There should be a section in Preferences to set default options for new Events.
 The options to set should include private, event lasts all day, and calendar file.

Confirming, the idea of a separate preference options section to gather new-item(event/task) dialog defaults sounds reasonable to consider.  Some of the individual defaults are covered in other bugs; making dependencies.

privacy: bug 215975
all-day: bug 191824

calendar default might be addressed by bug 266249, keeping the first calendar the default, but allowing the user to reorder the calendars.

If i knew how to fix this, i would!  There is a large community at my company that has been instructed to start using lightning which is great.  But many people now are asking about certain features not available -- this is definitely one of them.  People are really asking for default behavior to be configurable for the Privacy of events.  Just trying to confirm that there is a need for this from the customer standpoint.

I've gone weeks at a time happily creating events in shared calendars without realizing that my family could not see them because Lightning creates them as "Private" by default. (I use Google's calendars with CalDAV)

+1 for this
On android I solved same problem by using Business Calendar aplication which has tamplates, in which I set default event start time at 7:00 and no reminders.

Templates would maybe be too much for Lightning, but default for event/task starting time could be good start. :)
