On a Spanish version I see:
IMAP:
Bandeja de entrada (translated from Inbox)
Drafts, Templates, Sent, Spam, Trash.
Local folders:
Plantillas (translated from templates)
Papelera (translated from Trash)
Bandeja de salida (translated from Outbox)
Bug 1979511 switched off localisation for anything but local folders.

Allo stato, 20 ottobre 2025, le cartelle hanno ancora nome in inglese; modelli è templates, posta inviata è sent, cestino è trash.
Spero e mi auguro che il problema venga risolto in fretta

Hmm, latest dupe says "This issue occurs on a POP3 account (not IMAP)."

Hmm, latest dupe says "This issue occurs on a POP3 account (not IMAP)."
It does occur on IMAP accounts, I have several on my own mail server (dovecot) and it affects those. It doesn't occur with Gmail over IMAP however.

I think that behavior is consistent with what we believe to be the cause of this issue, since the localization is happening in nsMsgDBFolder, which is shared across all protocols.

Bug 1993842 - Partial backout of Bug 1979511. r=darktrojan,aleca
Uplift Approval Request
- Please state case for uplift consideration and ensure bug severity is set: We are receiving many bug duplicate bug reports about non-localized folder names, so this is negatively impacting many users.
- User impact if declined: On servers that don't support server side localization, or for which users haven't set up server side localization, users will see special folder names in whichever language the server chooses to return them in.
- Is this code covered by automated tests?: Yes
- Has the fix been verified in Daily?: Yes
- Has the fix been verified in Beta?: No
- Needs manual test from QA?: Yes
- If yes, steps to reproduce: 1. Using a non-english localized version of Thunderbird.
- Connect to a server that returns folder names in english.
- Folder names for special folders (inbox, trash, spam, etc.) should be presented in the localized language.
- List of other uplifts needed: None
- Risk to taking this patch: Low
- Why is the change risky/not risky? (and alternatives if risky): This reverts a previous change that removed localization for special folder names.
- Does the fix cause any migrations to be skipped?: No
- String changes made/needed:

This will land in release before beta next week.
Vlad/Ramona, will you be able to test this in 144.0.2 when it's available?

ETA 144.0.2 next week.
This is going to be bumped to 145.0 scheduled for release on Nov 11th. It is intertwined with another fix that we can't uplift and could use additional testing on beta anyway.

Name Thunderbird
Version 146.0a1
Build ID 20251108101701
Update History Installed 9th November 2025 I undated it when I started investigating this.
Update Channel nightly
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:146.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/146.0a1
OS Windows_NT 10.0 26200
Application Binary C:\Program Files\Thunderbird Daily\thunderbird.exe
When will I be expecting to see the correct Junk folder in the folder pane?
Or does the foldertree.json need to be refreshed?
The same account in the ESR version has no subscription options associated with it except via account settings. Is that yet another bug? But it now has a handy Junk folder I guess created in the Daily version renaming process. This mess is also reflected in the Android app version, not that I use it, but according to this guy. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1538332

Are you sure this bug should be reopened? Only the comm-release part was backed out and a fix is now on the way in bug 1998456.

Hi All,
I recognize this bug is closed, but we are looking for some testing of a fix for this issue as soon as possible (release is Tues Jan 13th).
We have a fix that we are uplifting to 147.0 that limits localization of special folder names to specific names, and adds the mail.useLocalizedFolderNames preference to toggle that localization.
To test you will have to install Thunderbird from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/candidates/147.0b5-candidates/build1/. Note that we don't plan to release an official 147.0b5 because we already merged beta->release and it gets complicated to unwind the merge.
Please reach out with any feedback, good or bad.
Thanks in advance,
Corey

Please reach out with any feedback, good or bad.
Beta 148.0b1
changed 'mail.useLocalizedFolderNames' from true to false.
after a restart, all my folders are now being displayed correctly.
Thankyou for the fix.
Why is it set up as 'true' by default when that option causes so many various problems?
Surely it should be 'false' by default.
Suggestion - in 'Settings' > 'Appearance', please add an option to switch on/off the correct display of folder names.
This may effect anyone with Imap accounts and it will resolve many problems.
This setting is a very important option which effects alot of people.
There are many people who feel intimidated to go into Config settings and whilst I feel it's easy, I know plenty of people where it's out of their comfort zone or ability. I'm asking for easy access in Settings > Appearance OR even better and set the preference default to 'false' by default and let those who do not want to see correct server names have the option to alter them.
