User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9b4pre) Gecko/2008022604 Minefield/3.0b4pre Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9b4pre) Gecko/2008022604 Minefield/3.0b4pre Now that bug 398381 is fixed, another one has showed up, and it's worse than the one that got fixed: Firefox crashes very frequently (if not immediately, then after a few operations done with Yahoo Mail UI). This has been happening with several builds of FF. I haven't been able to notice a reliable trigger for the crash, but I have had it crash, at least, when I pressed 'v' see a message. Some crashes have been reported to Mozilla by the crash reporter, but others have not. For some crashes the Crash Reporter hasn't activated, and there are not even reports in pending state for them. The crashes occur for my old profile with a bunch of extensions (most of which have been disabled by FF) AND for a new one. As of now, I declare Firefox 3 unusable for Yahoo Mail's new UI. Reproducible: Always

I can't repro on Linux unfortunately. Can you paste the ids for the crashes where Crash Reporter was able to send in data?
Here they are, Bob: a8a22f30-e424-11dc-99f9-001a4bd43e5c, 30a8850f-e24e-11dc-8d52-001a4bd43e5c, 27de547d-e24d-11dc-8260-001a4bd43ef6. There are more, but I am not sure if they are for Yahoo related crashes. For these three, I am relatively confident they are. Could somebody educate me why Firefox can't prevent all crashes? Isn't it possible to have a try/catch block in the main function that would catch all exceptions or something to this effect?

Roman, not all crashes are due to exceptions that can be caught unfortunately. ccing js folks. Trying out a recent local-build with Yahoo! Mail, I'm not able to observe a crash. I do get some errors that seem to prevent the new interface from working quite right, but no crash.
Comment 5•16 years ago
|
||
The first error is: ==== Yahoo! Mail experienced a login error: name:NS_ERROR_DOM_WRONG_DOCUMENT_ERR message:Node cannot be used in a document other than the one in which it was created lineNumber:463 ==== The second error, occurring shortly after: Yahoo! Mail experienced a login error: Login error: name:TypeError message:j is null lineNumber:648 fileName:http://mail.yimg.com/us.js.yimg.com/combo?/pim/r/dclient/g/js/core/40ed4e2d8d7c4fedfd40ff2da621022e_1.js&/pim/r/dclient/g/js/launch/8f7e5aa4beb78311833eddc3334a14e5_1.js ====
I just tried beta 3 and saw that the behavior reported in bug 398381 is still there for me. So, it seems that later versions of Firefox 3 beta (after beta 3) have managed to hide this particular bug and led to crashes. Until FF crashes, Yahoo Mail works fine. I hope this bug will be useful to FF developers anyway.

(In reply to comment #5) > name:NS_ERROR_DOM_WRONG_DOCUMENT_ERR You're not using a recent enough build (you need one that has the patch from bug 418755).

yeah, woops. Mac OS X picked up a different version of minefield from a URL click. Works brilliantly, no crash.

Brian, until it stops crashing for me, please don't "solve" this issue as WORKSFORME.

Roman: Until you've tried with a recent nightly (find one here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/), please don't reopen.

Brian, as you can see from the User-Agent string in my report, I am using exactly the build you'd like me to use. Perhaps, the difference in what we observe comes from the difference in OSs and/or platforms we're using. So, I am reopening the issue.

Well, I'm not going to arm-wrestle you over the bug status, Roman, but I cannot reproduce this bug on a fresh build on my Windows machine, even with gczeal set to 2.
Comment 13•16 years ago
|
||
Roman, I think Brian should close as WORKSFORME or INVALID since you were using an untested build of FF (by yahoo) with an old version of YMail. Please retry next week and if the issue persist reopen it or create a new bug. Thank you

