4 different Geckozone's users report that they cannot delete their mail messages anymore by using the delete button or the Suppr key. Moving mail message manually to the trash work. Creating a new profile solve the problem, so this seems to be due to a profile corruption. Repairing the folder or using safe-mode doesn't solve the problem. They are all using a POP account. I would like to heard any idea helping to identifying and solve this issue.
Is there any file that could be attached to the bug report in order to help understand the cause of this issue? Users report that there are no messages in the error console.

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #3) > this is also reported in gsfn Could you tag these topics with this bug number, in order to find them easily?
This sounds like a regression can we get a regression window ?
The bug starts with TB14 release.
please add regression* when regression suspected :)
do you (In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #7) > please add regression* when regression suspected :) do you mean that I should add "regression14" because the bug start with tb14?
I was referring to keywords regression and regressionwindow-wanted. but if regression bug is not known, it doesnt hurt to explicitly note regression version whiteboard whiteboard, IMO

Seems that this problem could be cause by the disappearance of the "trash" file (without extension) in the profile folder. Copying the "draft" file and rename it "trash" seems to solve the issue. More details (in French) in the Geckozone's thread.
This is what a user affected by this problem see in its profile folder! Is there any explanation? See: http://www.geckozone.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=108738&p=708726#p708703

Vincent do their anti virus logs show any activity around the time the problem commenced. While it has not been a problem for some time, there have been occasions in the past where anti virus programs simply delete or quarantine whole files because they do not like one of the emails it contains. Another possible cause is some sort of disk clean up / Optimization tool. Locating the file called trash and deleting it to recover disk space.
Reported today on GS https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/cannot_delete_emails_possible_resolution Started having problems deleting and then the trash folder disappeared. Solution stop carbonite backing up the trash folder. I think what we are starting to see are some of the cracks that appear when really large files are transferred over relatively slow connections. Thunderbird does not know anything about file locking or network shares as far as I can figure it. Now people routinely backup to Carbonite, iCloud and a multitude of other cloud and network devices on a streaming basis. More and more of the support issues are related to streaming/real time backups/ file contention. How difficult would it be for Thunderbird to seek a sharing lock on the whole profile from the file system when it starts? Or at least on MBOX files

I was redirected here from bug #913365 by alta88, although I'm not sure it's the same bug. Thanks to his suggestion, however, I found out that when my problem occurs (cannot delete a feed article), the Trash folder of the "Feed" account is missing. If I restart Thunderbird, the Trash folder comes back and I can delete feed articles correctly. I can't understand why/when it disappears, although it seems to be something like 50% of the times. No problems at all with any other mail (POP/IMAP) or newsgroup account, just the Feed account shows this problem.
Additional information for my case. The symptom (missing trash folder for the RSS feeds => unable to delete feed articles) happens on every other launch of Thunderbird. I mean: - I start Thunderbird: no problem - I restart Thunderbird: problem happens - I restart Thunderbird: no problem - I restart Thunderbird: problem happens ... and so on.
Should bug summary be changed to include "Trash folder missing"?

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk) from comment #21) > Should bug summary be changed to include "Trash folder missing"? I don't think so because in my first comment I have explained that it is possible to move the messages to the trash folder, so I assume it is still there (in Thunderbird UI).

I am having similar problems as follows: 1. I start TBird and everything works fine: I can delete/move messages, either with the keyboard or the mouse. 2. at some point all that stops working (I've tried but haven't figured out the defining action): I can no delete or move messages and sending a message results in copying to the sent folder hangs and eventually has to be cancelled. 3. I have purged and re-installed Thunderbird. 4. I found that I have some mixed ownership on files in ~/.thunderbird wherein another group ('lp') had ownership on files in the folder. I have chown'ed them all to jseidel:jseidel 5. At one point, I found a ~/.mozilla-thunderbird folder, but have removed that with no ill effects. This happens every time I start Thunderbird and let it run for a while... getting to the point where it's unusable because of all the starting/stopping. There are no error messages... just failure to perform. If there's anything I can give you to help resolve this problem, let me know. Thanks...
This morning I tried running Thunderbird as sudo... same problem: started off working just fine and then eventually got to the same problem: cannot delete emails; cannot copy sent emails to the Sent folder. Sadly, I'm going to have to find another email client for Ubuntu unless this can be fixed!
I am having similar problems as Can not delete emails with keyboard or delete button

