Erstes Diff für faq.php

Respekt, Michael!

Mal nachfragen, was da los ist.
Attachment #387502 - Attachment is obsolete: true

Hi Austin, no thanks. Bug 501514 has now given me check-in permissons for mozillaservice.org, so I was able to check in the faq.php (r29542).
I can't checkin a file because of an "svn: Access denied" error.

Hi, the faq.php and the certificate are finished, I'm just doing the last 100 strings of the messages.po.
messages.po and messages.mo checked in, r29683.
Status: NEW → RESOLVED
Closed: 15 years ago
Resolution: --- → FIXED
I just noticed that de is failing to compile the messages.po file.

./de/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po:1138: duplicate message definition...
./de/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po:900: ...this is the location of the first definition
msgfmt: found 1 fatal error

I'll attempt to fix this.
Status: RESOLVED → REOPENED
Resolution: FIXED → ---
There are two msgid's which are duplicate. I removed the first. See the attached patch. Let me know what you want to do here...

for this msgid:
msgid "The Mozilla community has a history of changing the world &ndash; and the Web &ndash; in all kinds of amazing ways. Now we want to make a personal difference in your world, and help fellow public benefit organizations gain from the open web. See how our community has already pledged to help groups like yours: <a href='%1$s'>Read Pledge Stories</a>."

I deleted:

and kept:
Thanks for your patch, I've just applied it to my messages.po and now there seems to be one string missing entirely.

I'll have to check that this evening (or Thomas will, depending on who has time).

If we don't find out, which string is missing, it might be better to begin a new translation by pasting the strings we already translated.
Sorry for the trouble. Let me know if I can help. (If you see an English String, you can paste it into the bug and I can search for it).
I'm currently checking a Diff between the English messages.po and our German translation, trying to find the missing string.

While doing so, I noticed another difference: In the English version, some strings (probably those containing a "\n" are placed in two lines, for example

msgid "" msgid "Show a non-profit how to use social networking to grow its base of\n"
"Show a non-profit how to use social networking to grow its base of\n"
"supporters."

In the German version this looks different:

msgid "Show a non-profit how to use social networking to grow its base of\n"
"supporters."

Can this cause problems?
I can't find the missing string. Austin, do you have a possibility to directly check the messages.po file for missing strings?

If not, I suggest to start the translation from a new English file, using the strings we already translated, as mentioned in c23.

Sorry for the delay.
I've checked in an update to en_US/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po.

http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/mozillaservice.org/trunk/web/application/locale/en_US/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po?r1=29426&r2=29744

I've made an error merging at some point...

Other than that I don't see anything... the en_US/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po I've just checked in is a fresh extraction of gettext strings.
Ok. Thomas, please have a look at it, if you can't find the problem, I suggest to start translating a new messages.po. We can use the strings we already translated, but using a new file (and using only poedit for editing) should prevent any problems.
I'll start creating a new German translation for the messages.po this evening. Neither Thomas nor myself could find the error.
Attached file Newly translated messages.po (obsolete) —
I've just finished translating the new messages.po, however, there still is a problem:
The file I dowloaded didn't have msgstrs for
msgid "About %1$s second ago"
msgid "About %1$s minute ago"
msgid "About %1$s hour ago"
msgid "About %1$s day ago"

which should have been singular and plural for each of the 4 msgids.
When I had finshed translating the file, poedit refused to save it.
I've now added the msgstrs manually, and though the seem to be in the right place, but the translation of these strings isn't displayed correctly. The text field always contains the translated strings of the msgid that was selected previously.

Austin, could you please have a look at the file? You might be able to determine what's wrong.
Attachment #388143 - Attachment is obsolete: true
Hi there, since no one has replied to my last comment, I've just checked in r30225, which s the version I attatched to this bug in c#30.

We'll see, if it's working.
I was fine with it. Thanks Michael!
Well, obviously it didn't work. There are still parts of the staging-website in English. I still don't know, what's wrong.
Thanks for your patience. I'm working through some other issues and hope to get to this by the weekend or Monday. Thanks for fixing the po so that it will compile. We'll get these last details fixed.
(In reply to comment #33)
Can you put in the urls of pages which have English strings showing up?
I've looked on stage, but don't see the problem.
Well, most of the translations seem to be working now, I just don't understand, why ...

A few notes though:

On <http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/home/index/de_DE> the text "Stunden investiert" (hours donated) on the top right isn't completely visible. Is it possible to change that?

Firefox issues a warning for the certificate on <https://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/auth/login_form/de_DE>. Will this change, once the Mozilla Service Week starts?

The section "speaking your language" on <http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/tell_us/build_mozservice09/de_DE> is not in the messages.po file and therefore isn't translated.

