The problem I am having is that when I open an email and reply and switch back to INBOX the message now shows as UnRead and I have to either mark as read manually or open it again and close. However if I reply on that email again it will again mark as UnRead in the INBOX. I have uninstalled Thunderbird and all reminent folders/files and clean install with same isse. I have also installed Thunderbird on a laptop that never had Thunderbird and same issue. I have installed MailBird and it does not happen there. This also does not happen on WebMail or on my iOS device (iPhone 6s Plus or iPad 2), this appears to be specific to Thunderbird. If helpful I can create a test email account so it can be Actual results: When I reply to any email the original shows as UnRead Expected results: Should be marked as read after replying to that email
OS: Unspecified → Windows 8.1
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
As of today that not only does the original message get marked as unread, but a copy of the sent message is placed into the drafts folder.
I can create a test email account for testing this issue if anyone would be interested in helping with this issue. I hate to leave TB and use something else. I did install eM Client today and that is working fine, just don't care for the UX. Any help would be much appreciated..
this is a gmail account? I see to recall there were issues a few months back

I can confirm the same issue, and we too are using Godaddy IMAP account. The difference between myself and mozbug1223, is that I've been using Thunderbird for years. This issue I believe just started cropping up a couple of months ago. I hadn't thought too much about it, but my boss, whom I recently converted over from Outlook, started reporting the same issue too. Thunderbird 45.3.0 (release update channel) Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 I've tested the following: _ Install TB on different machine. _ Create new profile. _ Test to see if this happens in Outlook, and mobile email apps. _ Test Thunderbird with Yahoo and Gmail accounts. The bad behavior doesn't exist with these. _ Tested TB in safe mode. _ Compacted all folders. _ Tested a couple of different "read after reply" addon's. None worked. _ Tested preview mode vs open in new tab/window _ Tested turning off "copy message to sent folder" _ Tested connection security: SSL/TLS vs none _ Tested TB (45.0.2)on Linux desktop, this has the same behavior with unread after reply.

Thank you for this excellent detail. So you didn't see this in the version of Thunderbird you were using in say April, May or June?

Wayne, I can't recall this happening longer than 2 months ago. Thunderbird for me has just worked since I migrated from Outlook. This is becoming a big issue here at the office with some of the others that I have converted over. I do wish we could find a fix. Godaddy is aware of the issue too, although I'm not so certain as to how much effort they'll put in changing anything. This behavior doesn't exist in Outlook, and they told me they only support Exchange through Office 365.
I did some more testing, and found that this "unread after reply" issue is happening in SeaMonkey also. I also tested it out again using Outlook (on Windows PC) and TypeApp (on Android phone). The issue did not appear on either of these after replying.
Godaddy had an issue a few months ago Bug 1260724 - TB 38 will not download new messages from GoDaddy via IMAP
Summary: Thunderbird Marks Message as UnRead after Reply → Read message is marked as Unread after Reply for godaddy account
Whiteboard: [closeme 2016-09-15]
I spoke with Advanced Tech Support at Godaddy, and they have re-synched all of our accounts on their servers. 3 days later, and the problem still exists. I then took a spare laptop, deleted any previous TB profiles, and uninstalled Thunderbird. Then downloaded and installed the latest release, Thunderbird 45.4.0. I created a new profile using Profile Manager, then deleted the default. I thought for sure that with a new install, new profile, and a resync of the server that it'd work - but it didn't. I'm still getting messages marked as unread after replying to them.
