User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:105.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/105.0

Steps to reproduce:

selected an email with an attachment in the main window,
right cliqued and selected "show in discussion view" (might not be exactly this, I'm translating from the French version)
in the discussion view, right clicked on the attachment (bottom left) and chose "detach"

Actual results:

file saving window opens, I can save the file.
But when coming back to the discussion tab, the attachment is not underlined, and right-clicking still gives the menu point for detaching
when going back to the main view, the email appears twice, once with and once without the attachment

Expected results:

after detaching an attachment in the discussion view, the attachment should be underlined to indicate that is has been detached and the right click menu should be adjusted. And the email should not appear twice in the main window.
I have tested this in a Windows 10 system with 32 bit TB 102.3.3 (32 bits). I had the same problem with the 102.3.2 version.

Summary: detaching files in discussion view does not result in the attachment marked as detached → detaching files in view as list view: the attachment marked as detached, the email appears twice, once with and once without the attachment

If this issue is only for IMAP messages, it could be a dupe of Bug 1089452

I confirm that this in only happening in IMAP folders. I have tried in local folder (detaching an attachment from the discussions view) and it works as it should.
But then the problem I have observed is not quite the same as in Bug 1089452 where the attachments do not delete.
In this bug here, the attachments do detach, but the folder will then contain two instances of the email, one with the attachment and a second one without.

Confirming for 102.4.2 (64-bit), IMAP (gmail), Win10.

  • Looks like the original message on which detaching is performed doesn't change at all in the conversation view.
  • A duplicate message with detached attachment then appeared in Gmail's All Mail folder of the conversation view (only), and in the 3-pane inbox.
  • Attempting Open message in Conversation on the original message then triggers an error:
Couldn't find a collection for msg: [xpconnect wrapped nsIMsgDBHdr] ConversationOpener.jsm:44
        onQueryCompleted resource:///modules/ConversationOpener.jsm:44
        _onQueryCompleted resource:///modules/gloda/Collection.jsm:681
        onQueryCompleted resource:///modules/gloda/GlodaDatastore.jsm:168
        handleCompletion resource:///modules/gloda/GlodaDatastore.jsm:449

  • Open message in Conversation on the duplicate (where detaching occured) works correctly, interestingly again showing only one message in Inbox and the other one in All Mail, but this time both messages have no attachment (as opposed to the actual inbox, where there's one with and one without).
  • Doesn't happen on POP (gmx).

Duplicate of this bug: 1799145

I can confirm that bug 1799145 is a very similar problem as the bug here. And it is a serious problem : the use of virtual search folders is quite limited IMHO if one is not able to delete or detach email.
It seems that this is a long running problem : bug 1089452 was submitted 9 years ago, has been submitted several times and blocks other bugs :

TB brings out regularly new versions, with many enhancements, I know that all of this is based on more or less voluntary work, but it is difficult to understand why fundamental problems such as this one do not get resolved, but more superficial ones such as additional field in address books bug 1774765 are given attention to rapidly
Cheers

PS : this does not limit my enjoyment of working with TB every day, especially using the Nostalgy extension ;-)

bug 1818765 seems to be a similar problem

This sounds like the problem I have. As I posted on the Thunderbird Beta forum several days ago,

'I've found various posts about duplicate emails appearing but nothing that quite fits my experience. I'm using Thunderbird 118.0b6 and IMAP mail servers. When I receive an attachment in an email I usually detach it from the email and save it separately. I've been doing this for years. For the last few weeks every time I remove an attachment a duplicate of the original email is immediately downloaded with the same attachment. If I ignore it or delete this duplicate nothing else happens. If I remove the attachment from the duplicate, I get a second duplicate.'

There are some replies on the forum from people who see the same thing, sometimes with earlier version of Thunderbird Beta. One poster asked does it happen with OAUTH IMAP accounts like GMail, or also with normal password IMAP accounts. I am using a PrivateEmail account which I think is 'normal password' but I am not certain. Is this the bug already reported or is it new?

There have been updates to Thunderbird since I last raised this but the problem remains the same:

I receive an email with an attachment. I detach it. A few moments later I have a second copy of the email in my inbox. One copy has the attachment and the other does not. I can delete the redundant copy with the attachment. If instead I detach the document from the second copy of the email, a third copy of the email and its attachment appears. It seems this might go on for as long as I keep detaching the documents.

It may be of interest that when the first duplicate email appears, although both copies of the email have an identical date and time, the copy with the attachment is positioned as though it was sent before the copy where the attachment has been removed, or to put it another way, as though when I try to detach the document it is not removed from the original email and instead a new copy without the attachment is downloaded. Also, the original copy of the email that is selected so I can right-click and detach the document remains selected and still has the attachment, while the duplicate copy that newly appears next to it in the inbox is not selected and does not have the attachment.