You, folks, do whatever you want with this report. It's just my opinion that Firefox shouldn't crash, no matter whether Yahoo's code is old or super new or whether Yahoo has tested this build of FF. If it crashes now, and nothing related to the cause is changed, the problem will likely to emerge later, with Yahoo or another site. An application should be robust enough to handle unexpected use cases without crashing. Brian, thanks for not arm-wrestling me :) Also, the fact that you can't reproduce the bug on your machine just shows how valuable it is to have testers using different systems. Ignoring bugs (and closing them as WFM is ignoring them, in my opinion) discourages users from continuing to file reports. It takes time and efforts, you know.
Comment 15•16 years ago

Roman, I dont think that Mozilla or Yahoo have ignored your or someone else's bugs since people on both teams were looking at the issue right away. But whenever you use a beta version of a browser or any other product you are subject to bugs that might had been fixed but the users can't see those fixes at that moment. And bugs that you submit can be closed as invalid, duplicated or worksforme depending on the situation So bottom line, thank you for submitting the bug, i hope you keep doing it but this issue has been fixed and you just have to wait for the version to roll out. I am really confident that by the time Fx3 is released, there will be no issues with Ymail. Manuel

Less talk, more attempts to reproduce or find how Roman's environment differs, if that matters. It's true that fixes are flying in at a high rate, along with more regressions, so it would be great if bug reporters could keep trying nightlies. I am confirming since this is a bona-fide report of a crash, undiagnosed so far. Any new talkback ids? Please add a comment linkifying them. /be

roman, do you had yahoo messenger installed on your machine? crashes might be manifestation of bug 419127.
Comment 18•16 years ago
|
||
Issue: Roman is using FF3 beta 4 with a non-compatible version of Ymail. With a FF3 beta <= 3 he will not even be able to log in. But it looks like on beta 4 the DOM error are hidden and therefore people using beta 4 and old mail are having crashes. Solution: Wait until the fixes for FF3 are finally rolled out.

Manuel, in reply to your comment #15 and comment #18: I think the issue is bigger than Yahoo Mail. Firefox crashed on that site, yes, but the crashes make a problem within Firefox visible. It's a symptom of a problem. It's better to eliminate the problem instead of covering up the symptom. I actually hope Yahoo doesn't change anything until Mozilla devs find the cause. Otherwise, the cause will be masked by Yahoo's changes and will show up in the future. It's better to eliminate the cause while FF is in beta state. -fullmetaljacket-, no, I don't have yahoo messenger installed on my machine. Chris Lee (the program manager for Yahoo Mail) asked me in bug 398381 to uninstall Firebug and try again. Here's what I did: uninstalled Firebug, installed Feb 28 2008 nightly build in a new directory, created a new profile, which I used to launch Firefox. After doing a few normal operations (pressing 'v', selecting different messages, going from one folder to another, etc.) on new Yahoo Mail, Firefox crashed again. How cleaner can you expect one's environment to be? Note: crash reporter didn't get activated again. Is there another way to produce useful for devs information?

http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_with_WinDbg please run firefox under windbg. if you need help, visit irc.mozilla.org, various people can walk you through it, or if they can't, they can find me and i'll handle the rest.

Roman, in case it isn't clear from the comments, your report and updates are very welcome and we should not close this bug until we've done more work. If you can get onto #developers on irc.mozilla.org and ask for help after firing up windbg, that would rock. /be

Thank you, Brendan. I hope I'll be able to handle the debugger because I am a programmer myself. Meanwhile, I had another crash, and unfortunately, the crash reporter was blocked by my firewall (I installed Firefox into a new dir, and this instance of the reporter wasn't hadn't been permitted to access the net). Since the reporter can't be forced to send pending reports, I attached the log files here hoping that somebody will be able to use them. After this, I will run FF with the debugger and see if I can get it to crash. I know that using a debugger tool can prevent a crash (this, for instance, has happened to Opera -- crashed without the tool and didn't with it).

