User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040609 Firefox/0.8.0+
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040609 Firefox/0.8.0+
Please see attached picture to see what I'm talking about. It says I have 27
emails when I do not have any new emails. I had 27 earlier in the day but I have
marked them all as read and moved them into another folder and still 27 shows,
even after a reboot.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click or hover over the Mail icon in the toolbar
Actual Results:
Shows Read Mail (27 New)
Expected Results:
Whatever it should show when no emails...I'm guessing it should says "No New
Mail" or "Read Mail (0 New)"
Newest nightlies of Firefox and Newest Thunderbird, also happend with the .6
release of Thunderbird. I did a clean install of Thunderbird when I installed
the Nightly and Firefox still shows 27 new.
This bug is still present in the 0.9 release with a fresh install
This bug is still present in the 0.9, 0.9+, 9.1, and 0.9.2 releases with a fresh
install.
sorry to "bump" this but am I the only person that expirences this bug?

Mine's always set to "1 mail", regardless of how many mails I have. My mail
client is Outlook Express, if that matters.
I have the same problem... 45 new emails.
(3rd August build inside)
+ Thunderbird nightly installed.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040707 Firefox/0.9.2
Thunderbird version 0.7.2 (20040707)
I finally realized that it is getting the number of emails from my hotmail
account. I pretty sure the same way XP does when you click your username to sign
in it shows how many emails you have. Thunderbird is set as default mail client
and i do not have outlook or outlook express installed but i do have MSN
Messenger installed.
Also could this have something to do with using the zips and not the installs?
Forgot to add that still does same thing with MSN Messenger off and and opening
Firefox back up. So its somehow gets the info from the passport that is tied in
with the system. another thing is when I click in the menu on Read Mail (130
New) it opens Thunderbird (like it should) but it was displaying the wrong
ammount of emails.
i got the same bug. it doesnt seem to matter waht OS,mail or FF ver your running
either.
(im running XP, Outlook2k3 and FF.9.3 if it Does matter).

the exact same ammount as the firefox mail icon and MSN messenger. 132 messages
now started out with like 14 since the 8.0 release

So is this staying for 1.0PR or will we take this out?
It really serves no purpose since its function seems to go to whatever mail
service that is being called by Windows.

Removing the number, until a "better" implementation can be found, would fix
this bug - the functionality needn't be removed.

True. Hide it like has been done with so many other features which aren't
working yet.
Summary: Mail dropdown box and hover over box does not reflect # of emails. → Mail notification does not read from the default email client with zipped builds

I also wanted to add that I used the installer, and started with a clean install,
deleted profile and old directory, reg files cleaned, and it still says 35. I
also don't have a .net passport account, nor do any of my email clients have 35
new messages. (Outlook or thunderbird) Also none of my web emails have that many
new messages. I can't seem to figure out where it's getting this number from.

""Not to downplay this bug, but AFAIK that's a Windows XP problem rather than
Firefox.
The number may be stored in the registry here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
If Firefox is using that as it's basis for # of unread mail, then that would be
where the problem lies since it's nearly always completely wrong.

You may have something here. I do find though that it does read correctly for me
now that I look here. I happen to have AOL and when I looked at the UnreadMail
Registory folder which holds the messagecount at 0 for unread mail. I rarely get
any messages in my AOL account so it is nearly always at 0 but when I get 1 mail
in that account it shows as 1 and when I read it it goes back to 0. I never
noticed it before but now I do say that you may be correct in where Firefox is
getting its info on Windows systems.

upon futher investigation with the link provided by Comment#32, I check my
registry and had a hotmail account listed and a yahoo account.
The application data for the yahoo account is '"C:\Junk\Mozilla
Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -profile "C:\Documents and
Settings\Admin\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default.vmq" -mail'
the hotmail account 'http://www.hotmail.com'
So maybe this bug is both a firefox and a thunderbird bug? Firefox bug for
displaying the information and not using the information set by the default mail
app and/or maybe a thunderbird bug for not wholey making itself the default mail
app...
In the registry the message count for both the hotmail and yahoo account are
both correct but firefox only reads the count from the hotmail account.
I can't figure out exactly what the cause is so i'm just trying to provide more
infomation for someone that better understands how firefox gets this info and
how thunderbird sets itself to be default mail app.
Maybe a fix is have a Firefox option to select which account to gather this info
from? but can that be done before 1.0 or not because of the l10n freezes?

