"Replied" status of original incoming message is not changed to 'replied' if reply message is first saved as draft before re-opening and sending.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. select an incoming message from list (original message)
2. press reply (editor opens)
3. write and save message (Ctrl+s) (no sending)
4. close editor
5. re-open message from 'Drafts' folder
6. select 'Edit...' to open reply message in editor
7. finalise message and send the reply to the original message
Actual Results:  
status of original message is not set to 'replied'

Expected Results:  
status of original message is set to 'replied'

reasons for the request: usually I rely on "reply" icon to know if it may be useful to use "show in conversation" feature. Unlike I should use "show in conversation" blindfold
dunno about you, I just want to know if I have actually replied to whatever message, or am i still cogitating.  I confess it's a bug in me as well, but still.

I also just encountered this and came to mention it here. Glad it's already been submitted. I also rely a lot on the reply icon to indicate that I have replied and have not left the conversation hanging at my end. 

A "work-around" I found is to click FWD on the msg and then edit the TO: field and send it to yourself. That way you don't actually send another reply, but the reply icon does appear on the email. (I then deleted the extra reply msg that I sent myself)

Hope that helps hold you over until it's fixed.

As seen in bug 268589 comment #1 (IMAP drats folder, on 2005-07-31, Tb 1.0.2) and bug 268589 comment #3 (unknown drats folder, mail in both local&IMAP folder, on 2005-11-04, perhaps Tb 1.5b2), phenomenon reported to this bug looks very old issue, and it may depend on Tb version and it seems to depend on mail location and drafts folder location.
As for (iii) and/or (iv), it looks problem since initial of Tb because bug 268589 comment #1 is report for "Tb 1.0.2 on 2005-07-31, IMAP drats folder case".

Magnus, regression by which version of Tb over which version of Tb?

If this bug's problem occurred on (i) and/or (ii), local Drafts folder case, for long time, I believe very many users would have posted "me too" in bug 268589 or this bug or bugs duped to this bug. As you added "IMAP only" in bug summary, I think IMAP drafts folder only problem since initial.
If reression existed, it's perhaps on (i) and/or (ii), local drafts folder case, in some Tb releases or some Tb builds, and it's already resolved, because this bug's problem doesn't occur on (i) and/or (ii) in Tb 8.
I've tested this in TB8.0 today and it is working correctly.
I clicked REPLY and then saved the draft. Then I openned the draft and sent it. I DO have a reply icon by the message. GREAT! Thanks to whoever fixed it!!

You reported problem on 2011-03-14 in this bug, so you perhaps used Tb 3.1.7, or Tb 3.1.8/Tb 3.1.9.

And, your case is case of (i) in comment #15, replied mail is in local mail folder and draft mail is saved in local Drafts folder.
(local mail folder == mail folder of POP3 account or "Local Folders")
Regression looks to have actually existed in some Tb releases on case (i), and it looks resolved by Tb 8 or a Tb release before Tb 8.

Because your case is local Drafts folder case, at least two different problems are being processed in this bug, unless initial report of comment #0 and all problem reports in this bug is report for case (i) or (ii), local Drafts folder case.
(a) problem when IMAP Drafts folder since initial of Tb.
    I believe "Keyword: regression" is invalid for this problem,
    because issue from Tb 1.0.
(b) regression on local Drafts folder case which is already worksforme in Tb 8.
    I believe "IMAP only" in bug summary is incorrect for this problem.

Because at least two IMAP cases are duped to this bug, this bug is apparently not for local Drafts folder case only.
Why can "Reply, Send Later" case can be duped to "Reply, Save as draft, exit composition, Edit draft, Send" case so quickly without any problem analysis, simply because external symptom of "replied status is not set" is same?
Above comment's title is "Duped bugs to this bug". I erased it upon copy&paste.

For "Send Later" case.
 STR of this bug :

 Send Later :
   (1) Reply, (2) Send Later,           => saved in Outbox of Local Folders
              (3) Send Unsent Messeages => read from Outbox, and mail is sent
Because Outbox(Unsent Messages/Unsent Messages.msf) is local mail folder, "Send Later" is almost identical to "Save as draft into local Drafts folder" and "Send Unsent Messages" is almost identical to "Edit draft in local Drafts folder & Send", except mail folder to which mail data is saved and mail folder from which mail data is read.
So, same problem can happen in both cases.
However, "Send Later" is never absolutely same as "Save as draft to local Drafts folder", and "Send Unsent Messages" is never absolutely same as "Edit draft in local Drafts folder & Send".
Even if problem is caused by same flaw in same program code in both cases, I believe both are better kept in separated bugs with setting dependency until developer who will create fix has completed problem analysis and has found cause of problem, unless this bug is for any phenomenon/problem of "somehow replied status is not set after reply mail is sent" in any Tb release.
Currently known status in Tb 8.

    "Save as draft" == execute Save as draft, and close mail composition window.

Magnus Melin, is this applicable to IMAP Drafts case?
Term "IMAP" in "fix for imap case on trunk" of that bug 128996 is "replied mail in IMAP folder" instead of "IMAP Drafts folder", isn't it?
Was fix verification test actually done for "IMAP Drafts folder" case in that bug?

