howdy y'all, well, i disagree as to _where_ this should be done. account settings is the wrong place. i think it's better - and far more obvious to users - in the current location in options. just add the ability to set the alerts by msg _type_. that the is the concept and the option should be treated that way. tools/options/general/when-new-messages-arrive ----- show an alert - play a sound --all______[]______________[] email______[]______________[] -news______[]______________[] -rss_______[]______________[] this would seem both obvious AND easy to find. since one may have multiple email accounts, having this type of setting in two places is ... confusing. take care, lee
I think people with multiple email addresses are more likely to not only be savvy enough to reailse that they have to repeat their notification settings for each address, but they'll also appreciate the ability to make some accounts more important than others. Here's some examples: I'd like to be notified when somebody emails me at my help address, but I don't care as much about all the spam that's sent to my admin address. We've got RSS feeds for each of the forums on our site. I'd like to be notified when somebody posts in the Support forum, but I don't care as much about the General Chatter forum (I really don't need to be notified each time they add one more word to their story board). Lots of people have RSS feeds for important things like automated builds, or things they're very interested in, like their friends blogs, but they *certainly* don't want to be notified every time there's a Slashnet post. I don't have a problem with defaults for each message type (that already seems to be happening, based on the fact that I never get RSS notifications), but there certainly needs to be a way to pick and choose which folders will notify you.

I like the idea of specifying notifications by account. At the very least, a method to control the notification sound for RSS feeds is badly needed. Having the notification sound off everytime that a feed article comes over is very annoying.
howdy y'all, [1] bug title change request that the bug title be changed from ... "new messages options should be on a per account basis" ... to ... "new message alerts should be on a per account basis" note singular "message" and change form "options" to "alerts". 2nd version seems far more accurate that the 1st one. [2] per account alerts on this, i still _somewhat disagree. is there a reason for NOT putting access to the alert controls in one place? yes, the controls are useful in each account, i concede that. why not allow - perhaps in addition to in account settings - a control in the main options panel? a list of accounts & the alert controls per each seems doable and non-confusing. my main problem with putting the controls _only_ in account settings is the exceedingly awkward way one must switch back-n-forth when hunting for settings that are spread between tools/account-settings & tools/options. i want "one dialog to rule them all" when it comes to settings & options/prefs, but that is another bug/rfe. take care, lee

Hi, I am actually surprised that this enhancement request has only been posted so recently since the insufficient alert configurability is the reason why i still use mulberry (which is not developed any more). At least this bug is the only one i found concerned the alert configurability. Mulberry does not even support RSS, but the problem lies within the fact that i collect multiple email accounts in one single imap account - also mailing lists. The filtering is done through server based filtering (sieve in my case). Therefore i have some folders with important content and some folders with mailings lists and hence not so important content. There is simply no way no accept that thunderbird always pops up with a new mail alert each time a mail is new in a mailing list folder. Mulberry on the other hand has a cabinet concept. Cabinets are like custom categories. Each folder from the imap account can be dragged into a cabinet and for the cabinet all kind of nice alert configurations can be done, e.g. no alerts for mailings, popup windows for important folder etc. in addition, other cabinet based configurations are smtp sender, signature etc. Just disabling the check new mail option for the mailing list folders is not an option too since i still want to see when new mails arrive and how many of them. Basically i just wanted to drop in that there is really demand for more sophisticated alert configurability (even if it was just a folder based alert configurability) and simply account based or message based alert configurability is just not enough for many imap people.
I have some things to add to this 1) On thunderbird 1.0.7-1.1.fc4 (20050929) my email notification sound only plays if no messages are currently marked unread - I want to intentionally leave some messages marked unread (flagging them for attention later) and I want it to always play when any new message is received - not if a new message is received _and_ all other messages are already marked read. 2) Per-folder alerts - i have a lot of message filters if I could setup a notification only for messages that get sorted to a specific folder (and it's children, inheritability would be optional - but i would want it) a specific alert sound is played That way I can configure one sound for emails that I know are coming from actual human beings i need to pay attention to (based off me filtering their messages into folders bearing their name) and a different one for my notifications from my servers on application errors, etc.

that would solve #2, but #1 is the bigger annoyance - beacuse i wanted to hear a notification whenever i got new mail - not just when new mail arrived and no messages were marked as unread before that

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.0.2) Gecko/20060308 Thunderbird/1.5.0.2 - Build ID: 2006030803 [2] alert trigger if i understand how that works, you need to file a new bug/rfe for it. i THINK that it works by detecting the state of the new message biff. if you have not done anything to reset the biffstate, then you will NOT get a new msg alert. for instance, i just sent two emails to myself - one immediate and one delayed five minutes. i then hit "get msgs" and got the 1st one. it triggered the mew msg alert, popped up the mail biff in the system tray - as expected. i LEFT TBIRD ALONE - not responding to the alert - and waited for the delayed msg to arrive. when it did the new msg alert DID NOT TRIGGER. the biff was still sitting in the system tray and the msg shows in the inbox, but no alert action was taken. again, i think your best bet is either file a new bug/rfe for that specific situation OR push on the sound-as-a-filter-action bug/rfe referred to earlier. take care, lee

