We could use RSS feeds to offer users the option to subscribe to notifications when a website changes. With DOM push, websites can do this themselves, but this could be a good solution to increase engagement before sites take the initiative to implement their own notifications. Barbara, what do you think? I'll looking to making a meta bug to track all these different notifications related ideas we have floating around (e.g. notification to update).

This sounds like it involves a step of UX in which the user tells us (Firefox) that "hey, this Web page is important to me". Otherwise, this could be perceived by the user as a bit... awkward/ pop-up ad-like. So, I think this seems like it should have some overlap with the Bookmarks work we're doing. We'll also probably need a new section in Settings to manage these notifications so as our users have a quick and easy way to control them. Will noodle on this UX a bit.

(In reply to Anthony Lam (:antlam) from comment #1) > This sounds like it involves a step of UX in which the user tells us > (Firefox) that "hey, this Web page is important to me". Otherwise, this > could be perceived by the user as a bit... awkward/ pop-up ad-like. I don't think we want to wait for the user to tell us the page is important. I think we want Firefox to tell the user that we can notify them when the site adds new content, and give the user a chance to opt-out or opt-in to the feature in general. Then, if the user has opt-in, we can prompt (like saving passwords) to notify when content is updated. We need to limit this prompt to a whitelist of site types, and/or a blocklist of updated-too-frequently sites (like news sites). > > So, I think this seems like it should have some overlap with the Bookmarks > work we're doing. I'd like to avoid any overlap for now. > > We'll also probably need a new section in Settings to manage these > notifications so as our users have a quick and easy way to control them. Yes.

Rough ASCII art for this prototypes notifications. Just like we talked about IRL, keeping it simple for now. the Notifications action will lead to our "Notifications" section in Settings (bug 1247788). This will obviously be affected by which sites we support. +-----------------------------------------+ | | | +-+ Antlam on Medium | | +-+ | | UX thoughts for 2016 | | | +-----------------------------------------+ | | | +-+ Notifications Setting | | | +-----------------------------------------+ | Updated on January 11, 2016 | +-----------------------------------------+ +-----------------------------------------+ | | | +-+ 4 websites updated | | +-+ | | ABC-URL.com | | ABCDEFGXYZ-URL.com | | URL.com | | ANOTHER-URL.com | | | +-----------------------------------------+ | | | +-+ Notifications Setting | | | +-----------------------------------------+ | Firefox 4 | +-----------------------------------------+

The actual notification has been implemented as part of the patches in bug 1241810: https://hg.mozilla.org/integration/fx-team/rev/d0fd7d32ee5e https://hg.mozilla.org/integration/fx-team/rev/7c17a283a38a

The first experiments are enabled now. I'll close this bug. Everything else will happen in the follow-up bugs.
