618

Banner or top graphic is being printed on first page.
and rest of the content is being printed on sucessive pages. Bug 105166

Transparent background/GIF are printed as black(Mac and Linux only). Bug 12037

chosing As Laid out on the screen for frames results in just one truncated page
printed out. Bug 102641

Print Preview not hooked up. Bug 103890

[a bit more clarification]

Bug 96972 [unix-only]: When you middle-click in a region, the browser will
attempt to load whatever's in your clipboard, such as a URL. However, you might
encounter alerts popping up if the contents in your clipboard were something
other than a URL.
bug 102956 [win32-only]: in the download progress dialog, if you use the
spacebar to activate the Close button after a download has completed, your
downloaded file will be deleted. instead, use the mouse to *click* the Close
button to avoid this dataloss.
For Composer - Bug 97633:
If the cache preference is set to "Every time I view the page", when I
create a new composer document, the caret is missing and all of the icons are
disabled on the toolbar. The editor appears completely broken (can't
quit/change prefs/etc.)
This is in the Advanced > Cache panel in prefs.
Workaround: Use any other option except "Every time I view the page"

Composer/Mail Compose:
---------------------

Parts of Mail composition / Composer window left blank after deleting text Bug
97674

Workaround is to minimize and maximize window
*For Netscape Messaging IMAP:
Bug 14295:
UI: Account Settings, Server Panel, username & Server Name not editable.

Bug 18266:
Shoudl query IMAP folders other than INBOX for new msgs

*IMAP Mark as deleted mode:
Bug 59694:
Use "Delete" button & "Undo" to toggle "mark as delete" messages in the thread
pane

*IMAP Interoperability bug:
UW IMAP bug 90734:
Migrated UW IMAP UI: New Folder Dialog is not displaying completely for the
FIRST time

Cyrus IMAP bug 27002: "Permission denied" alert displays when sending msg from
Cyrus.
When sending msgs from Cyrus IMAP mail account, you will get "The current
command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Permission denied".
Workaround will be: need to redefine the special folder (sent, draft, template)
under the Inbox folder, then it will work without these alerts.
Applets:
-------

An error message is shown when loading applets on Mac 9.1, this bug is specific to
mac. bug 106347
Two new issues have been discovered:
When the browser is in FIPS mode,
bug 106526 will cause the browser to crash when visiting SSL2 sites.
bug 106587 will cause the browser to fail to connect to SSL3 sites.

FIPS mode is only used by some Government agencies. Normal users would never
run into this bugs. The workaround provided is a two step configuration of the
browser which preserves all of the FIPS mode functionality while eliminating the
problems encountered in the above two bugs.

The workaround is:
1) Users which use FIPS mode must explicitly disable the SSL2 protocol.
To disable the SSL2 protocol use edit->preferences->privacy&security->SSL
2) Users which use FIPS mode must have a master password set.
To set a master password use edit->preferences->privacy&security->Master
Password->change password. If the password was not set the change master
password dialog will tell you so, and you can set it. If the password was set
and you do not which to change it you can cancel the dialog.

For Netscape 6.2...

MacOS:
"If you have a dual-processor G4 running Mac OSX, Netscape will stall. There
are no problems with dual-processor G4's running MacOS 9."

Some of these issues were fixed, so you should check the bug number you have for
this comment.

Proxies:
"Netscape only accepts hostnames for manual proxies. If you migrate a
Communicator 4 profile, you will need to change the settings manually.

The real problem was some people had URL's for manual proxies (http://proxy),
rather than just a hostname. NS6 will not grab the hostname out of the URL for
manual proxy prefs. Can we modify the text a bit, it sort of sounds like
migration of all manual proxy prefs needs to be done by hand, which is not true.
"Several features of Page Information are not yet available, including: the File
MIME Type, Source, Local cache file, Content length, Expires, Charset, and
Security. Also, you cannot view information on frames, XML pages, or FTP pages.

I haven't seen any FTP bugs on this feature, but it looks like the feature
displays something, I'm not sure if it's correct or not...

New submissions:
63048 - file: URLs will not display a "file not found error."

66194 - file: URLs should have 3 slashes for local files (e.g. file:///etc/hosts)
and 5 slahes for UNC paths for files shared in Windows SMB (e.g.
file://///SERVER/directory/filename).

84472 - When FTP encounters a server type it does not support, a dialog with the
ftp system information will appear (e.g. "VMS Multinet").

57763 - "send e-mail address as anonymous ftp passwd" doesn't work

Please see bug, there is sample text + some discussion about what would be the
best final text.

100816 - FTP does not error if the hostname does not exist in DNS.

I don't directly work on PAC (proxy auto config) anymore, but it is probably
still working 75%, it would be really nice if the broken functions were
documented as well..

Lastly: could we add a section specificlly for networking? There seems to be a
big block of networking notes in the "Navigator" section, just under "In
prefences for proxies..."
Benjamin, your latest release notes bugs were added quite late (one week after
the Oct 19 deadline) and have no explanatory text. I will try my best to get
them in by release, but if not, they will appear shortly after.
Sorry about the delay. My testing was backed up. You might prefer to only update
the NS 6.2 release notes. I am planning to have a timely submission to 0.9.6
relnotes, and the mozilla users are familiar with most of what was mentioned.
No problem Ben, the latest 6.2 release notes online should have the information
you've noted here.
Closing this tracking bug as fixed.