That would solve this issue for messages that are moved to folders via client-side filters -- you'd simply add another action to the filter -- but not for IMAP accounts with server-side filtering. Benjamin: It's been a while since I've tested this, and my IMAP account is defunct at the moment, but: isn't there a setting to mark a folder as Checked or Unchecked, maybe in the Folder Properties? My notes show that a new message arriving in an Unchecked folder won't trigger an alert; and if you have IDLE turned off (in the advanced IMAP server settings) the folder won't even go bold or show an unread message account until you click it. Well, it's unfortunate that you're confused, but that's how it goes. There are too many options that are account- or identity-specific *not* to put them in an account- or identity-specific UI. Example: the junk controls originally were set in a single window with a dropdown at the top to pick the account. *This* was confusing, because some of those options were global, not account-specific. With a recent fix, the global settings are in Options, and the account-specific ones are in the Account settings: not confusing. I think it would be a good idea for certain option groups (e.g. Mail Composition) to have text indicating that some related settings may be set per-account or per-identity, and likewise have a text (or even a button) on the account/identity-specific settings pages pointing back to the related global options. But it would be a bad idea to force them all into a single page, which seems to be your primary concern. It would be possible to merge the Account Settings *into* the Options dialog (see bug 286664). I don't much care for Scott's direction there, but if history is a guide, my dissent matters not a whit.
I'd like to put in a vote for per-folder notification settings. I have filters setup on my IMAP server, sending certain emails into separate folders. I would like to know that there are new messages in those folders, but they're not the sort of emails that I want to be notified about all the time. So I'd like to be able to right-click on the folder and say "Check this folder for new messages", but leave unticked something like "Notify me when new messages arrive in this folder". For now, I have to actually ask Thunderbird not to check that folder, which isn't my desired behaviour at all.
Sorry for an extra comment on this bug, but I actually came looking for the bug in case anyone had found an extension that does the trick, and therefore I thought people watching the bug might be interested in the "Mailbox Alert" extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/2610/ Very nicely configurable to do most of what we would want. You'll need to turn off Thunderbird's own notification, and then set the Mailbox Alert on a per-folder basis (or per account, ticking "Alert for child folders"). Just a note on Mailbox Alert. It is functional but it's not optimal. It often has a surprisingly long delay on notification. It sometimes doesn't notify you at all. It often cuts off the notification sound mid-playing. It also is more complicated to use that filtering concepts above. We already have the filtering piece in Thunderbird. It seems obvious to me that audio alerts should utilize that UI and just be extended to support this. You could do per account, per folder, per anything. You could play sounds matching on subject, on body text, on anything now there plus the others added to include the above. This is such basic functionality that I'm still shocked this isn't getting attention.
I agree with the above, except that I really do need to be able to specify different alerts for different folders/accounts. I do the filtering on the server side, because I check my email on my Treo as well (where I don't want to get the filtered emails at all), and on webmail. So while alerts linked to filters is good, it doesn't solve everything by a long shot.
I'd go behond saying you should be able to configure notifications per folder, but to the point where you can define identities per folder too - if I'm in my work folder, I want it to default to using my work email address for example.

I've now released to AMO an extension ToneQuilla that provides sounds as a custom filter action. The URL for the addon is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/9956 Information about the addon is available at http://mesquilla.com/extensions/tonequilla/ I've been using this for a few weeks now, and I'll say that customized sounds are a major improvement over the generic one-sound-for-all in the as-shipped mailnews code. The issue in this bug though is per-folder or per-account notifications. With a filter action available, per-account and per-folder can be accomplished through a filter. So I guess that the issue of whether the filter action is enough is a usability issue. So is the filter action sufficient, or should this bug be implemented (either in code or in an extension)?
In addition to ToneQuilla, mentioned in my previous comment, I've just released on AMO the extension "FiltaQuilla" which adds (among other things) a custom filter action to suppress notifications for particular emails, as partially requested by this bug. I use it, for example, to suppress all notifications from an active email list that I am subscribed to. The list of messages that occur when notifications appear (from, for example, an email that is not on this active list) still contain these suppressed messages, so this is not a complete solution. But that is really a separate bug. So the way that I am setup is that I allow the visual notifications, but suppress certain things I don't want to see using the new filter action. I then add sound notifications using ToneQuilla for classes of email that are particularly important to me (keeping the default sound notification off). It would be really nice to have the notification / sound options variable in each account setting or even better on a folder level. This seems to be a repeatedly requested feature over the years.

I'd like to put a vote for per-folder notification settings also.

My particular use case is that I have a folder where I redirect messages from lists with lots of traffic of low interest and I don't want to get notifications for those mails. So, for me a "don't send notifications for messages arriving in this folder" check button will be enough.

For feeds, per folder (at least) notifications are mandatory, by definition of what a feed is.

Maybe add the word "notifications" to the title of this bug because I could not find it as I only searched for "per account notifications"

To keep this ticket alive, because there is no activity in the past 4 years and there are quite some duplicates.

I have 15 accounts in one profile and for most of them I don't want any alert.

Thunderbird for Android has a configuration of the new mail alert per account. (And also some nice options, such as "Contacts only".)

I think that the notification option should be per folder not per account. There are many subfolders that may not require any notification