FURTHER TESTING I was thinking that maybe the issue exists, primarily because of the size of our IMAP accounts, containing 1000's of emails each, so I just created a new "test" email account using IMAP on Godaddy. The new email account I just created has a total of 3 emails in all folders. Testing this account, I'm still getting the same behaviour as before ; STATUS CHANGES TO UNREAD AFTER REPLY. I'm guessing this indicates that the size of the email account must not be a factor. Test Machine: Windows 7 Professional Thunderbird 45.4.0
Hello, I also have this issue for a while now. Please find 3 behaviors that may help. TEST 1 steps::: setup: open both Thunderbird AND Godaddy online mail page (to see same emails on both sides). 1- on TB: I reply to an email that is marked read (on both TB and Online Godaddy) 2- after reply::: TB incorrectly marks it as UNREAD with the reply arrow; Online Godaddy correctly mark it READ also with reply arrow 3- on TB: I now mark manually the erroneous UNREAD email as READ (by clicking on the email or by manually marking it READ) THEN the status changes from UNREAD TO READ but the reply arrow DISAPPEARS; Online Godaddy as expected keeps it READ and keeps its reply arrow 4- on TB: I now mark manually the erroneous READ email as UNREAD then TB correctly marks as UNREAD but still no reply arrow; Online Godaddy NOW put it as UNREAD and still with reply arrow It means that even though TB put an erroneous UNREAD on replies, it is only local as GoDaddy on its side does NOT tag it as UNREAD and does the correct behavior on its side. On Godaddy server online email, the replied email never shows the erroneous UNREAD. TEST 2 on online godaddy side ::: On Godaddy online email, reply to an email using the online Godaddy email page: 1- Online page shows correctly email as READ with the reply arrow; TB shows incorrectly by changing its status from READ to UNREAD and NOT showing the reply arrow. 2- Then still on online page: I now mark the email as READ; TB stays the same, that is, still shows it as UNREAD with no reply arrow 3- Then still on online page: I now mark the email as UNREAD; TB stays the same, that is, still shows it as UNREAD with no reply arrow So here replying and modifying read status only on the online page shows that TB is blocked to its erroneous state. TEST 3: 1- email reply on TB: TB shows UNREAD with reply arrow; online page shows READ with reply arrow 2- on Godaddy online page, now change email to UNREAD; no change on TB (UNREAD with arrow) 3- on Godaddy online page, now change email to READ; no change on TB (UNREAD with arrow) 4- clicking on TB email changes UNREAD with arrow to READ with NO arrow. I hope it helps. Thank you so much for looking into this!
Hi guys, was a resolution found for this? I've just transferred over to Thunderbird and was about to move several others over too next week but discovered this issue in my testing over the weekend. Our issues are the same as those noted above. Windows 10, Go Daddy Account any emails we reply to create multiple drafts in the draft folder and once we click reply, the drafts and the original email in the inbox all become UNREAD. Is there any additional info/ reports I can generate to assist in developing a solution?
> This also does not happen on WebMail or on my iOS device (iPhone 6s Plus or iPad 2), this appears to be specific to Thunderbird. WebMail : Following is known. Thunderbird : \Seen flag is "per mail identity", so \Seen is held for each mail. Gmail IMAP Web : Show mails as conversation. If one mail has Unread state, Gmail shows Conversation as Unread. In this case, user complaints that I changed a mail to Read, but mail is Unread at WebMail. Mailer of Smart Phone. Does mailer of Smart Phone store "Replied state of replied mail(Replied flag or something)"? If stored, does mailer of Smart Phone immediately access imap server after storing flag? IIUC, mailer of iOS/Android device usually doesn't do server access so freequently in order not to waste valuable/expensive packets. However, because Thundserbird is mailer on PC where connection with server is usually always established, Thunderbird accesses server just after storing/removing \Seen flag etc. When my Android device, flag state change by other client is usually not immediately reflected at mailer of Android. Default setting was "check new mails of recent 30 days only, every 15 minutes" in mailer of my Android device. This kind of difference may affect on observed external phenomenon. Please always say "your problem was caused by bug of Thunderbird" with sufficuient data(evidence).
