Win98SE Mozilla 1.4.1 and 1.5RC2 I'm reporting this as 1.4.1 but I'm seeing this in all Mozilla versions and Netscape 7.1 When new mail arrives, the envelope notification icon appears in the systray. Mail that is filtered and read in the folder where it is filtered does not clear the icon. It remains until you go back to the original folder prior to filtering and click on the inbox or other mailbox in that folder.
Also see this on 1.5RC2, W2K. But I only see this when the filter destination folder is a local folder; filtered messages that are sent to subfolders on the original account do not trigger this behavior.
This is almost the same thing as bug 116181 -- the symptom complained about here is the systray icon, the symptom complained about there is the green arrow on the account. Both are cleared by the same action: navigating to a folder in the account where the mail arrived. This should probably be duped to that one, and the summary for that one expanded to include the tray icon.
Depends on: 116181
This isn't 1.4 branch only, please set version to trunk.

I had this problem with Thunderbird 0.7 and currently have it with Thunderbird 1.0 (20041206). OS is Win2k Pro, SP4. I have one IMAP account. All mail received on that account is filtered and delivered to various local folders. When a message arrives: 1. I receive a taskbar notification and sound. 2. Both the IMAP folder and the local folder show the "new mail" icon. 3. I click on the local folder and its icon changes back to normal. The Taskbar icon is still there. 4. When I click on the message it is marked as read. 5. The IMAP folder still shows the new mail icon and the taskbar new mail icon is still there. 6. Only when I click on the IMAP inbox folder does the taskbar icon go away. If I click on the IMAP inbox first and clear its "new message" state, I still need to click on the local folder and view the message for the taskbar icon to clear.
I can also confirm the bug with Thunderbird 1.0 (20041206), Win XP pro. Setup: - One IMAP account, nothing else. - Inbox and subfolders under "Local Folders". - Bunch of filters on IMAP account that "Move to folder: X on Local Folders". Symptoms are the same as Comment #16, with a couple of difference. I include all the steps to make an easier comparison. When a message arrives: 1. I receive a taskbar notification and sound, as well as a popup that says "<IMAP account> has 0 new messages" (which is kinda true, as the new message is now in a local folder). Hint text on the tray icon also reads "<IMAP account> has 0 new messages". 2. Only the local folder shows in bold text with the number of unread messages. 3. Clicking on the local folder has no visible effect. The tray icon is still there. 4. When I click on the message it is marked as read. 5. Local folder and IMAP folder show no visible sign of new or unread messages, yet the tray icon is still there. 6. Only when I click on the IMAP inbox folder does the tray icon go away. Further, clicking on the IMAP inbox removes the tray icon /even/ if there are new and unread messages in the local folders. In other words, if I click on the IMAP inbox right after an email is filtered to a local folder, the tray icon disappears even though that new email is still unread in a local folder.
Adding to comment #17: Clicking on the new mail notification popup (above the system tray) properly gives focus to thunderbird but selects the IMAP trash folder ("last known location" of the message, I guess). The message is in a local folder now and doesn't show in the IMAP trash. I would assume correct behavior would be to select the local folder containing the new message.
(In reply to comment #17) > 1. I receive a taskbar notification and sound, as well as a popup that > says "<IMAP account> has 0 new messages" Bug 228168. > Further, clicking on the IMAP inbox removes the tray icon /even/ if there are > new and unread messages in the local folders. This is expected. The tray icon is a notifier that new mails have arrived since the last time you paid attention, not an indicator that you have unread mail. (In reply to comment #18) > Clicking on the new mail notification popup (above the system tray) properly > gives focus to thunderbird but selects the IMAP trash folder ("last known > location" of the message, I guess). Last viewed folder? > I would assume correct behavior would be to > select the local folder containing the new message. Maybe. See bug 138106 & bug 138109, which both appear to be based on that assumption. I think there's a bug about not switching to *any* folder on clicking the alert or icon, but I can't locate it.
There seems to be a whole bunch of bugs that essentially all want the same thing. Would it make sense (for someone who can) to dupe all these bugs into one (e.g., bug 224823) and make it "Product: Core"? Suggested new Summary: Unread mail indicator (red star / green arrow) on (Account) folder icon and the New Mail Icon in the Windows Taskbar are not updated/removed when all mails are read or moved/deleted via (junk)filters.

