Details

(Whiteboard: closeme 2010-11-04)

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20051022 Firefox/1.5
Build Identifier: version 1.5 (20051022)

If I save a .eml file from TB and then close TB, and then open the saved .eml file i get a *alert* popup saying "c is not a registered protocol" and I need to click ok.
This don't happen if tb is running and i open the saved .eml file. It's only happens when tb is closed and i open the saved .eml file

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.save a .eml file to disk
2.close thunderbird
3.open the save .eml file

Actual Results:
you get a alert popup saying "c is not a registered protocol" that you need to click away

Expected Results:
No Alert popup, it should just open the .eml file
This only occure to the branch built.
If using Trunk it works just like it should
How do you open the .eml file?
Version: unspecified → Trunk
I open the .EML file by just d-click on it. Like any file in the windows os.
Have also tried to r-click and select open with: Thunderbird = same result.

And as I stated in earlier comments that this only happen to the Branch, and not the Trunk.
Ok. I just did a clean instll of windows xp sp2 english.
On a 3rd machine.
Formated hdd. used a windows xp pro OEM Service pack 2.

Nothing changed on OS, only logged in and installed a clean (new)Thunderbird Branch version 1.5 (20051103) and saved a msg as .eml.

D-clicked on the saved file and a popup, poped up only to say
"c is not a registered protocol"

I'm seeing this also... followed by a TBird crash. I tried sending an incident report but it fails to connect.

Version: Trunk → 1.5
I see this also, if TB is closed when I double-click the file. Apparently the path is being parsed as a URL -- see bug 316177 comment 5.

Seeing it with 1.5RC2, Win2K.

I see this bug a bit differently. Instead of trying to open in Thunderbird, the .eml opens in Outlook Express, even though I have Thunderbird as my default e-mail client.
Two things here:

First, This bug appears to be fixed, at least in the recent 1.6a1 nightly builds.

Second

This is because even though Thunderbird is your default email client for mailto: protocol and possibly other purposes, the .eml file extension is still associated with OE. You can address this via Tools->Folder Options...->File Types from any folder (Windows Explorer) window.

This is WFM with TB 3a1-0309 and but not in 2a1-0304.

Bug still active in TB 1.5 (2001201) which I downloaded last week.
If open .eml from another computer from the local network - there is no pop-up window with this error message. The bug appears only if trying to open local .eml file.
Present in version 1.5.0.7 (20060909) on WinXP.

Retesting with 2b1-1026, and this problem is no longer present there.
Also still not present on trunk (3a1-1031).
this has not been corrected and happens allways on november 06.

this has not been corrected and happens allways on november 06.

Note : beside the error ('c is not a registered protocol') popup, TB opens 2 more windows :
- the correct one containing the email, ok.
- one with the main TB application, that I feel is not necessary : when I click on a saved mail, I want to open the mail, not TB

Are you making this claim on for trunk or branch? (That is, 3a1 or 2b1?)

My comment 17 is incorrect; I see the problem with 2b1-1111, I think I forgot to close the program before double-clicking the file.

With 3a1-1031, however, I don't see the problem.

With 3a1, only the message window opens.

This bug will not block 1.8.0.anything. Don't change flags until you know what you're doing.

for the public release !
- version 1.5.0.8 (20061025) -
I can still reproduce this bug for the new released version 1.5.0.8 .
in 1.5.0.9 as well
This bug is not marked as fixed on the trunk or any branches; so there's no need for repeated proclamations, with every release, that you can still reproduce the bug.
Moving off bugs that didn't make the deadline for Thunderbird 2.

Since this was taken off from blocking a 2.0 version, can we get Bugzilla to add a blocking 3.0 flag?

Can't mark this blocking.

Can anyone reproduce this on Thunderbird 3.1 or later?

Cannot duplicate in Thunderbird 3.1.4 on Windows 7 Professional. Double-clicking the eml file opens it correctly in a Thunderbird window as I would expect.
WFM with TB 3.1.5 on Win XP.