FYI, this is happening on Thunderbird 24

another report on mozilla support: https://support.mozilla.org/fr/questions/999354 I didn't succeed to add a tag with the bug number reference. Is it possible on Support.mozilla (as it was on GSFN)?
I have the same problem with Thunderbird 31.4.0 and Ubuntu 14.10.

I am experiencing the same issue with 31.7.0. Trying to remove Trash* in the TB directory didn't fix the issue. Repairing the folder didn't. Creating a new Trash (Corbeille as the install in french) failed too. I am using a Windows system (not mine).
Nothing in the console. shift+delete does delete the email

I have been able to fix the issue. Instead of creating the "Trash" folder in the local folders, I created it in the account (in the screenshot: in the @wanadoo.fr account). Anyway, we should detect this situation and trigger an error message like "Could not find the xxx@wanadoo.fr/Trash folder"
I'm embarrassed to admit that, at least some of the time I encountered this problem, I had inadvertently engaged the NUMBER LOCK, converting the DEL key I was using into a decimal point (my laptop has a dedicated DEL key as well). Obviously, hitting decimal point won't delete anything.
Have just had a support issue where the deleted folder was removed by the program RegCure PRO. To quote from the topic. "When using the program RegCure PRO it delets the trash folder" https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1065652? This apparently is only an issue on POP accounts. The software leaves IMAP trash folders alone. Is any one else affected using this software?
When I had this problem with the Feed articles, no, I did not have that software. Meanwhile, a lot of time has passed, my feeds are changed, my computers has changed, even my operating system has changed and the problem does not occur any more to me (although the Thunderbird profile I use is the same).
Problem appeared out of nowhere, maybe after a Windows 10 update. ALL my email accounts are affected, not just a single account. All accounts are POP3. Platform is Windows 10, 64-bit. Clicking the "delete" button in the email window does NOT work. Shift-DEL still does work and deletes emails permanently.

After some more trying I created an empty "Trash" file in all of my email folders under: ...\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxx.default\Mail After this the DEL button worked again!! Btw, Thunderbird version is 52.5.0
When Thunderbird is installed using POP accounts, Thunderbird creates the Trash file as a folder which prevents you deleting the messages in Thunderbird. If you: - shutdown Thunderbird - go to the affected Mail accounts - remove the Trash folder - Create an empty Trash file NOT a folder - start Thunderbird You should be able to delete once more using either you keyboard's delete key or the delete button in Thunderbird. This worked for me on Ubuntu Linux 16.04 LTS, Thunderbird 52.7.0 (64-bit). Cheers

jswalsh,

Does it still fail?

Walt, can you reproduce using comment 44?

Flags: needinfo?(jswalsh2000) → needinfo?(wls220spring)

Deleting messages and emptying trash the normal way works for me using Thunderbird 78.6.0 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with a test profile and one account created.

Tried the steps in comment 44 although I'm a little fuzzy on them.

Shutdown Thunderbird.
Went to the affected Mail account
Removed Trash and Trash.msf
Not sure how to create a new empty trash file. What was I supposed to do with the old one?
Restarted Thunderbird and both Trash and Trash.msf were recreated.
Deleting and emptying the Trash work just fine for me.

Hello,
All sudden I started having this issue as well, now I have to delete using the menu through right mouse button.
But I get no exception, the delete just won´t work, the trash folder exists.

If I press the delete quickly several times it deletes the message (my keyboard is working fine).

Additional info, in my case is Windows 10, latest version.

Does anyone still see this issue?
