Attached file files to translate (obsolete) —
We are setting up a promotional website for the 5 year anniversary of Firefox.

This website is open for localization, there are 2 files to translate:

One .po file for the page text(58 strings)
One .srt file for the subtitles of a video (29 strings)

We are setting up a staging site, I will put the final url in this bug as soon as we have it ready.

This is an opt-in project for all locales that want to be part of this event.

You will find in this bug an archive containing the two files mentioned above, please attach your translation as an archive as well to this bug. Since this is an opt-in project, we will not file separate bugs for locales

We have an svn repository setup that is open to localizers, instead of attaching a zip file to this bug, you can also commit to this svn repository in your locale folder, here is the repository url:

https://svn.mozilla.org/projects/fyfx/trunk/locale/

for French that would be:
https://svn.mozilla.org/projects/fyfx/trunk/locale/fr/

Thanks!
Note:
There are 4 isolated strings in the .po file:
FIVE
YEARS
OF
FIREFOX

They form a big title FIVE YEARS OF FIREFOX on top of the page (using @font-face and css positionning of each word for a nice effect)

Here is the staging site :
http://mozilla.zemoga.com/
Two questions:
* Is there a deadline for the localization and if so, when?
* Will you add the files to the translate to the locale's svn repository, or do we need to add them ourselves?
For the deadline, the end of the week since firefox 1.0 was released on November 9 2004, the 5 year anniversary is next week.

Please add the file yourself to the directory, thanks
Hi all,

May I recommend starting with the .srt file first if you wish to translate today. The PO file might be subject to change tonight (if I manage to get a patch landed that hopefully will make it slightly easier to localize).

It might go without saying, but you should rename "ab-CD.srt" to match your locale code. So in Pascal's example, that would become "fr.srt".

Thanks for understanding.

Since we've already translated both files (.po and .srt), could you please give a diff from the previous file when you're ready?

Should we upload on SVN also a compiled messages.mo?
(In reply to comment #5)
> Since we've already translated both files (.po and .srt), could you please give
> a diff from the previous file when you're ready?

Yes, of course. The changes are tracked in a couple of bugs, the most important one being bug 525924 and attachment 409731 [details] [diff] [review] in there. Feedback is welcome. The changes include adding l10n comments, plurals in one place or changes to html code. The are no changes to actual text on the page.

Another bug I'd like to get localizer's input on is bug 525954. Please take a look if you get a chance.

(I'm adding some dependencies now, but don't worry about them, it's nothing you should do. I'm just linking them to this bug.)

And, congrats on the quick turn-around, flod! :)

> Should we upload on SVN also a compiled messages.mo?

No, please don't.

Thanks Ehsan & Eduardo. I'll be landing the fixes to the .po file very soon. I'll try to merge your existing translations. Hopefully, there will be very little strings to fix manually.

@others: if you can, please hold off your landings. If you already started translating the message.po file, please contact me (stas on irc or via email) and I'll merge your existing work with the mew po file.

Sorry for the inconvenience this might have caused. I'll keep you posted.
Depends on: 526067
Me again.

All should be OK now. I crated and landed the patch from bug 525924, as well as
changed the file structure as per bug 526027 and bug 526067.

In each locale's directory there's now a LC_MESSAGES folder in which you will
find a properly created messages.po file. Please use a PO file editor to edit
this file, for example POEdit: <http://www.poedit.net/>.

Please don't "svn add" the messages.mo files that your editor might create. We
will create them on the server, no need to track them in svn (they're binary
after all).

The .srt files should continue to go into your locale's directory, i.e. next
to, not inside LC_MESSAGES.

I have also filed a bug with IT to set up a cronjob that will periodically
merge your PO files with the newest POT file and compile to MO, so that you can
preview the changes you're making on the staging server. For details, see bug
526093.

Last but not least, I merged the files that some of you had already committed:
es_CO, eo, fa and it. Thanks so much for these early commits. After merging,
there are 14 fuzzy strings and 8 new ones, so hopefully this won't be a problem
for you :)

Thanks to all for patience and understanding. My great hope is that the website
will be easier to localize right now. Please share your thoughts on this.

Happy localizing!
Depends on: 526093
Thanks. The eo messages.po file had the wrong encoding. That might also hit the other locales: it es_CO and fa.