The sections "The Mozilla Blog" and "Above Fhe Fold" on <http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/promote/press/de_DE> are not in the messages.po file and therefore aren't translated.

The page <http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/learn_more/terms_of_service/de_DE> displays an English version of the Terms of Service, in addition to the translation. Is this correct?

Hi there: Yes, we should localize the descriptions of each to give context. So the two new strings are:

* News, notes and ramblings from the Mozilla project
* Mozilla in the news

Thanks for catching this!
Will you add these strings to the messages.po files of all the locales, or should we manually edit the files?
By the way: I just checked in r30480 to re-add a strings I accidentally removed.
(In reply to comment #43)
I'll add the strings.

I mispoke... This page is supposed to be in English. The idea is that
regardless of locale, if a user isn't finding their preferred language and is
fluent in English, then they can get information on how to build out the site
for their locale.
Another issue that Thomas told me about:
In the FAQ [1] and on the "Promote" page [2] we have links to the Mozilla Service Week flyers in different formats (look for the text "Flugblatt der Mitmachwoche"). However, the links point to the English files. Could you please change that, so the links point to the German translations?

[1] <http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/learn_more/faq/de_DE>
[2] <http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/promote/mozservice09/de_DE>
Hey there: We're still waiting on the final files from our design firm for the flyers.

Thanks!
Please svn up to avoid conflicts. The msgmerge command which folded in the 4 new strings will reformat parts that "didn't change".

This is done and ready for update. Thanks for you patience.
I've translated the new strings and I've attached a diff. Thomas, I'd like you to have a look at it. I've used a normal text editor to do this. Using poEdit makes a diff almost useless, because it changes the order of the strings.

Diff for messages.po after adding new strings

> "News, notes and ramblings from the Mozilla project <a class=\"more\" href=\"%"

> msgid "Above The Fold"

> "The Mozilla community has a history of changing the world &ndash; and the "
> "Web &ndash; in all kinds of amazing ways. Now's your chance to take action!"
> msgstr ""

Wir sollten uns was besseres ausdenken. ;-)

Yes, this is a stage versus production issue. Everything should work in prod.
(In reply to comment #49)
> Statt "Mitschriften" vielleicht "Notizen" oder "Anmerkungen"? [...]

Was meinst du, Michael?

Need a service opportunity to fulfill your pledge? <a href=\"%s\">Check out our partners to find one!</a>
?
I've added a few translated strings in r48259. Thomas, please have a look.
If you have a suggestion for the new string mentioned in comment #54, feel free to add you translation.

"<a href=\"%s\">Finden Sie eine bei unseren Partnern!</a>"

Danke.
Alright, r48308 is checked in, the translation is now complete.

Austin, do we need to replace the string "Language-Team", so it says "German"?
Yes, please do! You can put anything you want there.

Also, please svn up I fixed a technical issue in the po file.

I miss the context here. Where is it included?
It's on the top right of the Mozilla Service Week page. The plane consists of two seperate images: first there's the image for the plane, then there's text (the number and the words "Stunden investiert") and then there's the second image, which shows the tail of the banner.
Sorry, but I don't have access to that page. Does it need a personal login or is there a general user/pass combination?

Sure but I need the place where the translation is used. I don't see it on any of the pages.
It is the alt text of the images.

If you view source of any /de_DE page, you can search for
<img class="counter-decoration" src="/img/css/bg-plane.png" width="199" height="94"
and you will see the current alt="your translation here"

I've never heard Spruchband in such a situation. Banner is already common in German. With the change r=me.
Ok, thanks. r48520 checked in.
Checked in r48557 to fit the link into the string "Protecting individual's <a href='%s'>security and privacy</a> when they are online". See bug 500840 comment #47.
We found a bug with the navigation saying "Stories" instead of "Stories & Inspiration". Fixing this caused de to have a bad layout in the top navigation.

Do you want to replace "Geschichten & Inspiration" with "Geschichten"? (this would match what it has been for the last week, before we fixed the "Stories" bug.

Sorry for the late notice.
Michael, have we ever asked the community to make a review of the page? If not we should do it. Can you please create a forum entry? That will help us to solve remaining translation and layout issues.

I checked quickly and found following items:

* http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/learn_more/volunteer/de_DE
** "Laden Sie sich Plaketten und Flugblätter herunter" - Was sind Plaketten?
** "betterplace suchen" => "Auf betterplace suchen"

* http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/partners/overview/de_DE
** Gesellschaften auf der ganzen Welt => Gemeinschaften?

* http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/promote/mozservice09/de_DE

Can we give them the staging website? I think, it's easier to check, than a text file.

Well, "Plaketten" is "site badges". Is there any special term for that?
I can't find the string "betterplace" in my messages.po

If I remember correctly, Thomas suggested "Gesellschaft" as an alternative to "Gemeinschaft". I'll have to take a closer look to see, which term fits better. Maybe we can use both, depending on the context.

