is this IMAP or local folder trash? Is this a new profile, or does it happen after the first time?

howdy y'all,
[1] my tbird info ...
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060516 Thunderbird/1.5.0.4 - Build ID: 2006051612
[2] this happens to me _very_ occasionally with the trash folder in my local-folders account. i rt-clk/empty-trash and the trash folder SOMETIMES vanishes. i have never looked to see if the actual file on the drive disappears. will try to do that next time it happens.
i compact folders several times a day.
i delete all my MSF files once every week or so.
this has never happened to me in any other account.

I have the exact same problem; it happens every time I empty the Trash folder.
I am using Thunderbird version 1.5.0.4 (20060516), with the NASA Normal 0.7.7.1 theme, and extensions: Talkback 1.5.0.4; Lightning 0.1, build 2006031011); and nasa_normal-0.7.7.1-fx+tb.
Let me know when a patch has been created. Thanks!

This also happens to me everytime I empty the trash. I've had this bug with since I first installed and upto the latest update (1.5.0.7) This is on my home PC running windows 2k sp4, and it is the trash folder under my local folders ONly that gets deleted. On startup, it appears to be re-created automatically. But if I get email that is routed to the trash folder after it is deleted (before re-starting Thunderbird) I get error messages and the email itself is no where to be found. I do not have this problem at work, but there I am using a separate location for my mail than the default "Local Folders". Could this be solely related to local folders?

I just had the same thing happen on 1.5.0.10. Better still, when the Trash folder was re-created on startup all of the "Trashed" messages were still there! The Trash did not get emptied. This occurred on the Local Folders Trash.

Yes, It happened to me. I did a little testing too. If the folder is already empty nothing happens (the folder stays). I was so dismayed with this still happening in V2, that I have now finally made the move to no longer using Local Folders anymore. That fixed it for me!

I'm using tbird v2 (version 2.0.0.0 (20070326) specifically) and I still have the same problem, but only intermittently. I use the File->Empty Trash menu item and occasionally this deletes the Trash icon and I can no longer delete any messages. When I restart, the Trash icon reappears as do the messages. I did not try not using Local Folders. I'm on WinXP Pro SP2.
Hi everyone,
I'm using TBird 2.0 and I've got this problem mostly since the 2.0.0.4 update.. I didn't got any problem with first 2.0.0.0 release, during the few weeks I used it (I've changed from MS Office Outlook to TBird with Lightning not so long ago).. When the trash is "gone", no delete functionality runs...
And, also exactly as Steve (comment #8), the problem seems not to be everytime : most of the times are with some spam that are treated as junk and automatically placed into the trash, using automatic rules. So, I can't tell anything about some contents which could crash down the trash.
I also use WinXP SP2 and Local Folders, but I use the trash context-menu (right-click on trash item in the folder list) to empty trash.
If it can help, my extensions in use are (all are up to date) :
- Adblock Plus
- CuteMenus Crystal SVG
- Dictionary MySpell (French)
- Lightning
- Magic SLR
- Password Exporter
- Talkback
The theme in use is TBird's default one.

I have the same problem too. Sometimes (quite often) the trash folder disappears when I "Mark Folder Read". When I restart Thunderbird, I get it back.
Windows 2000 (sp4)
Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 (also on previous versions since 2.0.0.0; don't think it was there before 2.0.0.0)
Extensions: Enigmail 0.95.1, Display Mail User Agent Extension 1.3.2, header scroll extension 0.3.2

Could it be possible that there could be problems with antivirus integration ? A few days after my post (comment #9), I updated once my antivirus database (Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0.0.299) and since that I don't have any trash problem, though I keep receive the same kind and same quatity of spams..
My last antivirus database update : 06/20/2007, 2:55pm GMT
My previous one : 06/11/2007, 10:53pm GMT
I got problems between those two database upgrades.
I don't remember if I made extension upgrades in this period of time, but since I did not. I've just upgraded Lightning as I write this post....
Now, I will perform some upgrades : antivirus database and some TBird extensions (Lightning, in fact, as TBird extension module tells me) and see what will happen in the next days.
(and I'm still sorry for my english which is always a bit bad...)

This is not unprecedented - see bug 99766 - but it could have been fixed and regressed.
All, Was there a time when you did NOT see the problem?
Steve, you said your problem is not with local. Is it imap or pop where you see the problem?