I solved it by removing Stas' name from the header (because that was legal UTF-8) and then "unfolding" the utf8 in the rest of the file like this:

iconv -f utf8 -t iso8859-3 messages.po > messages.ok.po
mv messages.ok.po messages.po

(I think any iso8859 would do)
Hi, question about the @font-face <h1> title.

"Folk solid" font doesn't seem to contain fonts other than Latin alphabets, therefore translations would break the beautiful design. Is there anything to do to solve the problem? Maybe embedding other F/OSS fonts for the localized page, or even harvest character glyphs (of the title) from different fonts and make a special font for the site.
Depends on: 526183
The staging server is now compiling the PO files every 10 minutes. You can preview your translations at http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/${locale}, e.g.:

Eduardo at al. -- sorry for the encoding issues. I wonder why regular utf8 didn't work for you? Any ideas?
> Eduardo at al. -- sorry for the encoding issues. I wonder why regular utf8
> didn't work for you? Any ideas?

I tried to open it with Textmate on Mac, the encoding of the file was UTF-8 but all accented characters were garbled.
Stas, it was not regular utf8. I mean, if you can see the hex dump you will see that it was originally utf8 but then it was converted again to utf8 when you did the merge. So, every "high" character got mapped again. That's why the iconv trick solves the problem, because it "unmaps" the duplicated conversion.

I you want me to I can run iconv on it and attach those three locales to this bug.

By the way, I cannot see anything on the staging server ... (eo) Am I missing something?

I've just realized that the Italian version is available at http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/it-IT/ ("it-IT" instead of "it"). Is there a reason for this redirect?
Sorry for the bugspam, but I have two other questions:
* how can we check subtitles? I've tried to download the .mov file and test it locally, but it's 2.9GB (?!)
* "Go to Spreadfirefox.com" remains in English even if it's translated in messages.po Is it a problem with that msgid?
One question about the file with the subtitles: In string 8 we are using the ellipsis (…) but in string 9 we are using three single dots (...). Why is that different?

Another question about the staging website: Although we have checked in a translation (r55041) it is not visible on <http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/de/>. Is something wrong with our file, or what's the problem?

This is now broken and bug 526305 is tracking that. I landed a fix that works locally in r55073, but I'm not sure it worked on stage. Investigating right now...

(In reply to comment #23)

Will downloading the file from <http://videos.mozilla.org/fyfx/Firefox_Final_VO.ogv> and opening it with VLC work?

I will check this tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, absolutely, and I realized that a lot of subtitles are too quick (for example, n.13 appears for just 1 second and it's impossible to read).

How are we going to deal with this? Should we tweak the .srt file ourselves or something else?
Just a heads up. Staging sever should now work for your locales, so feel free to test :)
http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/de/ still isn't shown translated (in German).
Thomas: Thanks for reporting. This is covered by bug 526305. The fix is coming.

Apologies for this. We'll try to get it for you ASAP.

So the problem was stage not updating :) Detecting locales should be automatic right now (just go to <http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/>), if you're not redirected to <http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/${your_locale_code}>, please let me know, either here on in a new bug in Webtools > Five years of Firefox (preferably).

I'm trying to figure out why "de" is not working, details in bug 526305, as Gandalf said.

The HTML inside the string changed. I can mass-change this for all locales very easily, just don't want to cause any conflicts. Let's plan ahead: I'll mass-change this string tomorrow morning at 10.00 CET (9.00 UTC). To all localizers who have uncommitted changes: please commit your files even if the translation is not complete.

(In reply to comment #28)
> http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/de/ still isn't shown translated (in German).

Sorry for that, I'm working on a fix. For now, you can preview your translation on my home server, where I've set up the site: <http://stasm.homeip.net>.

Same goes for Esperanto. Eduardo, bug 526504 tracks the issue, but for now, you can use <http://stasm.homeip.net> to preview and test your translation.

(That's a temporary address which will work as long as my machine is up.)
And... "de" is up. There were conflicts on "svn up", resolved now. Should be OK. http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/de/

flod, the reference file with the subtitles has been modified: http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/fyfx/trunk/assets/subtitles/en.srt?r1=54647&r2=55097&pathrev=55097&limit_changes=100

Hi Stas, I think there's still a lot of sync issues, mainly due to the fact that you're using interval of seconds (BTW, why are you using only two numbers for milliseconds? Is that correct?)