Yes, please replace it in the site menu with "Geschichten". The other term is too long.

> * http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/partners/overview/de_DE

> * http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/promote/mozservice09/de_DE
> ** Plaketten too

Haben sich hier nicht Buttons auch eingebuergert? Ich hoere eigentlich fast nie was anderes.

And I noticed 2 other things:

1.) At http://www.spreadfirefox.com/affiliates/homepage?category=54&locale=37#getbuttons the last German button has the old string "Verbessern Sie Ihre Gemeinschaft" instead of the new "Helfen Sie Ihrem Umfeld" according to bug 505363 #c29.

2.) The flyers at http://mozillaservice.stage.mozilla.com/promote/mozservice09/de_DE have an old string "um unsere Gemeinschaft, unsere Welt, unser Internet zu verbessern." instead of "um unser Umfeld, unsere Welt und unser Internet zu verbessern.". Maybe it's possible to change that? If not and we are to late, it's no problem. It's readable.

Hi all: We're doing a major PR push on August the 18th. Do you think we can have the site final by Monday, April 17th? Please let me know!
I mean August 17th! April 17th is my birthday :)
I don't really want to shock you but the last update from Michael wasn't finished. He replaced the old string by the old string itself. ;-) I've attached the "really" updated version of the German flyer now with the new string ("um unser Umfeld" instead of "um unsere Gemeinschaft") and the spelling error ("Hilfe" instead of "Hife"). Will the design agency kill us for that? Or have they closed the door for us "German error men"? ;-)

Michael will fix a handful spelling errors on the website tomorrow; we got some feedback in our German forums. So, our translation for the site is ready for launch at the beginning of the next week.

More corrections for the messages.po

Sehr gute Änderungen.
Ein paar Anmerkungen hab ich noch.

> msgid "I Want To Help!"
>-msgstr "Ich will helfen!"

-> "Ich möchte helfen!"

> #: views/common/pledge.php:2 views/tell_us/your_pledge.php:4
> msgid "Pledge Your Hours"
>-msgstr "Versprechen Sie Stunden"
>+msgstr "Ihre versprochenen Stunden"

> msgid "This question is for testing whether you are a human being!"

> msgid "By acting as a volunteer, you agree to these Terms."

> msgid "Mozilla Service - FAQ"
>-msgstr "Mozilla-Mitmachwoche - FAQ"

> msgid "Thank you for registering"

> msgid "Mozilla Service - Activity Feed"

Subscription? Do you mean, creating an account? I haven't tested that yet.
Whatever it is, yes. It should be done before calling it ready. We fixed some spelling errors in the email which is sent when registering. No idea if there are other issues.
I've just tried to register and it seems to be working. The character encoding in the confirmation e-mail doesn't seem to fit. It's set to ISO-8859-15, but I must set it to UTF-8 to have the umlauts displayed properly.

Some minutes ago I tried to register myself and silently failed for about one minute. I had to ask myself: "Where the heck I can sign up?". The link is not only in the middle of a paragraph full of text but also tiny. I believe that a lot of people will have problems to see this link and will fail to register because they will give up. We should really ensize the Register link and make it more prominent. Otherwise the registering email looks fine now. Umlauts are supported.

Further don't we support the opt-in method? Looks like that anyone can register without having to enable the account by clicking an authentication link.

The mentioned issues should probably moved to another bug.

Diff of messages.po, adding new strings

I need help from a mister-wong.de user.

The de activity feed is configured with
http://www.mister-wong.de/rss/tags/mozservice09/new/

Nothing has been tagged 'mozservice09', so this is generating an error in our server logs. Can someone please tag a url with mozservice09?

Thanks.

Austin, where it has to be tagged? I have no idea about the procedure here. Aren't you able to do this?
I'm not a mister-wong.de user.

I could do this, but would have to use Google Translate on every screen and learn how to use mister-wong.de.
Procedure:
1) log into mister-wong.de
2) add http://www.examiner.com/x-14933-SF-Job-Search-Examiner~y2009m9d5-Mozilla-is-calling-all-technology-professionals
or preferably another story in German
3) Tag the link from step 2 with "mozservice09"

This will put the story into the mister-wong.de feed. For a comparison this is similar to
http://delicious.com/tag/mozservice09

Jane, would you be able to tag it on mr. wong?

[betterplace for de]

When your happy with Phase 3 work and your team has tested it on stage, please update your bug with "phase 3 sign off". Thanks. We are working towards a 11:59pm release tonight, in roughly 15 hours.

Sites will be left on phase 2 copy until they sign off on phase 3 work.

Thanks for all your time and hard work.