Here's output from the debugger. I'd understandably like to know if this has been helpful. BTW, I had to issue the Go command, I think, 3 times for Firefox's window to show up. This is FF installed into a new directory, and the profile is pretty new. ------------- Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 6.8.0004.0 X86 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. could you please uninstall tortoisesvn? dbaron: he said he was using a clean profile (see comment 19 and comment 25) the only other things worth poking from a foreign object perspective are flash (NPSWF32) and bonjour (mdnsNSP). I'd simply rename the .dll's to .dul and restart. and he doesn't have the yahoo state plugin (comment 19 + lm output confirms).

Comment 39•16 years ago

I need tortoisesvn for my development activities, so I can't uninstall it. I can update it, though. It's crashed a file manager I use in the past and also crashed Windows Explorer. But Firefox isn't supposed to interact with tortoisesvn. timeless is right -- I don't have any yahoo toolbar or extension. I have others in one profile, but FF has crashes with a newly created profile too. Yahoo Mail uses Flash stuff often, so maybe the problem is related to it, but the debugger output showed some cycle recycling code when FF crashed. Doesn't this mean anything? I can disable or even remove Flash plugin and see if anything changes.
Comment 40•16 years ago
|
||
tortoise interacts w/ shell32, which is used by common dialogs (e.g. open). and as you know, it isn't trustworthy :). if you're an administrator, you can create a second user and setup tortoisesvn so that it is only installed for the one user. (this may require registry hacking, but it should be fairly easy to do, if things are installed globally, find the keys, export them, delete them, change the exported file to say HKEY_CURRENT_USER, and import it for the one user.) don't worry about CC, we'll worry about that, just help us by reducing the number of variables on your system (even temporarily, just uninstalling tortoisesvn for one run to verify that it still crashes, although i'd much prefer it not be in memory at all...).
Comment 41•16 years ago

I can confirm that this bug exists on both the Windows and OS X versions of Firefox 3 beta 4. I've gotten at least 3 crashes of the browser on my Mac, and one on Windows, all while using Yahoo Mail (the new AJAX version). The crash reporter has reported all of them. Sometimes, I was clicking on a folder in Yahoo Mail. Sometimes, I had just tried to close a tab containing Yahoo Mail.
Comment 42•16 years ago
|
||
I should note, before anyone asks (since I know you will), the only plug-in that I am running is Adblock Plus.
Oh, I forgot to comment, but I spent a day last week running the browser on Yahoo mail under the relatively robust memory scrubbing tools on mac (both the standard malloc behavior mods and libGMalloc) and I couldn't reproduce a crash.

These crashes are showing up at http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/ on Windows, Mac, and Linux. (Comments on both Mac and Windows implicate Yahoo! mail; I didn't see any recent b4 Linux crashes with such comments, though, but the sample size is pretty small and most people don't comment.) I find it interesting that, while most of the crashes are invalid memory access, some percentage of them are floating point exception / divide by zero.

http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/65f9e73a-ef92-11dc-9cc1-001a4bd46e84 No extensions, several tabs open, a few bookmarks and rss feeds added to the toolbar. To reproduce, almost reliably, I have been going to my yahoo mail account, clicked on a couple of messages, clicked on the Spam button, then quickly clicked on the Spam folder, and then some other folder. It seems to depend on timing. See crash report comments.

David said: "Comments on both Mac and Windows implicate Yahoo! mail". But you still agree that FF shouldn't crash regardless of what happens on a web page, right? For what it's worth, I think the steps to reproduce are: * load a yahoo mail inbox that has a lot of messages in it (more than 50 or so) * check the box next to the first message * hit delete * do some other stuff until garbage collection happens
Depends on: 422286

David, I don't believe the 2nd and 3rd steps are necessary as I almost never use them and have crashes often. I do have many thousands of messages in my inbox, though.