I tweaked the Italian version to be in sync with that .ogv file, I'm going to attach a modified version of en.srt so you can try it (I did my tests with VLC) and compare these two subtitles.
Changed the format from HH:MM:SS,00 to HH:MM:SS,000, tweaked the timing
Is the stage perhaps defunct again? I'm not seeing my updates to the po file that I committed several hours ago.
Translation done for Greek with revisions 55215 and 55217.
The font problem reported in post #14 affects my locale too and it seriously breaks the design.
The srt file is not synchronized either.
(In reply to comment #36)
> Is the stage perhaps defunct again? I'm not seeing my updates to the po file

Mozilla's IT team just check the SVN updates for that site and "stuff looks good" to them. Are you still seeing the problem?
Hi Staś,

pt-BR is also not visible on stage server, though the translation was commited (r55211)
Two questions about the srt file:

1. Where should I save it?
2. What character enconding should I use? (I was using UTF-8, but looks like most players brake with it)
(In reply to comment #38)

> Mozilla's IT team just check the SVN updates for that site and "stuff looks
> good" to them. Are you still seeing the problem?

Yes, fi still does not show the changes. I also checked the version in SVN and
it is OK, but the changes are not visible on stage.

See e.g. the first paragraph under the main title. In SVN it says

"Viisi vuotta on pitkä aika Internetissä. Juhlikaamme siis yhteistyötä, jonka
avulla olemme tehneet verkosta paremman paikan meille kaikille."

but on stage I see

"Viisi vuotta on pitkä aika Internetissä, joten juhlikaamme yhteistyötä, jonka
avulla olemme tehneet verkosta paremman paikan meille kaikille."

Nice effect, but this is a mess to translate.
How do you control the font-size? Matching for "FIREFOX" perhaps?

We don't have a direct translation for "of" as a preposition, instead the word that does the same or similar function is appended to the affecting word, in this case "FIREFOX", resulting in "FIREFOXekin". How can we control that the "ekin" part will go lowercase?

Attention all localizers: I'll be mass-changing this string in about 20
minutes. Please commit your changes to messages.po files (even if the
translation is not complete yet) to avoid any conflicts. Thanks!

Those strings already changed (now it's one string instead of five).
http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/fyfx/trunk/locale/en-GB/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po?revision=54910&view=markup

Maybe it's a good idea to attach a new version of the files to translate and mark first Pascal's attachment as obsolete.

Thanks for pointing this out Francesco.

Any way to attach the new POT so I can update my work without conflicts? Thanks.
(In reply to comment #46)

> Any way to attach the new POT so I can update my work without conflicts?
> Thanks.

Yep, I'll do that momentarily. I'll just incorporate the change from bug 526867.
r55274 has the new PO files. 2 stings are marked as fuzzy:

- bug 526867: "Thank you for changing that Firefox" --> "Thank you for changing that, Firefox"
- "<span>Go to</span><span class=\"spreadfirefox-text\"> SpreadFirefox</span></a>" --> "<span>Go to</span><span class=\"spreadfirefox-text\"> SpreadFirefox</span>" (removed '</a>')

Please update your translations accordingly.

Flod, this is great. Thanks so much. I committed your version to the svn: r55278. I'll try to figure out how to update all other translations...

(In reply to comment #40)

Please save it to /trunk/locale/${your_locale_code}/${your_locale_code}.srt

Hmm, strange. UTF-8 should work just fine, AFAIK. I just checked in VLC and it looked OK. Also, the subtitles will be primarily displayed on the website, and I also checked that UTF-8 displays correctly there. Could you try again please, and if it doesn't work, let me know?

(In reply to comment #24)

This must have been unintentional. I changed the 3 dots to an ellipsis in r55278. Thanks for noticing that.

Jussi, Fernardo, the stage is updating again: <http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/>.

There was a problem with the script compiling the op files, which is now fixed. Sorry for the trouble.
Thank you Staś!

pt-BR translation is done on r55282

finally got the srt file working on UTF-8... apparently the crashes were caused by the BOM signature, which was removed.
sorry, pt-BR translation is done on r55282 (messages.po) and r55283

Thanks!
zh-TW updated. Translation is done if there are no further changes.

There are still bug 526949 yet to be decided.

I used a perl script for eo. It reads the new english file in parallel with the translation. Then it outputs the time lines from english and the rest of the lines from the translation.

open ORIG,"en.srt" or die $!; open TRANS,"eo.srt" or die $!;

while ($l1 = <ORIG>) {
	$l2 = <TRANS>;
	if ($l1 =~ /^00/) {print $l1;}
	else {print $l2;}
}

More questions about the German translation:
* Right now it is not possible to select German subtitles for the video.
* The special characters in the subtitle menu seem to be encoded incorrectly
* I may be mistaken, but it seems to me, as if the URL to digg.com for sharing
the video were incomplete. The "Fx5yr" seems to be missing.