To all problem reporters in this bug: In IMAP, Read/Unread is as follows. Unread status of a mail == \Seen flag is not stored in the mail Read status of a mail == \Seen flag is stored in the mail And, the \Seen flag can be stored/removed by any of Thunderbird, other client who shares this IMAP account, and, needless to say, by server. This bug was opened at bugzilla.mozilla.org for Mailnews Core. i.e. All of you claim that your problem was actually caused by Thunderbird. What is evidence of it? When reply mail to a replied mail is sent, following is done by Thunderbird. 1. Send reply mail(pass mail data to SMTP server), save(append) copy of mail to Sent if requestd by Copies&Folder setting 2. Store flag for "Replied" state to replied mail. Mail is in Inbox in many cases. At step 2, (a) Thunderbird may remove \Seen flag at same time. (b) Server may remove \Seen flag because new imap flag was stored to the mail(==mail is updated==not seen yet). (c) Someone who shares mbox may change status of mail from Read to Unread. Your claim is that (b) and (c) never occurred and (a) surely occurred, because this bug was opened at bugzilla.mozilla.org instead of reported to ISP. See User Story of bug 402793 and get imap log(NSPR log) and check log content using Text Editor by yourself, please. If \Seen is removed by Thunderbird, "uid store -Flags(\Seen ...)" should be logged. Because many activities with imap server occur concurrently, get imap log with minimum configuration with minimum activity. New profile with relevant imap account only defined, no new mail check, no auto-sync, no Global Indexer, ... Try imap:4 instead of imap:5, because log volume may be reduced. A known similar phenomenon caused by special behavior of server. 1. Server returns a mail with UID=A initially. 2. After a while, virus scan etc. ends, then server replaces mail by new UID=B(remove A, add B). 3. Because mail content is absolutely same except some added/removed/altered message headers or its content, user can't distinguish "mail of UID=A" and "mail of UID=B". In this case, if UID=A is changed to Read by user just before UID=B is added, report by user is usually following. Thunderbird changed mail status from Read to Unread! Show "Order Received" column, because column value is UID in Thunderbird when IMAP folder, please.
WADA, I don't think anyone here is directly blaming Thunderbird for the issue, but we're not dismissing it either. The issue we're having is either with Thunderbird, or it's with GoDaddy, or a combination of the two together. We just want both parties to look into this and come up with a solution. I can easily say that the combination DOES have issues. When I'm using TB with my GoDaddy email, I have this issue regardless if it's on a Windows machine, or on a Linux system. I have used a test machine and installed Thunderbird (which had never been installed before on that system), then created a new email account with Godaddy, and then setup that new acct in Thunderbird. So with a brand new profile, on a new system, I still experienced the aggravating "reply/unread" issue. Results of other testing I did are as follows: _ Godaddy email works fine under Outlook, without the "reply then change state to unread" issue. _ In Thunderbird, Gmail and Yahoo email work fine. Godaddy email has the "reply then change state to unread" issue. _ my Android email client (TypeApp) works fine with Godaddy email. No issue when replying. I will shoot Godaddy a link to this forum and maybe they can do some further testing. If someone on this forum would like the settings for the test email account, I can provide those to you for further testing. Those of us here searching for an answer are not condemning or criticizing Thunderbird, we're just looking to make it a better experience for ourselves and the people that we share this program with.
WADA, I ran a NSPR log per your request, testing IMAP:4 and SMTP:4. My test in Thunderbird included sending a message from my Yahoo account to my Godaddy account. I then replied to the Yahoo message (receiving an unread status afterwards). Once my Yahoo account received the reply, I shut Thunderbird down and opened the log file. I was not able to locate any "-Flags". Only +Flags were present in the log file. I'd copy the log file here, but there are over 147,000 lines of information for essentially about a 2-minute or less test.
I would like to add that this issue also occurs when using RackSpace email hosting. Same behavior, messages lose their state and are suddenly marked as unread (losing any reply/forward markings as well). I've reached out to RS and have engaged their support, but the issue is prevalent across multiple machines, account sizes, and actual back-end accounts.
I too have had this issue for as long as I can remember. Also GoDaddy. Exist in the latest version of Thunderbird at the time I posted this message. It is very frustrating issue. Please resolve this issue.

Update from Parish "Yes, I still have this issue. I just tested it to be certain. I believe it to be a GoDaddy issue though."