Following is apparent.
(a) "Replied is not set when (B)"(IMAP Drafts case) is reported to bug 268589 comment #1 on 2005-07-31 for Tb 1.0.2.
(c) "Replied is not set when (A)", which is worksforme in Tb 8, was involved in problems reported in this bug.
(d) Problem of a duped bug to this bug is for "replied is not set when (C)" in Thunderbird/3.1.3, and it's also worksforme in Tb 8.

It looks for me next;
1. IMAP Drafts folder case doesn't work since initial of Tb.
2. By bug 128996, "local Drafts folder/one times of Save as draft" case was resolved for both "replied mail in local mail folder" and "replied mail in local mail folder".
That bug was finally changed to FIXED on 2007-07-30 with patch of "fix for imap case on trunk", and Target Milestone: mozilla1.9alpha7 was set on 2008-05-21 by you.
3. Reression on "local Drafts folder/one times of Save as draft" case happened.
At least this bug's comment #11 by David Wiebe on 2011-03-14 is for this case, as proven by his comment #16.
4. The regression of 3 is resolved by unknown fix, and it's already WORKSFORME in Tb 8.
5. Following are left.
5-1. IMAP Drafts folder case is still untouched.
5-2. "Multiple times of Edit draft/Save as draft" is never cared for.
Following is quick history of bugs which contain "replied status" in bug summary and for "replied status when reply/forward". 
Regression by next fix?

Yes, I'm using pop3 for my email.
I have never before used the "send later" feature, but once I found it - I tested your request.
Testing the 3 scenarios you listed above, I get no reply status icon for all 3 scenarios. In all 3 cases, the replied status indicator on the message is NOT there. It only works when:
{Reply, Save as draft, Exit composition window, Edit draft, Send} = Working.
{Reply, Send Later, Send Unsent Messages} = Working.

Requested three cases were (D), (E), and (D)+(E) of my comment #22.
Sorry for excess test request for (D)+(E).

bug 710586 is report of (B) of my comment #22 in Tb 8, and was closed as dup of this bug. I reported (D) in Tb 8 to bug 710584 too. But I closed that bug as dup of this bug according to comment of "I'd dupe bug 710584 too" in bug 710586 comment #3, because bug 710586 was closed as dup of this bug.

It's very hard for me to consider that (B), IMAP Drafts case, is regression by a Tb build around Tb 3.0bx.

To [:Aureliano Buendía] who is comment #1 poster, who confirmed this bug based on your test result in comment #1, and who saw same in Tb 2(Ludovic said so):

Did you check which case? Local Drafts folder? IMAP Drafts folder? Or both?
If IMAP Drafts case is also regression by a fix, with which Tb build did you saw that case (B) on IMAP Drafts folder worked well?

For which case of (A) or (B) in comment #22 did you report your comment #0?
Because report on Tb 3.0b4, I think you were testing beta builds or candidate build. So, opening of this bug did imply "worked well in Tb 2". Is it right?
I could see replied status in case (B) at last with next Tb trunk nightly build.

Even though same STR, regression on local Drafts folder/Outbox(Unsent Messages) and regression on IMAP Drafts folder seem different regressions.
It looks IMAP only regression in Tb 3.0aX/3.0bY over fix of bug 128996 during Tb 3.0aX/3.0bY, as Magnus Melin says in comment #3 and in bug summary.

Multiple Tb builds were checked during my holidays with "replied mail in local mail folder" only.
Because replied mail is held in local mail folder, both bug 268589(Compact of the local mail folder) and bug 639702(negative offset if local mail folder size>2GB) were carefully excluded.

(ii)  Replied mail = mail in IMAP  mail folder, Drafts folder = local mail folder
(iii) Replied mail = mail in local mail folder, Drafts folder = IMAP  mail folder
(iv)  Replied mail = mail in IMAP  mail folder, Drafts folder = IMAP  mail folder

If (i) or (iii), you saw bug 268589 and/or bug 639702, didn't you?

FYI.
I consolidated reports for IMAP case to bug 530528(dups: bug 627989, bug 710586), and opened bug 711909(dup: Bug 710584) for multiple save as/edit case.
So, there are known four ceses;
a) IMAP Drafts folder: bug 530528(regression over fix of bug 128996)
b) Replied mail in local mail folder: bug 268589(offset is changed by Compact)
c) Replied mail in local mail folder: bug 639702(negative offset if file size>2GB)
d) Multiple Save as draft/Edit draft: bug 711909

If this bug is IMAP drafts folder case, close this bug as dup of bug 530528, please. If this bug is for "replied mail in local mail folder" case, please check whether dup of bug 268589 and/or bug 639702 or not.

Reply/Send Later case(bug 597441) can't be dup of this bug, if this bug is same problem as bug 530528. And bug 268589 and/or bug 639702 can occur in bug 597441's case. So, I re-opened bug 597441 for problem analysis.

Any problem listed in comment #32 will be resolved by your patch?
I think this bug is better closed as dup of bug 530528, if comment #0 is IMAP case and if confirming of this bug was actually done based on test results with IMAP. I can't see any　comment on IMAP in this bug by bug opener, who confirmed this bug, and "me too" poster.

If IMAP case, please propose patch in crisp bug 530528 to avoid chaos.
