During Feedback tracking of the Major Update, QA got informed about Problems with Norton360 and Firefox.

It seems that Norton360 locks for some Reasons files like the Places.sqlite file (as example after the Major Update) and so people are not able to access bookmarks, add bookmarks.

When People run into this Problem, they got a Error Message into the Error Console, but no indication from Norton360 (like a Warning, Virus Warning etc) that the file is locked, so it seems for this Users like this is a Firefox fault.

So far in QA Tests i were not able to reproduce this Problem with a new Install. Everything worked fine.

This Bug is for tracking this Problem. QA is still working on Tests and detailed steps to reproduce.

Interesting details would be:
Version Number of Norton360 were this Problem happen (so far in Tests Version 1.3.024 was fine) and the Error Message from the Error Console.

Workarounds from the Support Team are:

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Configuring+Norton+360#_Firefox_Privacy_Cleanup (thats help not in all cases) and to uninstall/reinstall Norton 360.
If there's anyone experiencing this problem, please submit answers to the following questions:

1) What antivirus software are you running, and what version?
2) Do you have the latest updates & virus patterns for your antivirus software?
3) Did the support article help?
3.1) If so, was Firefox listed under the Eavesdropping Protection?
3.2) If so, was the Firefox Privacy Cleanup button checked?
Some interesting additional information from our friends at Norton who are also looking into this:

 - with autoprotect and browser cleanup on, but eavesdropping off, upgrade worked fine
 - after turning on eavesdropping protection and opening and closing firefox, the symptoms (no bookmarks, unable to make bookmarks) were seen
 - rebooting the computer fixed it, and the problem was not seen again

Still unclear if it's closing the browser with browser cleanup on or eavesdropping protection; they continue to investigate, anyone with Norton 360 is encouraged to help us figure this out!

Configuring norton 360 according to the guideline didn't fix it.
I removed 360 and i'm bugfree since i did.
both users in bug 448145 confirmed a norton 360 issue. i'm actually marking as dependant on this, will become a dupe but there could be some useful info there.

3) Did the support article help?

Not really, Firefox was already allowed
3.1) If so, was Firefox listed under the Eavesdropping Protection?

No
3.2) If so, was the Firefox Privacy Cleanup button checked?

N/A

Firefox does appear to be working normally again. Although I have not changed any settings! I will keep monitoring, if I get any further errors / bugs on this, I will update this thread.

Running Norton 360 with Eavesdropping Protection turned on. I keep loosing History and Bookmarks when I start Firefox 3.0. I checked the FAQ and "Allowed" Firefox in the Firewall area, made sure "Privacy Cleanup" wasn't checked, but can't "Allow" under Eavesdropping Protection because it isn't listed. Works fine for a while then won't open to any homepage. It will work if you type it into the address bar. History and Bookmarks are restored when Firefox 3.0 is reinstalled. Noticed that ctfmon.exe, BackWeb-137903.exe, and iTunes.exe were blocked through Eavesdropping Protection about the same time that I lost History and Bookmarks.

1) What antivirus software are you running, and what version?
Norton 360 Ver. 2.3.1.4
2) Do you have the latest updates & virus patterns for your antivirus software?
Yes
3) Did the support article help? Solution didn’t work.

Have you used the full installer or the automated update to upgrade to Firefox 3?
Downloaded the executable for Firefox 3.0.1. File version 4.42.0.0 from Mozilla. Given the size it looks like the full installer.
Which version of Firefox you was using before?
2.0.0.16

This seems to be fixed by removing "coFFPlgn.dll" from the Components folder.
Could some people experiencing this problem verify? (Thanks to Tomcat for the

thanks. but even by shtting down all of the NOrton 360 actions within 360, then using task manager to shut down Norton, the file is still protected. do i really have to go into MSCONFIG and shut it down competely, re-boot etc ???