And thanks to Staś for fixing the problem with the German staging website. :-)

You can now :) I'm adding the languages one by one, eventually all of them will be available in the drop-down. I'm taking the names from a similar drop-down menu on mozilla.com.

> * The special characters in the subtitle menu seem to be encoded incorrectly

That's bug 527060.

Don't mention it! :)
In some languages like DE or NL, the box with string "Want to stay in touch?" is missing the second column. Is this a problem with the .po file or a page layout issue?

Thanks Eduardo, that was a big help. I had to tweak it a bit for files with double or no empty lines between the subtitles, but it worked in the end. r55329 has the changes to subs timing.

I didn't change [it] and [pt-BR] as it seemed those were pretty well synced already. Let me know if you want me to change them nevertheless.
We had a last-minute change to the legal text next to the checkbox, see bug 527052 for details. I'm really sorry about this...

I merged all messages.po files in r55330.

Please update your copies. If you had local changes, you can try merging yourself. To do so:
1. save your changes
2. cd into the locale/ directory
3. rename your locally modified file:
   mv ab-CD/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po ab-CD/LC_MESSAGES/messages.bkp
4. svn up
5. msgmerge -o ab-CD/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po ab-CD/LC_MESSAGES/messages.bkp messages.pot
6. ab-CD/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po should be up-to-date now and should have your local edits (marked as "fuzzy" most probably)

Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

Thanks and again, sorry for the last-minute change.

ja, eu updated in r55399.

zh-CN updated in r55400. I had to fix the plural string ("%s VIEWS") because
there was no msgstr part.:
I'm not sure if that's correct, though.

ku has some encoding issues, I'm working on that.

Thanks to all!

Hi localizers!
Due to the fact the @font-face font used on the titles only contains Latin scripts, I've created bug 526949 that would create a subset font of Droid Sans to show characters other than Latin scripts, so they won't fall back to system default font.

You can see the effect, before and after, from attachment 410714 [details] and attachment 410971 [details] on that bug.

So far I've created subset font file containing zh-TW, zh-CN, and ja titles. If you think your script need to be included (and the glyph does exist in DroidSansFallback.ttf), please go to the bug and paste your translations to three of the titles (FIVE YEARS OF FIREFOX, COMMUNITY, LIGHT THE WORLD). Thank you.

I also want to point out that I couldn't help vi locale:
http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/vi/

From this page clearly Folk solid left out Vietnamese accented letters (ĂẮỘĐỒ).

nl: Checkin created revision 55431
another update for nl : Checkin created revision 55443
Added Hebrew. r55454.
Is it intended that the URL field is empty? I can see from the history that it should point to http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/.

Also, please note that English appear twice on the language selector below the video (the second appears as "English Subtitles" after clicking), and it reloads the video after changing languages (please make sure to configure the server to request the browser to cache that file!).
Polish version pl.srt in r55462
Updated version of Japanese translation.
one msgid was wrong. (so that translation was not detected by gettext)

Please commit this!!

Updated. Due to Bug 527114 Comment #13 I've removed "へ移動" from the link "SpreadFirefox へ移動".
I turned on the Hebrew and Korean localizations on stage in r55494.

Re-added, thanks.

Double English is intentional. If you have "English" selected, changing to "English Subtitles" will not reload the page. Changing from anything (including "English subtitles") to "English" will. I think that's OK. My guess is that users won't be going back from "English Subs" to "no subs at all" very often.

Also, Tim, thanks for committing ko and updated ja! :)
So we're done here and sk is ready, r55537 :)
Greek updated with rev.55540.
Thanks Tim, your work makes el look much better too.

A tiny issue i just noticed:
The srt file should start with a "The story of Firefox" string since that displays on the screen before the audio starts.
Finnish is now done with the subtitles in r55542 and the po in r55543.
One issue that I noticed in the Finnish web page: the optimal translation for "Go to SpreadFirefox" in Finnish would be "Käy SpreadFirefoxissa" i.e. it requires a case suffix in Finnish. There is actually no way of expressing that in Finnish without a suffix (even with a suboptimal translation), so what should we do? Can I add the ending as normal text after the image?
Jussi, the issue you point out has already been discussed in bug 527114.
Ah, thanks, I had missed that one. The issue is fixed in r55544 by removing the visit text.
Update with fix for bug 527114. Upload the new file, please.