I suspect this has to do with the summary file for the Trash folder being out of date or invalid for whatever reason. I saw some strange things happening when I deleted Trash.msf, restarted, clicked on the trash folder, and while it was regenerating the .msf file, picked empty trash. That deleted the Trash folder on disk, though it left it in the UI with a bogus count, and I had to restart before the counts would go back to 0 (selecting the Trash folder did nothing, because the Trash file on disk was gone)

I too have the Trash folder disappearing when Right-Click - Empty Trash. (version 2.0.0.9 (20071031)) Restart Thunderbird and the Trash folder returns, together with all its trash contents.
My Trash does NOT have a Trash.msf.
I am able to select all files in the trash folder, right-click and delete them, and they do disappear. However, Trash still has a size of 700K! After several folder selections, returning to select Trash causes the 'deleted' messages to reappear.
I have tried closing Thunderbird, deleting all .msf files, restarting Thunderbird and allowing it to recreate the .msf. I have manually compacted Trash and a .msf is created, but the problem remains.
There are a number of bug reports for this, and not a single fix in sight. One of the bug reports has been set to Resolved simply because no-one added further comments (including a fix!).

This problem still exists in Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, and it seems to be worse with larger trash folders - my wife has a terrible habit of letting literally THOUSANDS of messages sit in her trash folder before emptying it. Then, when she does, it disappears almost every time. I, on the other hand, clear mine out daily, and see some or all of my trash folders disappear once or twice a week.
This is on two different computers running two different virus scanners (AVG and Avast!, Re: Comment #11). Some of the running extensions are common between the two computers, but not all of them. Her computer is running:
Display Mail User Agent 1.5.4
Mnenhy 0.7.5.666
Nested Quote Remover 0.8.1
Quote Colors 0.2.8
Remember Mismatched Domains 1.4.6
Signature Switch 1.6.1
Talkback 2.0.0.9
Xpunge 0.2.3
I'm running all of those and a couple others. Not all of these extensions were installed when we first noticed the problem, and I haven't done any troubleshooting by disabling extensions because the problem is intermittent - if I disable the extensions and it works, did it just happen to work, or was the extension at fault? There's no way to know.
The only other possibly relevant info - both of us migrated to Thunderbird 2.0.0.x from Eudora 4.3.2 in December 2007.

I am using Thunderbird version 2.0.0.16. Every time I use the function empty trash, my trash icon disappears. I have to shut down Thunderbird in order for it to reappear. I initially noticed this when I went back to read my email and started deleting emails and they wouldn't go to the trash. It was then I noticed that my trash icon was gone. Is this a bug or is it just a normal function for this program?

I see the same problem on my Windows/XP system but not on my Mac (10.5.2). This problem is not entirely repeatable. Happens only when right clicking on the Trash folder and selecting "Empty Trash". As a result, I've been manually emptying the trash by selecting all emails and deleting them as a group using the delete key.

perhaps this should be duped to bug 277909

> Do you (all) see this when using beta 2?
Just ran into this for the very first time with
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.1pre) Gecko/20090708 Lightning/1.0pre Thunderbird/3.0b3pre
(built from c-c 5bb1a26308ab)
After the trash folder has disappeared, collapsing and expanding the folder tree shows *two* trash folders. To 'repair' this, one has to restart Thunderbird or delete a message and empty trash from its context menu again.
The output of 'ls -l' shows nothing unusual, 'Trash' and 'Trash.msf' exist all the time, 'Trash' has size zero after emptying trash as it should.
The bug 277909 seems to describe the same issue IMHO.

I have just seen a similar problem on french forums at http://www.geckozone.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=85885 with Thunderbird 3.1.2.
Deleting the file Trash (without extension) as indicated at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=3214441#p3214441 fix the problem.

If you see this, please supply an imap protocol log https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging

I'd think the original conditions no long exist, where reporter got "folder already exists by that name."

Aren't we talking about local trash folders, not imap folders?
Comment 30•14 years ago

According to bug 596794 comment #0, "Empty Trash" of local trash folder currently deletes Trash folder and recreates it. It produces phenomenon of bug 596794 comment #0.
Phenomena reported to this bug sounds folder pane refresh issue after "delete local Trash" and "recreate local Trash".
If "folder pane refresh issue" only, next should repair it.
At context menu of an account/folder, "Open" => new Tb window is opened.
Then close old Tb window.
To bug opener and all problem reporters:
Do you still see problem of this bug with current Tb 3.1.7 or later?
No Trash after Empty Trash
Bogus mail count after Empty Trash
Double Trash after Empty Trash and collapse/expand of account
If yes, with which folder pane view? "All Folders" view? Or other view?
If yes, can "new Tb window by Open at context menu" be recovery procedure?

|
||
To bug opener and all problem reporters:
If you are talking about "Empty Trash" of local trash folder at "Unified Folders" view in Tb 3.1("Smart Folders" in Tb 3.0), comment at bug 618595 instead of this bug, please.