I got a weird message when FF crashed on me this time -- a security feature Windows Vista calls Data Execution Prevention. I haven't seen it listed here as a part of the crash issue, but I guess Yahoo Mail or FF incorrectly hogs memory somehow. Windows then closes FF and (supposedly, but apparently not always) notifies the user. If you get this error and you're running Windows Vista, there is a way to change your memory settings to possibly prevent this from continuing to happen. I won't list the entire set of instructions on how to change this -- just search "Change Data Execution Protection settings" and you should have no problems finding the help page. I won't guarantee it will keep FF from crashing (or Windows from closing it, I guess), but it might help out a bit.

(In reply to comment #84) > I got a weird message when FF crashed on me this time -- a security feature > Windows Vista calls Data Execution Prevention. [...]I guess Yahoo Mail or FF > incorrectly hogs memory somehow. Windows then closes FF No, it's not hogging memory, the process is treating allocated memory ("data") as if it were program code ("executing" it). This is the kind of flaw hackers use: stuff downloaded from the internet is "data" and if they can trick Firefox (or another program) into executing it they win. Please do not turn off DEP, it's an important security feature Microsoft has added to Windows. Triggering DEP does not mean you've been hacked, but it does indicate that the program has a bug that is most likely exploitable. But this bug was reported fixed by bug 422286 which might have caused an access violation crash but should not have triggered DEP so you might be reporting a completely different crash.

No, when it read the arbitrary memory, it copied it into an array buffer where that memory would be treated as jsvals, some of which are things that have function pointers inside them.

This is the dump file created when Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 4 crashed while using Yahoo Mail.

matt.welshans@gmail.com: we aren't asking for any further information, this bug is fixed in trunk and you can either download a nightly today or wait for the next beta release.

I never had Yahoo mail crash with Beta 3, but with Beta 4 it crashes all of the time. Generally when trying to delete SPAM e-mail.

jonathan, something was changed after beta 3 that causes the crashes. This was fixed after beta 4. Download the latest nightly build, and your problem will be solved. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

I was using beta4, but the automatic updater updated me back to beta 3! Is that another bug?
(In reply to comment #98) > I was using beta4, but the automatic updater updated me back to beta 3! Is that > another bug? Hard to imagine that it could be the same bug as a crash on Yahoo, I think. You should file it, if you're certain that's what happened.

I have beta 4 and still it crashes, when I open yahoo mails..This happens most of the time, when I double click on the mail to open it up in a new window...
Yes, of course it does -- this is a bug in beta4. It is fixed now on the development trunk, and the fix will be available in beta 5.

It happens again in Beta 5. Especially if I try to open a mail from Tiger Direct which has some images...

There are really a lot of new crash reports with 3b5 and 3pre: http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?range_unit=weeks&query_search=signature&query_type=contains&signature=js_GetGCThingTraceKind&query=js_GetGCThingTraceKind&range_value=1 Timeless, should we open a new bug for that issue? The comments not only report crashes while using Yahoo Mail.

This bug was fixed by a patch that landed. Any new symptom goes in a new bug. That is all :-/. /be

Guys, I am using FF 3 Beta 5 on MS Vista. The problem i am facing looks like similer to the problem which had been discussed in this chain. While using Yahoo mail (new version), FF crashes frequently while using down arrow or up arrow key to change over to new message. Please let me know what other data you need from my side for more details on this issue. Pasting below is the event viewer data - Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 19/4/2008 10:04:29 PM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: QWERTY Description: Faulting application firefox.exe, version 1.9.0.3007, time stamp 0x47eb31c2, faulting module MOZCRT19.dll, version 8.0.0.0, time stamp 0x47eb3235, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00007c88, process id 0x14e4, application start time 0x01c8a1ee0c62013f. ibugs: file a new bug, and please try to send a "breakpad" crash report from the crash-reporting agent that watches Firefox -- the Microsoft crash reporter is of no help here. /be
Comment 122•16 years ago

ibugs: you shouldn't file a new bug. It looks like that you hit bug 427718 which is the follow-up crasher after Firefox 3 beta 4.