You want to shut down "firefox.exe" in Task Manager, not Norton. Follow the instructions on http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Bookmarks+and+toolbar+buttons+not+working+after+upgrading

If you are still experiencing this issue after successfully deleting that file, follow these steps:

1) Download listdlls from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896656.aspx
2) Extract listdlls.exe from listdlls.zip; put listdlls.exe on your Desktop
3) Go to Start...Run (or hold down the Windows key and press R)
4) type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press OK
5) You will get a command line. Type: cd Desktop
6) Press Enter/Return; the prompt will go to the next line. Type: listdlls > mozillabug.txt
7) Press Enter/Return again. A file called "mozillabug.txt" will be created on your Desktop. Attach it to this bug.
I have Norton 360 Vers 2.3.1.4 and my virus defs were last updated on September 8, 2008. I am also running Windows XP updated through SP 3 (actually beyond SP3). I also have the additional annoyance of not being able to access the navigation buttons as in the back or forward buttons. My eavesdropping has been turned off this whole time with this problem. I will read the bug rept and see if any of the suggestions are applicable to me and report back.

I dont have Firefox Running ! that is the point, it does not work so I can not use it. something is blocking me from removing the file.
OK, I have removed the file as in Comment 14. All seems OK.

One additiojnal problem is the Firefox is now running in Safe mode ! any ideas how to exit safe mode ?
Attached file Text doc from listdlls
I removed the file coffplgn.dll from the components folder of Mozilla FireFox but as a result it did return the functionality and access to my bookmarks toolbar and the bookmarks menu list themselves but as a result it sacrificed/removed my Norton 360 Identity Protection plug in that logs me into my saved log ins through the Identity Safe feature. You need to do something with Symantec/Norton to get this fixed. I like that feature and want to use it. Can you tell me if this bug also happens if Norton Internet Security 2008 is used instead of Norton 360? If it doesn't happen with that program I am willing to swap out my Norton. Please advise. Thank you. Alisa
same as Comment 26, I also liked the feature.

I have also found that clicking on a link in a mail no longer works - I now have to copy and paste links from mails into Firefox even from Bugzilla mails :-)
I am reading the updates through AOL. I wanted to test to see if I developed the same problem with not being able to use links in e-mails as the other person reported so I launched FireFox. Guess what? I am back to square one with the entire problem. I have no bookmarks either as the toolbar or through the menu, when it loads the page tab it doesn't go to the home page I have set (it is set to Google) it just loads a blank "untitled" tab. I checked to see if the file I removed put itself back but it has not. We, the users need answers to this major problem and need them quickly. This has been going on for far too long as it is. I truly don't like MSIE and prefer FF please fix this!
alisak2000, is your places.sqlite file locked in some way? You could probably install Sqlite Manager (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5817) to check if you have access to it (you have to run it from another Firefox profile).
Depends on: 414715
How do I create another profile in FireFox?
Hello,

It looks like you might be right about my places.sqlite file being locked for my default profile. I installed the sqlite add on and then ran it from a secondary profile I created and got this error message:
Error in opening file places.sqlite - perhaps this is not an sqlite db file
Exception Name: NS_ERROR_FILE_IS_LOCKED
Exception Message: Component returned failure code: 0x8052000e (NS_ERROR_FILE_IS_LOCKED) [mozIStorageService.openUnsharedDatabase]

How do I unlock this file?
Well, if the add-on is calling openUnsharedDatabase it's going to return that always anyway. The only way to unlock it is to close that instance of Firefox running that profile.
Shawn, the question is why can the places.sqlite be opened by another profile while the original hasn't access to it? So can it really be an external application which locks this file?

Alisak, do you get the same error message when opening your original profile without using the sqlite manager in another profile?
Attached file Another listdlls
Taken from Jay: http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?forumId=1&comments_parentId=155153

He reports that disabling extensions helped (currently confirming that coFFPlgn.dll wasn't deleted and getting a list of extensions)
That error was provided by the sqlite add on when I tried to access the places.sqlite file for my default profile while trying to check the default places.sqlite file from the secondary profile I created. I didn't get that error from sqlite for the places.sqlite file for the secondary profile because I didn't test that file as I don't intend to keep that profile once I get the problem fixed.