Personaly, I don't see the point having a line in the menu which say us the
number of unread mails. First, it doesn't seems to be updated in real time (only
updated when we restart firefox ?). Second, we aren't informed if we don't open
the menu (or click on the icon). And third, it needs an external application
running to update the registry key used by firefox.
And finally, no integrated checking engine is planned to be developed (see bug
238594), but perhaps an extension will be created ?

I think this is a good bit XP's fault, but it'd be nice to have a Mozilla
workaround...something that's not dependant on Windows. Hey, it'd be really
nice if Mozilla actually corrected Windows, so that the Welcome screen displays
the actual number of unread mail items.

I doubt the any of the devs would want to hack windows files to fix the XP
problem with the Login screen. But they can fix the problem from within Firefox
by letting us tell firefox which one is the default email account.

Or just choose not to display the wrong value in Firefox. It isn't Firefox's
fault, but it becomes Firefox's problem.

In the mean time, you can install the extension "Menu Editor", which is also
usefull to reduce the context menu.

Could we please fix that for 1.1 or alternatively remove this UI completely.
This bug is pretty visible when using Thunderbird and gets a lot of duplicate

We use the system standard key for locating new mail. If the value in that key
is wrong, it is a bug with whoever is writing the key. (In this case, Thunderbird).

I understand why your saying this is a TB bug, but also this is a firefox bug.
Firefox should allow us to tell it to use the default browser not some broken
arse code that windows implemented. If firefox can read from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
then why can't we choose which account to use? Why firefox decides to use what
ever windows messenger has set as the email account is beyond me.
Yes TB could fix this but then what if I dont want to use the account that TB is
reporting as the default? If I left TB open all day why would I also want
Firefox telling me that TB has new mail when apparently if TB is open it would
let me know if I have that option set.
Another point, IE allows us to choose which mail client to use...why not
Firefox? Thought this was supposed to be a smooth transition?
Sorry If I sound like an arse but come on.

Bug still here, It shows "3 new".
Are they planning on fixing it?

The problem is that the only (Microsoft) applications that have been written to
take advantage of the feature of Windows XP (according to Microsoft at time of
writing their article) are Outlook Express and MSN Messenger.
Overview: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q304148
The API calls that applications should use to update this is:
set) SHSetUnreadMailCount from shell32.dll
get) SHGetUnreadMailCount from shell32.dll
There is a workaround on the linked page above for controlling rogue values and
stopping certain accounts from changing that value. Therefore one could assume
this to be a Windows Bug and not Firefox but possibly (if it is not implemented
already) a missing feature from Thunderbird.

The Firefox part of this bug is to just remove the interface. No display of the
message, no problem, right?

See bug 257391. It is already implemented in Thunderbird, it just wasn't
working. It should work a lot better with the patch on that bug.

Whether we keep the Mail UI or not is another bug, but this is the correct way of doing things, there was a Thunderbird bug that was misusing the key. MSN Messenger may screw this up for some users if you have it set to check hotmail.

Not sure what happened or when, but I just noticed today and in this version: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20060131 Firefox/1.5
that it no longer shows in Firefox.
Thanks, I guess.

Actually, it is back, but it shows "Unread" email count in my Thunderbird inbox, NOT the number of undelivered emails. So, I guess the count is correct though undesired. Glad to hear it is off the trunk at least.

Maybe the version should be changed from "unspecified" to "trunk" or "2.0 branch" or something more useful then, so people on the "officially supported" version aren't left wondering.
