Trying to uninstall T-bird but files for attachments keep needing thunderbird to open them in Outlook express even though all associated Thunderbird files gone. Thanks

Reproducible: Always
What do you mean "files for attachments"
Version: unspecified → 1.5
I had to go into Search Files/Folders to remove Tbird ( Add/Remove would not do it). No more Tbird, right? But when I checked my mail with Outlook I got some Digest mail (with the emails as attachments). When I click on the attachments they are in a drop-down box but each one has the Tbird icon next to it and Outlook won't or can't open them. There is a message about not having 'THUNDERBIRD ~.EXE'. How do I get Outlook to get back to normal? Had to reload Tbird to read them.
Thanks,
Dan
If you didn't use the uninstaller to remove thunderbird, there is no way it could deassociate itself from the .eml files. Just removing programs by deleting the program folder will mess up your system pretty fast, on windows that is.

Anyways, in windows explorer you can edit the program association for .eml files, e.g. right-click open with and mark "always use this..."

Problem solved? (resolve as INVALID)
Not solved. Where is Windows Explorer? As I said, I tried Add/Remove but nothing happened. It works on other programs.
Thanks.

> Where is Windows Explorer?

It's the file browsing view you get e.g. when you click My Computer/My Documents on your Desktop.

BTW, there are very good user support forums over at http://forums.mozillazine.org/
Leaving open as the reporter said Add/Remove didn't work. Reporter, can you please reinstall thunderbird and then try uninstall via Add/Remove and let us know what happened?

Component: General → Installer
Summary: Very annoying → Add/Remove doesn't uninstall Thunderbird
Reloaded it twice and still won't Add/Remove. Never mind, I'll live with it. I'm getting used to it's quirks. Just wish it would open the mail attachments in a bigger pane.
Thanks.
So, what did Add/Remove do? Did the uninstall wizard pop up? If not, you can try running uninstall.exe found in Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\uninstall\.

Same problem here: Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 on Windows 98.
Add/Remove does not bring up the uninstall wizard. WinTop shows uninstall.exe process running (0.3% CPU), but uninstall.exe has no windows (not even hidden windows).
Running uninstall.exe found in Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\uninstall\ produces the same result: uninstall.exe process running, no windows.
This may be WinME/Win9X specific. It appears similar to Bug 338752 for Firefox.
Summary: Add/Remove doesn't uninstall Thunderbird → [winME/win9X only] Add/Remove doesn't uninstall Thunderbird
Since the installer was changed for 2.0, can someone try if this works in a recent nightly? http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-mozilla1.8/

If it does, mark this as wfm, it won't be getting fixed in 1.5.0.x anyway.

I tried that and it didn't work with Thunderbird 1.5.0.10. Right now, several unconfirmed bugs have the same description, same steps to reproduce, same Thunderbird rv (1.5.0.x branch) version and same external symptoms (hang, non-responsive uninstall.exe): bug 335458, bug 337937, bug 346651, bug 365954, bug 373980 .

This bug should be considered as a very high priority (even as a blocker) because if Windows-based Thunderbird users can not uninstall version 1.5.0.x manually (via Control Panel/Remove Programs), then they can not install Thunderbird 2.0.0.x.
