User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/117.0
Steps to reproduce:
Upgraded from version 102.15.0 to 115.2.3
Actual results:
Even though I get a new mail indicator on the highest tier parent folder, I don't get a new mail indicator on an intermediate tier subfolder (directly below the parent folder) for new messages placed below that in a lower tier subfolder. With a complex folder structure using two to three subfolder levels and including dozens of parent-intermediate tier folders, I frequently can't find new messages. This was not an issue with the older version.
Expected results:
No change from the previous version.

This bug is intermittent. Sometimes the new message indicators work properly, other times not.

That link isn't me. By the way, I really dislike the Thunderbird version 115.2.3 user interface and have already changed back to version 102.15.1. I was able to do that since I have a recent backup of my profile copied prior to the version 115.2.3 upgrade and also have a saved copy of Thunderbird Setup 102.5.0.exe.
In my opinion, as a retired electrical engineer who has done a great deal of "old school" computer programming for large power generating plant control systems which had to be ultra reliable, I'm constantly fighting with updated, so-called "improved" application software which completely misses the mark as far as the user experience is concerned and is full of significant bugs. This is true for major product manufacturers like Microsoft and most everyone else. Now, it seems, Firefox and Thunderbird are in that camp also.

I've reported this for prior versions, I suspect subsequently fixed. Noticed again in T-bird 115.3.1 (32-bit) on Win10. New mail total number in T-bird System Tray icon appears correct. New mail indication in folders pane often absent from parent folders until expanded. Makes finding mail in my folders inconvenient. See attached screenshots.

Screenshots depict that new email indications are absent from folders pane until parent subfolders are expanded.

The attached image documents a workaround to locate new email that is unmarked in the graphic folder display. Before stumbling onto this workaround I had to manually expand all sub-folders, both tedious and unreliable because I have many sub-folders.

Roger,

Wayne, I'm sorry but I don't know how to download and install 121.0b4 (or any other updates for that matter). Is there a Help document somewhere?
Thanks.
