User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008111217 Fedora/3.0.4-1.fc9 Firefox/3.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2pre) Gecko/20081117 Shredder/3.0b1pre

In my Fedora 9/Gnome system with multiple virtual desktops:
a) notice of update appears in the panel; I click it
b) window informing of update appears, probably with text chrome/en-US.jar:4368 and buttons :4423 and :4425
c) I click the button captioned "Restart Shredder"
d) I move to virtual desktop 11, where I keep thunderbird/shredder active
e) I note that shredder's window is correctly gone.
f) I expect that within, say, 10s a new shredder window will appear, as it's done for months now, except for the past few days
g) No such new window appears.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Observe box that says a Shredder update is received and offers two buttons
2. Click the button that says "Restart Shredder"
3. Observe that the existing Shredder goes away and no new Shredder window appears
4. Manually restart Shredder by clicking the button you have previously given the proper command, e.g., ~/src/cmd/thunderbird/thunderbird/thunderbird
5. Observe that Shredder now starts normally.
Actual Results:
Shredder does not restart upon clicking the button marked "Restart Shredder"

Expected Results:
Shredder should restart upon clicking the button marked "Restart Shredder"

Environment is Fedora 9, automatically kept up-to-date.
I have noticed this failure-to-restart problem the last several days (the last several updates). Before that time, Shredder automatically restarted.

Perhaps the box and buttons are those shown around chrome/en-US.jar:4368, finishedBackground.more.
Yes, seeing this on Winxp also for the last few updates.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Happens not only after an update but also after installing an add-on. Shredder simply doesn't re-start by itself.
Forgot: Win XP SP2, so platform should be 'all'.
This works for me going from nightly of the 18th to today's nightly (19th).
Bingo - I probably have seen this. I have not done addons or updates. But I have the restart addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4847 and several times in the past few days the restart did not work - I just thought the addon stopped working.

I would have been using mostly 20081116. I think it consistently failed, but I can't say it was 100%. I'm not able to reproduce now using 20081116 nor 20081119, but I have another machine to try.

I'm not finding any toolkit or FF trunk bugs created in last 6 days that mention restart problem like this.
Who has Gloda turned on?

I can reproduce restart failure consistently on my XP machine with 20081116. But with today's build 20081119032441 it crashes. So Bug 465579 - gloda frequently hangs on shutdown when indexing - or some other gloda bug may be related. (Andrew doesn't give a stack in Bug 465579)

Summary: 'Restart Shredder' fails after update notice → 'Restart Shredder' fails after update notice due to shutdown problem
regression range for my restart addon not working is 2008-11-07 - 2008-11-08 (works - 20081108031842 fails) - so perhaps my restart problem isn't gloda. And the crash may be unrelated to restart failing.

This is related to gloda shutdown - bug 465579, which is marked blocking b1. Unclear to me if bug 459376 helps.

I can reproduce the addon+restart issue on XP. On both XP and Vista I can always reproduce restart not working when gloda is on, and can't when it is turned off. Which makes this a regression of bug 463602.

Confirming that the restart after update, works normally with gloda preffed off.
I saw the problem consistently with it turned on.
Updated to Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2pre) Gecko/20081119 Lightning/1.0pre Shredder/3.0b1pre ID:20081119032441
from yesterdays build.

I don't think this needs to block beta1. Having to start thunderbird manually after the update isn't that bad considering beta testers will do it once, and have the problem only if they turned on gloda.
