Build Identifier: 2.0.0.16
Mailing list had worked forever, but just yesterday started giving this error when I try to send to a mailing list that has been in use for many months.
This necessitates building a manual list of all the addresses - about a dozen - as bcc's.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Create new message
2.type in mailing list name (it autofills
3.Hit send.
Actual Results:
The error message appears and I cannot send the message without enterring all the addresses manually as bcc's.
Expected Results:
Send the message as always in the past.

I have also found this same bug on Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (20080914), on Mac OS X 10.5.
It flags the error message: 'Mailing list <"Mailing list"> is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail.'
It appears that TB wrongly identifies the mailing list as a single card.
I have checked all the entries on the list and they are valid e-mail addresses.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 on win2k SP4 french.
Three months ago, on a computer of my company, I renamed the mailng list with blabla.yopyop@myxxxanyweb.com, it worked.
Now, on another computer, this trick doesn't work.

address book for example.
CC2 FONCT*, CC2 INVEST*, CC2 RECETTES* have the problem.
But I don't think it's the address book.

Not sure if there is a link.
Today, a problem appeared but not the same : the e-mail was sent with the name of mailing list CC2 INVEST@finances.gov.pf and the mailer daemon said that there is no mailbox CC2INVEST@finances.gov.pf.
And when opening the address book by clicking on the icon, there was only 2 addresses.
Maybe the program associated with the address book didn't work correctly.

I had a look at the address book, but it doesn't have the list which gave the error in the screenshot.
I attempted to reproduce this locally by creating a new mailing list and following the STR. It WFM on Linux 2.0.0.17pre 20080924.
I have not tested via the address book in comment 6, though.

Ooops, sorry.
I forgot to say that the screenshot in comment #5 was taken three months ago.
Because this bug is difficult to reproduce. I don't have a new screenshot.
In this screenshot, an user tried to send a mail to people which are in mailing list "infosante". The bug appeared.
I though it was finished when I renamed the mailing list to something like blabla.yopyop@myxxxanyweb.com, as I wrote in comment #4.
In comment Comment #6, actually, with an other user, the same bug appears when using the mailing list "CC2 FONCT@finances.gov.pf" or "CC2 INVEST@finances.gov.pf" or "CC2 RECETTES@finances.gov.pf".

In compose mail, opening contacts search.
Search for Mailing list
Add to To

If you do the same a second time :
Mailing list is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host.
You need to restart thunderbird.

Hello,
For me it is the other way around: it has always worked until now I've got the Thunderbird 2.0.0.19. I use the french version of Thunderbird as well with Windows. And when I try to put a list as recipients, it gives an error as it is not of the form user@host. Please note that I have always used exactly the same list in all the previous versions of Thunderbird with no problem.

Thunderbird version 2.0.0.22 (20090605) does not seem to have this problem. I can type in the alias of a list and send! So far, so good!
Question - MS updates disabled my ability to send email via Thunderbird from within a Word document! MS p* me off so much! The dialog box says there is no default mail client, please set Outlet as mail client. However, I HAVE set Thunderbird as default mail client from within IE (which I rarely use). Any ideas?

It is an unreliably reproducible bug, and, since pretty much the only fixes on release branches are security or stability fixes, it's unlikely that there was a change which fixed your problem.

Please see bug 499958, which has had an impressive amount of duplicates in such a short time.

I've got the same problem in version 2.0.0.23, although only on one computer that has this version installed, it works without a problem on a different machine with the same version, IMAP account, extensions and address book & lists.
I tried un- and reinstalling Thunderbird, didnt work.
Then, I created an new profile and connected to the same IMAP Account, importing and using the same address book and now sending to the same lists works without a problem.

Version 3.0.4 had same problem from the moment of installation. Occurs in safe mode as well. None of my previous versions had the problem.

I can't confirm without any of STRs provided by this issue and his dupes.
_david [at] king-usa_ can you provide to us a clear STR to reproduce this issue, please?

I have not had this problem with recent iterations of Thunderbird. Version 3.1.7 does not produce this problem. Good work!

This bug has reappeared after the update from Thunderbird v31.0 to v31.1.0 in the Mac-Version (OS X 10.9).
It is not present in Earlybird 33.0a2.
Actual workaround: open Address Book, mark the list and click "Write".
Should I enter a new bug report?

Bug has reappeared in Thunderbird v32.

Bug has appeared in 31.1.0 on Windows XP.
Workaround in comment 31: open Address Book, mark the list and click "Write", does not allow you to write the list as BCC in the address field. all the TO's have to be changed manually to BCC.
Comment 35•10 years ago
|

The workaround does not allow you to write more than one list into the same letter.

This bug is a real pain. How do I get back to the version prior to 31.1.10?

Do your list names contain spaces?
Example: if a list is named "List Friends" rename it "List_Friends".
Or rename "List 1" to "List_1", ... etc.
In a compose window choose "Bcc", then type "list" in the address field and choose e.g. "List_Friends" in the auto-complete drop-down.
You no longer will get the error message when sending.

I just encountered the same bug. It tells me that my group email, "Excuses-Lions <"Excuse notification">" is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail. Help!!!!!!!

You're seeing bug 1060901. (A workaround is to remove the list description, or make it one word only.)
Comment 40•10 years ago

Another workaround: open the address book, select the list and hit Write.