Here's something interesting I have multiple profile folders in my C:\Documents and Settings\Alisa Beth\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ path.
A folder named d14s7vhy.Profile2 (which I recognize as the new profile I created) a folder named h0mx099u.default and a third folder named k3mmls5v.default

Putting the "Profile2" folder aside and discussing the other two folders, in the folder named h0mx099u.default I have a file named simply places.sqlite and another file named places_1221114427160.sqlite I am able to access successfully the file named places_1221114427160.sqlite from the sqlite add on but not the places.sqlite - that one gives the "locked error"

For the folder named k3mmls5v.default I have a places.sqlite which I can open successfully from sqlite and a file named places_1221119690237.sqlite which also opens successfully in sqlite.

So a few questions. First long and short - what can I do to cure this? How do I unlock that profile/file? And a secondary question. Does any one have any information on whether or not this happens with Norton Internet Security also because if everything is fully functional with NIS I will uninstall Norton 360 and install NIS. Because this is just plain annoying/silly and my head is getting so turned in circles I am not certain if my name may be John Smith at this point (*note I am a girl and that was a joke). I have the normal starter set of bookmarks not my personal bookmarks in my secondary profile.
Alisa, I cannot answer your question if NIS will work. I haven't followed all the discussions in the forums.

But lets drive it forward. I have noticed that the given coFFPlgn.dll file is only copied to an official installation of Firefox. Any nightly build of Firefox 3.0.2pre and 3.1a2pre is not affected. So one major question to you Alisa. Could you please have a test with a nightly build and check if the bookmarks are present there? Remember to make a backup of your profile before or just use a fresh profile.

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2008/09/2008-09-14-05-mozilla1.9.0/firefox-3.0.3pre.en-US.win32.zip

Hi Alisa, thank you for helping us debugging the problem. Can you list the Extensions you have installed.

Also other people running into this problem, can you list the Extensions you have installed in Firefox ?
I have this problem of my bookmarks are missing and am unable to reinstall them, my home is missing when first turned on (however pressing home makes it appear) my back button does not work, and my history is missing.
However I am using Linux Mint 5.0 Elyssa with FireFox 3.0.1 and no antivirus software or fire wall (not needed in Linux), this issue is making FF unusable. :-(

Then this is not the same bug. Please file a new one with your issue.
Hello,

I think you might be asking for a list that I have already provided as an attachment but let me verify this with you. Are you referencing the "list dll" text file? If yes, I have already run it and posted it with one of my previous comments here. If not, can you please be more specific so I can provide what you are asking for. As for the Norton Internet Security (NIS) someone mentioned in their comments that it is a yes to my question, NIS does the same thing because it also has the "Identity Safe".

Interesting. Both Norton and Zone Alarm are using a toolbar to interact with the user. Probably it also places a dll file into the components directory which could block the access to places.sqlite. Anyone knows what happens if a XPCOM component has a file handle in use and Firefox itself want to access this file?

For reference the mentioned product:

> Help!!My Forward and back button disappear!!

This is bug 426026 which will be fixed in the upcoming Firefox 3.0.2.
I have installed the update that was suggested but I am concerned and confused as to why it had started launching with the name "Grand Paradiso" in the top blue window bar? It has stopped now but after I upgraded using the link provided in this bug report (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2008/09/2008-09-14-05-mozilla1.9.0/firefox-3.0.3pre.en-US.win32.zip). This has reverted to a blank profile with no bookmarks except the default. I have gone ahead and installed the FoxMarks add in that allowed me to download/sync my bookmarks that were saved on the FoxMarks server successfully. I have my bookmarks again and I will be watching to see if it lasts. The Norton Identity Safe toolbar has returned on its own and I will be waiting to see if version 3.0.1 will yield the same problem again. Also interesting to note is that my version that I was upgraded to through the link I provided for reference had upgraded me above the 3.0.1 and now I am unable to launch FF to that version any more. I have two shortcuts that I have religiously used (one on my desktop and one in my quick launch bar) that no longer trip off the "Grand Paradiso" version. Will keep updating as things progress but still wait to hear about this issue and about upcoming updates to replace this version with one that may be more stable.
Alisa, the application name change is ok. "Gran Paradiso" is the internal product name for Firefox 3.0.x development builds.