By the way, I'm still unable to watch the video with Basque subtitles. I can see the subtitles in other languages though.
Is this a Basque-only issue? Can anyone confirm this please?

After fixing the encoding problems and bug 527292 (nasty php bug), Kurdish is
now available at http://fyfx.stage.mozilla.com/ku/

Also, I added pa-IN that was committed today. Thanks!

i've noticed the string "Remember what the Web was like in 2004? Thanks for changing that, Firefox!" ins't getting translated. maybe wrong msgid?

by the way, subtitles on brazilian portuguese are great!

> i've noticed the string "Remember what the Web was like in 2004? Thanks for
> changing that, Firefox!" ins't getting translated. maybe wrong msgid?

That's because the msgid got changed a couple of days ago and the string is now marked as "fuzzy". See <http://viewvc.svn.mozilla.org/vc/projects/fyfx/trunk/locale/pt-BR/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po?revision=55394&view=markup#l272>. That's gettext's way of asking you to review the msgstr after a change to msgid in order to see if it's still OK and to change it, if it's not. From what I see, you reflected the change in the msgstr, so you should be fine just removing the "#, fuzzy" line.

> by the way, subtitles on brazilian portuguese are great!

At least in es-ES version, when you singup to the news, the answer text is in english: Thanks for signing up, We'll be in touch with more news from Mozilla soon.

It's translated on es-ES.po file
Thank you for your efforts, Staś, Seth, Pascal, and all who made the life of us translators easier! You fixed bugs and problems quickly. It was a pleasure to work on this campaign.

BTW this video is sooo nice. Would it bet possible to have a downloadable version with integrated subtitles?

Our pleasure. But, honestly, it's really nice that the localizers are willing to work through all the bumps with us! So, likewise, many thanks to you Thomas and everyone.

> BTW this video is sooo nice. Would it bet possible to have a downloadable

This is going to be a tricky request because right now this is an Open Video implementation. As you probably know, we are using javascript to overlay the subtitles on a video that was produced in English. Although the video is Theora-encoded placed in an .ogg container, the raw production is still only English.

One possible solution would be to screen record the video while its playing with the subtitles of choice using a screen cast/capture service like Jing and then transcoding that output as an open video (perhaps using a service like Handbrake). I will ask the web-dev team if there is any other solution.

- hu: I added Hungarian to supported locales, it's now available on the site
- bn-BD: updated in r55792

The time has come to close this bug :)

I would like to thank all of you for all the work you did to localize this website. Thank you for doing the complete translation of the website's content and video subtitles in less than one week. Thank you for working during the weekend and committing or attaching fixes to translation until the last minute. Thank you for being very quick on updating the privacy policy text that was changed late in the game.

Thanks to your efforts, the website is now available in 30 languages, which is a mind-blowing achievement for me and a great example of what we can do as Mozilla community :)

I'd like to name a few people who helped on the localization of the project during last week. It's hard to name all, but here's a list anyways (in no particular order):
- Coce, Thomas, Guillermo, Julen and many others for providing a lot of testing which helped to improve the quality of the website for all locales,
- Flod for editing the subtitles timing,
- Eduardo for helping with the encoding of the PO files and for the script that helped mass-change the subtitles for all locales in a matter of minutes,
- Tim for fixing a lot of non-Latin locales that had font issues,
- Ehsan and Tomer for their help and guidance on how to fix the right-to-left version of the site,
- Pascal for starting the whole thing and then agreeing when I asked him on Sunday night, approximately 3 hours before the launch, if he could do the French translation ('like, right now'),
- Jamil for sending missing translations from a camp he was at with no Internet access, and many others among you who also had to change plans to complete the translation,
- Seth for answering questions when I couldn't and letting me work on this,
- Andres and Sebastian for code fixes,
- Stephen and Raymond for their QA efforts,
- Shyam (fox2mike) for setting up the staging server for localizations,
- Morgamic and Jeremy for postponing the launch so that we have more time to finish with l10n,
- Derek and Trevor for quickly updating the website in the production server on Monday and Tuesday.

I'm closing this bug as fixed. If you have any updates that should land on the production server, please file new bugs in Webtools > Five years of Firefox. I'll be happy to work on them.

Happy next 5 years, Firefox!
