Currently URL autocomplete only works with URLs that users typed in the location
bar or through the "Open Address..." command. I don't see why the bookmarks
should be excluded. In fact I'd expect them to have higher priority in
completion since they should be more frequently accessed.
RFE, confirming.

What's going on with this bug? This is something I'd certainly expect to be
available, especially since (as the submitter noted) bookmarks should be
often-accessed.

Now that bug 43189 finally landed, maybe this bug can get some love?

The bookmark names should be included in the search as well -- the reason we
bookmark things is that we can't remember the URLs. :-)
Yes, please. This is a great idea!

An additional benefit of a fix for this is that it will *help* solve the very
frustrating autocomplete behavior of offering too much.

For example, I want to go to

  www.amazon.com

but the autocomplete is offering

  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/047120708X//ref=sr_1_11_1/107-1201097-9948538

so I have have to select and delete the extra stuff.
(Is there another bug filed for this behavior - the closest
I found was http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109758)

With a fix for this bug, if I bookmarked www.amazon.com, then
I could force the autocomplete to offer me "www.amazon.com", because
bookmarks would have precedence.
Dustin: You're thinking of bug 96700. (Personally, I would prefer bug 78270 to
be fixed first)

Autocomplete should optionally include any subset of the following:
bookmarks, history, location bar, URLs actually ever *typed* into the
location bar. Its a mystery to me what the current behavior is using.

We have a pair of long-standing bugs (101642 and 117967 plus possibly others I
haven't found myself?) here both addressing the same really basic functionality
(but arguably not quite dupes of each other) that is missing from Mozilla at the
moment.

If this issue is not considered important enough to be fixed, then perhaps one
should consider that the whole concept of "bookmarks" is being undermined, since
the most desirable and natural way to use them (it would seem from comments on
these bugs and their dupes) is currently denied to users.

Perhaps merging these bugs into a new bug (taking comment #9 from bug 101462 as
the starting point) would help focus the seriousness of the usability problem(s)?

Also, merging the concept that BOTH names (from bookmarks/all other sources) and
URL's should be subject to this...

(quoting comment #9 since I'm applying this same comment to both bugs):

"Autocomplete should optionally include any subset of the following:
bookmarks, history, location bar, URLs actually ever *typed* into the
location bar. Its a mystery to me what the current behavior is using."
This lack of functionality, and this alone, may keep me and perhaps others from
switching from MSIE to Mozilla on the Mac platform. If I know that I have a
buried bookmark pointing to Apple's movie trailer website and I type trailer I
want it to autocomplete to that bookmark as an option. This is a **big deal**
to me.

In just about all other respects Mozilla is superior to MSIE.

After searching around for the status on this bug/feature and possible
workarounds, I've found someone has made a Firefox extension to add bookmarked
URLS into the autocompleter

I'm proud to annouce the public release of version 1.0 of the Autocomplete Manager, which fixes this bug by means of an extension! The extension provides advanced features for the address Autocomplete framework in Firefox. Features include:
- matching against page titles
- matching against bookmark addresses and bookmark names
- matching any part of the domain name
- various sorting criteria for suggested entries, including alphabetical, most-frequently-visited and most-recently-visited
- resorting the suggestion list on the fly according to different criteria
- showing/hiding page titles and visit counts
- setting the number of visible entries on the popup
- define the truncation for long addresses
- numerous fixes for Autocomplete-related bugs

The extension can also function as a rudimentary History Manager. More details, as well as the installation package, are available at http://www.cs.ucla.edu/~nikitas/acmanager

Please let me know of any suggestions/bugs.

Thank you!
Note, firefox 3 will have this (see bug #278747)
I hope (and, apparently, so does KaiRo, see bug 96700 comment #33) that Firefox's "new" Location Bar Autocomplete (aka awesmebar) will "eventually" be ported to SeaMonkey 2. The question, of course, is "how late does 'eventually' mean, and who will do the job?".