So what I can read from your last comment, using this build stops the issue for you and all your bookmarks are shown after a restart?

Have you put the contents of the zip archive into your existing Firefox installation folder? Then this was a failure. Sorry for not mentioning it. You can revert to 3.0.1 by installing Firefox 3.0.1 again. For future testing you can extract zip archives in a separate folder which can be used in parallel.
Beltzner and Carsten, I'm also able to reproduce this issue now. I've made a snapshot of the vmware image to be able to return to the state.

What is the current status of this bug? Do we still need more investigation to find a solution to fix this issue? In my case I've tried all the mentioned ways given in the support document but none of them were helpful.

I believe there were a lot of discussion outside of Bugzilla e.g. in forums. I don't follow them. So it would be great to hear what information we need to get rid of this issue.

Just some more information I can see:
* I can reproduce it with Minefield. There is no coFFPlgn.dll inside the components folder
* Loading web pages works but it never finishes loading
* Session Restore also doesn't work anymore. The browser opens blank.
* The following exceptions are thrown:

I just wanted you to know I am back to square one (where I started). I have neither my bookmarks through the menu nor my bookmarks toolbar available and when FireFox loads it refuses to go to my designated start/home page; it loads blank. This is rediculous that it would take so long to fix this problem and that the problem would relate to such large important mainstream programs as NIS and Norton 360 both of which are put out by such a reputable company as Symantec. When will there be a new version of FF issued permanently fixing the problem?
With the fix in bug 456910 the sqlite database files will not be locked exclusive anymore by Firefox. But it doesn't solve this issue because we still have zombie processes around.

(In reply to comment #54)

Alisa, there is no version available yet which will fix this issue but do following steps meanwhile: open the task manager and kill each Firefox process you can find there. Afterwards start Firefox again and it should work.

Same problem..What do you suggest..I'm not proficient enough to add or remove programs..that is unless you can walk me completely through it step by step.

1) What antivirus software are you running, and what version?
Norton 360 Ver. 2.4.0.4

2) Do you have the latest updates & virus patterns for your antivirus software?
Yes

3) Did the support article help? Not Yet

3.1) If so, was Firefox listed under the Eavesdropping Protection? No

3.2) If so, was the Firefox Privacy Cleanup button checked? No

Do you have any Extensions/Toolbars installed ?
comcast tool bar as well as the norton extension
I shut down firefox in the task manager but I could not remove coFFPlgn.dll It did allow me to load my homepage and did give me my bookmarks back. Will this fix it for good or will I have to remember this process?
I have discovered something interesting. If I don't turn on the Norton Phishing filter/detector and let FireFox's be the default then I don't get the bug happening and my FF behaves normally/correctly with the bookmarks in the menu and toolbar. Will leave it off and update FF's behavior as I go.
try different versions
I am using Norton 360 2.4.0.4. After upgrading to Firefox 3, I also freqently lost my bookmarks, history and homepage and had to restart Windows to restore them. Since making the coFFPlgn.dll a read only file, as suggested on Mozillazine, the problem now rarely occurs and can be corrected by ending the firefox.exe process in the task mananger.

Do we know if this issue has been resolved yet by Norton or Mozilla?

It should have been long ago with a update from norton i think.
It was an update from Norton that fixed it. If users are still having this issue it's because they don't have a subscription to Norton updates or have disabled them and thus can't update.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