is somebody knows if there is a same bug already open for Thunderbird of in the core code??? It is a really annoying bug I've TB and 6 pop account Each pop has its own inbox, but i've a lot of filter on each account to move the message in one of subfolder below Local Folders ... But when i receive a mail for account x which is filtered, and i've read the filtered mail, i've to click on the originating inbox account to remove the red star (similar to the green arrow of seamonkey) on the inbox and the account (and to remove the notification icon in the tray box)
Related thunderbird bugs: New Mail Notification Icon remains in Task Bar until manual "get new mail", https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=272328 Running filters on folder doesn't update the unread mail indicator in folders pane. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224823 Marking message read by filter causes Inbox to stay bold https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=277205 New mail icon remains when filters have marked all new mail as read https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275561 This bug annoys me about 100X more than any other issue I have with Thunderbird. Like previous poster, I also filter my mail, automatically moving all mail to local folders. In some cases, the mail is automtically marked read. Thunderbird handles that part ok (it doesn't show notification taskbar icon if new mail is marked read by a message filter). However, for new unread mail that is put into a local folder, the taskbar icon lights up (ok), but after reading the mail, the icon doesn't go away. I have to click on my IMAP Account Inbox folder to get the icon to go away.
This bug still occurs in Thunderbird 1.5. The following appear to be duplicates or at least related: bug 292120 - "delete new unread mail message system tray notification remains" bug 313694 - "Only changing mail 'folders' removes the new mail icon from the system tray" In my own variant of this problem, I use junk mail controls to move junk mail into a separate IMAP account. This allows me to keep my junk mail filters trained at two sites where I read the same mail accounts. Unfortunately, junk mail does not get marked as read when I do this, so the separate account (which only contains junk) often tells me it has new mail - which is unhelpful. Even when I add a message filter to "mark as read" all new mail in this junk account, I still get new mail notifications for the junk account - and, sometimes, I believe, for the account from which the message has just been moved. Finally, mail moved by my junk mail controls into this folder often (always?) loses its junk status. No doubt this is the subject of several other bug reports. Alan

See bug 253234. The capability to mark auto-detected junk as Read is actually available, but the preference is hidden. > Finally, mail moved by my junk mail controls into this folder often (always?) > loses its junk status. No doubt this is the subject of several other bug > reports. This was a known problem with IMAP but the fix(es) for the problem were all checked in before 1.5 was issued. Someone in the newsgroups recently had a similar problem which turned out to be the result of using the Mnenhy extension somehow suppressing display of the junk icon.
Mike, I would not say that my problem is the opposite of the one listed in bug 313694. I find that the systray new mail notification is pretty useless, as: * it flags new messages in junk folders * it often flags "0 new messages" or seems to flag a message just before it's removed to the junk folder (or perhaps by a filter) * the pesky unwanted new mail notification then hangs around until you fiddle with your folders! As for your other comment, the only extension I have running is Mozilla talkback. I still find that Junk status is lost when the mail is moved to the IMAP junk account. This is with XP Pro SP2 and Thunderbird 1.5. My mail provider runs Courier IMAP. I will also report this to bug 290099 as this was the closest match I could find. Alan
[Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.8.1b2) Gecko/20060826 SeaMonkey/1.1a] (nightly) (W98SE) I'm seeing bug 275561 comment 8 [ When filters have moved all mail out of a folder, the new mail icon remains. ] I have recently set up a few POP3 accounts with the "Global (Local Folders) Inbox" setting, and added filters which moves "all" messages to folders of another (POP3) account; and the tray icon remains, after reading these messages, until I click on the "Global" Inbox folder. Somehow, that folder should be "marked" as having no new messages (anymore) after filtering.

(In reply to comment #26) > Somehow, that folder should be "marked" as having no new messages (anymore) > after filtering. I tried to click in that folder _before_ reading the messages: the tray icon went away :-( Then the "marking" is reversed: the destination folders (correctly) have the green arrow, but the tray icon is "linked" to the initial folder instead of to them.

is this still broken in 2.0 nightlies and trunk builds?
[Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.9a3pre) Gecko/20070216 SeaMonkey/1.5a] (nightly) (W2Ksp4) Still seeing what I described in comment 26: Confirming with Trunk /W2K, what I experienced with 1.8 branch /W98 at that time. (same profile) Note that to get rid of the icon, I can click on any folder of my "Local Folders" account, not only the Inbox.

re: comment 35: Seconded from my last query on this. I also think bug 228168 looks like a dupe, and it has been mentioned above in comment 19 and comment 22. (Said bug also references it its c#11) Also, I think bug 430734 is a probably new dupe of this.
This is not the same as 253341, and neither is 228186. 430734 might be, but there's not enough detail there (yet) to say. This bug's new component, 'Filters', is incorrect; the filters work fine, the problem is the notification aspect after reading. Bug 116181 (which, if it's ever fixed, will almost certainly fix this bug as well) was given the 'Database' component during the categorization re-org, which is probably closer but I'm not sure if it's correct.
I'm not really working on notification bugs any more, and others are, so let me remove my name from this to clarify that.

Thunderbird 3.0, Windows 7. When new mail arrives, the envelope notification icon appears in the systray. Mail is filtered in way that filter move new mail in some folder that is subfolder of "Local Folders". Icon in systray remain after I read that mail. It remains until you go back to the original folder prior to filtering.

I read in "combined folders" mode, but even with onle one mail account, the new mail notifications remains even after I have read everything.
FYI this is still happening.

This issue is still present in November 2020:

Revision:
Thunderbird 78.4.3 (32 bit), Windows 10 (fully updated). It's been present in all releases over the last year at least.

Configuration:
One IMAP account.
One filter set up on the IMAP account:
Apply filter when: "Getting New Mail: Filter before Junk Classification"
Match all messages
Perform these actions: "Move Message to Inbox on Local Folders"

Narrative:
When mail arrives at the IMAP account inbox it is moved (by the filter) to the local account inbox and appears as an unread message. The "New Message" icon appears in the Windows system tray. After the new message is read there are 0 unread messages across all accounts and folders. However, the "New Message" icon remains in the system tray until "Get Messages" is manually clicked.

Repeatability:
Every message.
